"WHY a snake??"
Hey everyone! Over the last few months, I've had various encounters with people desperately asking me why I own a snake/reptile--as though I've committed some sort of a crime! I know most of us in the reptile community have probably been faced with such questions and mean comments about owning/keeping our scaly friends. I wanted to share this beautiful article I found online about reptile ownership and how we, as reptile owners, are "not weird" or "evil", but that we are as "normal" and "heavenly" (lol) as a typical dog owner can be. So sit back and relax, it is a long read, but if you have only but time to kill you'll appreciate this awesome article as much as I did. Let me know what you think! Enjoy :)

Hahaha! :gj:

Reptiles don't bark. They don't shed as often as dogs and cats. They also require less maintance, than your average pet.
-
I tell them I wanted something that could eat their pet...

Because dinosaurs went extinct!

Perhaps we are "weird" in a sense that we tend to love these solitary animals who hardly show any interest in us, let alone care if we even existed. An unrequited love, perhaps? :P

So incredibly true. This has got to be one of the easiest pets to keep. Possibly one of the easiest reptiles to keep.

I love the fact that they ask so little... unlike every other creature in my house (boys I love you! But your mother is tired :P ). All my snakes want is an appropriate enclosure, good temperatures, hydration, and a nice ratsicle (or mousicle in the case of the sand boas) every week or two.
They're just freaking awesome.

I wanted to make it even more difficult to get a girlfriend? haha!

Re: "WHY a snake??"
Thank you for sharing this. I enjoyed reading this.

I usually tell people that as a scientist I see them as a vestigial remnant of our primordial evolutionary past. Pure, unadulterated predators.
-
I'm waiting for it to talk.

I actually wrote a blog post on this back in 2012 when we got our first snake... 1, which quickly became 2, when then became 4.
Now we're up to six, and I keep staring at sunglow BCIs...

Or we're so secure and happy with who we are that we don't need unconditional love from a pet.

.
That at is a wonderful article.
That alone makes me happy I found my way back here! :):taz::)
-
In my case, it's because I find myself in awe of the color patterns and the almost hypnotic grace of a snake's movement. They have a beauty that is singular in the animal kingdom.
-
Nice article. Personally, I keep them because I enjoy them aesthetically.. Their patterns and colors, their body forms, etc. I also enjoy handling them... Quite a different experience than your typical cat / dog. The much lower maintenance aspect is great as well. I was just able to check tubs and water for my 10 snakes in about 5 minutes... Aside from tub cleaning and feeding night, that ain't bad for 10 pets lol. My cat takes up much more time every day. They do suit someone with a busy lifestyle much better than a conventional pet.

Wow, thanks for the kind words guys!
There I was minding my own business and suddenly a strange traffic spike emerges from BP.net...:)
I've been a lurker of these forums for a while but seeing this thread made me realize it's time to make an account and say hello. So...hi!

Re: "WHY a snake??"
I have to admit, I love reptiles because they're so misunderstood. I've met multiple people who ask me why I have a snake because they're "disgusting" and "evil" and "in the Bible, a snake told eve to eat the forbidden fruit"... I mostly give them a blank stare at the latter. I'm covered in tattoos and piercings, one of my tattoos is a pentacle (I'm wiccan). You really think I care what a thousand year old book says? But without getting into a religious debate I enjoy learning things about them I never knew. They're so misunderstood. They have feelings just like every other animal, they just can't make noise to tell you what their feelings are (except threatened. You'll know).

Re: "WHY a snake??"
One of the comments I get often is "snakes don't blink!" Well obviously they don't, would you blink if your eye was a scale?

The favourite response I had when my sister-in-law asked "why a snake?": I'm allergic to cats.

The serpent in the garden of Eden was the good guy. He gave Eve knowledge, it was God who wanted to keep us ignorant, obedient and subservient.
-
i work a lot, so low maintenance pets are ideal
plus the myriad of color and pattern variations is a definite plus
-
Re: "WHY a snake??"
The snake didn't even say to eat it. He said something along the lines of "you don't die if you eat it. You get the knowledge of god." then eve couldn't be responsible and blamed the snake!
