A Day at Petco (Funny stories ahead!)
So I think from now on whenever someone says anything ridiculous about snakes I'm just going to post it here. I'll start it off lol

"One time my daughter and I were sitting in our car at my other daughters house. The man next door had a HUGE yellow snake outside on his porch. I was so scared. It wouldn't have taken anything for it to get across the yard and get in our car after us. I was so happy when he picked it up and went back inside."
One of those "the only good snake is a dead snake" on fb posts. Paraphrasing since I don't have the actual image anymore, but it was so ludicrous that it really stuck in my mind.
-
When you're at a pet shop and there is a bowl of meal worms in with the ball pythons. I know pet supplies plus is bad, but come on...

Oh, come on! They HAVE to have care sheets or planograms!
We have a water dragon at work that wasn't doing so hot because he didn't eat and one day I took a chance (after doing research) and deliberately put meal worms in with him even though the planograms do not include them for him. I think it saved him. I have never seen such beautiful coloration and he's so active and eats much more salad now. Still hates crickets though! They still give him worms daily :)

Since when are meal worms bad for water dragons?

They're not but Petco doesn't include them in the planograms thus they usually don't receive them. They usually only get a salad and some crickets

i havent heard anything too bad about snakes, aside from the typical "they're all evil" debate lol. I've heard bad advice in the fish section of our petcos/petsmart around here so many times it's not funny, mainly dealing with pleco, balas and rainbow sharks. I did however overhear an employee telling a new beardie owner that they just needed a really hot heat bulb and did fine on crickets forever...

That is awful! We give ours a large salad, a bowl of meal worms, and crickets and they mainly like the worms and salad. We actually deny people purchase of certain fish unless they have a tank up and running or if they don't have proper housing for it, etc, etc. I had a lady tell me that she was just buying sharks to feed to her larger sharks in the tank to which we promptly told her we couldn't sell to her. Our store takes pride in ensuring the safety of both the customer and pet.

Re: A Day at Petco (Funny stories ahead!)
I have a friend of a friend who just moved to a new area and setup her 10ft boas tank on the ba k Florida room just like ours. Well, word got around that she had a snake so the neighborhood kids would peek through the screen to check him out. Then one day she came home and the locks on his cage were cut...someone forced entry onto her porch and stole him! There was an immediate investigation under way but mean while the cops told her to post REWARD posters that said she lost it because 'if you say they stole it they will release it'. Now she's getting a lot of hate and people are telling her that she's the reason the Everglades are overrun by non native snakes, etc, etc. It's mass hysteria. People are calling the cops top escort them to their vehicles because they say the monster snake will eat them and their children. Anyway, the police narrowed down suspects and got a warrant but the kids already had a heads up and RELEASED THE SNAKE. So now, she says if they get a call about a large snake they call her to see if it's him...and she's very distraught because they refuse to grab him for her even though he's been in captivity with her for 17 YEARS and has never bitten her...

Rats are pets too, do you deny selling them to snake owners? I cannot understand why it matters if they are pets or food, extremely hypocritical.
-
SCwood, I feel like if anyone gives your friend too much hate, then they should tell the hater the truth and explain the situation. That's just not right... I think saying it escaped and went missing is the worst possible thing you can do... (edit, I just read the last little bit of that, that's awful! )
To be honest, if I lived in Florida and had a large snake, I would have them microchipped in case if that happened. Have your friend look into that.

Because they are being marketed/sold directly as "pets" not feeders/throw away animals. Who knows what inhumane horrible things the average person might do with something they already plan to have die.
-
Ooh, I've got a doozy from the last time I went to petco. I usually buy my rats from a local place, but they were closed, so I swung by petco (or was it petsmart? One of the two). I opened the freezer and popped open a box of rats to see how big they were. An employee took this as a sign of me being confused, and after asking what kind of snake I had and how big it was she said, "With snakes like that you need to feed them a mouse that isn't any bigger than its head."
LUCKILY, her coworker corrected her... by saying, "No, I'm pretty sure the mouse can't be any bigger than the space between their eyes."
...I just thanked them, told them I know what I need to be feeding and went on my way.

Re: A Day at Petco (Funny stories ahead!)
I know this isn't about snakes specifically, but I cringe each time I hear people at Petland Discounts and Petco give awful advice on fish husbandry.

:confusd:
So... if I buy a live rodent as a pet from a pet store but I really intend to use it as a feeder, I'm more likely to abuse that critter than one that I purchase specifically as a feeder... does not compute. The only difference is that pet rodents cost 5-10 times as much as feeders, and not in how I treat them for the very short time between when I purchase them and when I feed them to my snakes.

From the stores POV you're still buying something from them in order to kill. Their business built around selling pets isn't going to be into that or the possibility of it being mistreated before the final end. (And that the death itself is inhuman treatment)
A lot of average people can't even take proper care of animals they keep as pets, it's perfectly reasonable to assume they won't care for an animal bought for food half as well. Not like it's a sure thing that a snake will take whatever is given to it and now they got some fuzzy rodent to take care of that's supposed to be dead.

Well there's a difference between animals being marked and sold as pets and those being marked and sold as feeders. Sellers have rights just as buyers and owners do, do not forget. Also in this particular example I don't understand why this person wanted to buy fish I'm sure aren't super cheap versus traditional feeder fish raised and sold for this purpose. Waste of money if you ask me.
My funny pet store story comes from the petco I tend to get my feeder mice from. The first time I came into this particular store I checked out their ball pythons, because that's kind of what I do. I peeked in one of the little half logs to see a nice, neatly coiled BP with a nice, neatly coiled baby cornsnake on top of it. I pointed it out to an associate as I was getting my mice and one of the workers got up on a little stool and dug around in the BP tank for about 5 minutes and pulled out maybe a dozen baby corns from around and under the balls and various decor. I guess the divider between the two setups isn't super snug because every time I go there are a few corns snuck in with the balls. Nothing super terrible, but still kind of amusing/concerning.
Edit:

I resent this. I buy live feeders and I take good care of them up until the point my snake swallows them down. I'm not about to feed my prized ball pythons mangy beaten animals that will freak out and attack my snake; I'm going to feed them fat happy mice that have no idea what's about to grab them. If my snakes don't eat I have all the equipment needed to take care of my feeders until they do.

We have paperwork to sell them as food. We are not supposed to sell any fish as feeders except those marked as such

That's weird because we charge the same rate whether it be a feeder or pet. Petco simply requests that we keep track of what goes out and for what purpose it was bought so we can keep track of how many we need and a whole bunch of other sales statistics I don't even take part in.

I worked at a family owned pet store chain as a teenager. I loved the job for the most part. I took care of the birds, reptiles and spiders mainly as well as the "small animals" as they are called - rodents.
I once had a Chilean Rose Haired Tarantula out of it's tank for cleaning. I did not realize I was being watched by a customer at the moment.
So I coax the large spider onto my bare hand and bring it out. I'm kind of inspecting her and glad she didn't bite me (I had one of the very same spiders as a pet and this variety is very docile and not known as aggressive) when I hear a woman scream. I turn around and she's screaming at the top of her lungs from 10 feet away demanding I put it back. I kind of gave her a sideways look like "why?" and she ran straight out the front door, still screaming.
To this day it cracks me up.

Oh no, not a spider... It's a pet store. I honesty don't get why people are so scared sometimes... it's like if I went to an outdoors store(cableas basspro, etc.) and started screaming and running away from an employee handling a firearm. It's to be expected at the store and 9.9999 times out of 10 you are in no danger at all.

Depending on where you live, anyway. In Texas the state doesn't mandate permits or chips for any reptiles, though some counties or cities might.

What I find funny is when I offer to help someone carry something and they just say, "Well can't a guy do it?" We only have 3 men vs like 5 women working at our small store...it's just how that happened lol. Anyway, the look I give them will either make them laugh at me or hand it over XD apparently being 5'1" and 120 makes me frail lol usually telling them I play with large snakes daily will convince them...idk why I mean the snake is what...5 lbs and your bag is 30!

I once had a guy from a local church come knocking while I had Kirby out. He did his whole speech while trying very hard not to look at him  halfway through my dog, who was in a cone at the time because of some fungus on his ears, slipped out and I had to chase him down with Kirby still in my hands and all the neighbor kids screaming and making all sorts of noise. I got the dog back inside and then the church man started over... I had a bit of a laugh after he had left.

The owner of a local pet store told me it was better to feed live rodents than f/t, because snakes on a f/t diet "tend to get depressed."

The state of Texas requires an annually renewed permit for any nonnative venomous snakes, in addition to Burmese pythons, African rock pythons, Indian pythons, green anacondas, and reticulated pythons. The recreational ownership permit cost $20 a year. There's also a commercial permit for anyone who intends to sell regulated species that costs $60 to purchase an renew annually. In addition to a permit, record keeping is required for any individuals of the regulated species being kept in the state.
That said, it isn't an unreasonable regulation by any stretch of the word, and is far better to have this piece of regulation as opposed to the draconian garbage that requires an insane insurance policy, specific caging, micro-chipping, random inspections, and to top it off, the permit itself be super expensive.
Also, I've noticed the fact that Texas even has a regulation in the first place greatly benefits USARK's lawsuit against the USFWS.

I know some petstores in my area have fancy rats as pets and if they think it's for food they won't sell it to you. I think they have a separate supply of feeders somewhere. Though I don't imagine it would take much effort to trick them. "Yeah I want a pet rat" "ok, cool.... $10.00... Expensive meal... I mean ok!"

Ah, can I ask you to point me to where you found this? It's gotten to where I've just been considering going to a lawyer every time I need to find out if keeping or selling certain animals is legal. The last website I found with laws by state only said it's legal to own pretty much any reptile in Texas, and the only permits it mentioned were for breeding non native deer species. Obviously I'm looking in the wrong places.

Not so much funny as cool, the first time I ever had reptiles shipped to my house, the FedEx driver actually asked what I was getting and if he could come in and see. Seemed to really enjoy seeing what I had.
All my other stories aren't funny, like more or less getting banned from one store because I told a lady the truth about the iguana she was considering verses the bs the store clerk was feeding her. They didn't appreciate losing a sale to my honesty.

LOL I had a lady puff up and get mad because I told her green iguanas don't eat crickets. I assured her SOME species of iguana will but green iguanas do not and she still fumed

Lol, why would she be mad about that? Makes them cheaper to feed, honestly. Crickets get expensive fast, particularly when you factor in how much food disappears into an adult iguana. Our growing beardie would happily eat through 20 dollars worth of crickets in a week if we let her, and the smaller of the two iguanas I had grew to easily 6 times her size if not more.
People don't need animals if they can't even be bothered to research the dietary needs.
