Surprise Clutch
So my ball python surprised me with a clutch this morning! Exciting! But completely unexpected. She never gave me any signs except for not eating. With that being said, I need an incubator. I'm planning on overnighting one, I just need advice on which one. This is my first and only clutch. Thanks!

Hey, you don't have much time! Reptibator by zoomed or Hovabator. You need a thermostat also. They both come with built in tstats but its best to put the incubator on a reliable tstat. Congrats, and good luck!:gj:

Moms wrapped them. Will the eggs be ok until tomorrow?

Its possible, but you really would be better off artificially incubating them and it would be safer for the eggs. And that is just IMO. There is a bit of controversy on the topic of maternal incubation vs. artificial. Since you are not prepared for the clutch just wing it and hope for the best. Did you order the incubator and thermostat yet? Good luck either way! :gj:

Re: Surprise Clutch
Yep, everything comes tomorrow. I've called everywhere and nobody carries incubators so that's really my only choice. I'm sure she will take good care of them until tomorrow tho [emoji4] thanks for the help

I asked about the het possibility because with all that blushing on her lateral underbelly is apparent. IMO, she might be het for piebald. I guess we will find out when those hatchlings come out. Unless you get info from who you purchased her from? Great job!!!!!:gj:

I got her from LLL in 2010 at the San Jose reptile expo. She was my first snake and I wasn't planning on breeding her back then so it's possible she's het. I didn't care back then so I can't remember lol

Re: Surprise Clutch
So here's how everything panned out. I overnighted the Reptibator from Amazon which arrived on Friday afternoon. I opened up the box to find the styrofoam cracked and broken. I set it up anyways because I didn't really have any other options. Used duct tape on the crack.
I set up an egg box with perlite and the plastic grate thing. Filled with water. Covered with Saran Wrap. I allowed it to heat up and monitored the temps over night with an Accurite thermometer, as well at the little yellow thermometer you can get at petco. Also bought the two round thermometer/hydrometer from petco and put those in the egg box. The next morning, I moved the eggs to the egg box. Temps have been reading between 87-88 degrees. The highest temp it's reached was 88.5 during the hot afternoon.
Requested a new incubator because the first one was cracked and Amazon overnighted me another one. Switched the bad styrofoam box with the new one and sent the bad one back.
Over the weekend, I noticed that the round hydrometer (petco) that I put in the egg box wasn't reading more than 60%. I took it out and did the salt test.. Which it ended up being 35% off. Ugh. So I put the Accurite one in the egg box and it says the humidity is 99%.
Everything is looking good :)

Thanks, I wasn't sure. I don't think the op is sure of the possibility of het in either the dam nor the sire. :gj:

Re: Surprise Clutch
Sorry to hear about the crack in the incubator. At least now you are giving the most chance for your egg survivability. Looks like you have things under control and you covered your bases. Great job surrogate mom! Lol. :gj: :gj:

Seems like you are on the right track. Keep us posted on your progress.:)

Re: Surprise Clutch
Candled last night and saw them moving! Fascinating! Also, one of the eggs has a neon yellow spot on it? any ideas what it is?
-
Re: Surprise Clutch
This is a good turn out, I wouldn't fuss about spots the eggs, they are about to get way uglier :), Just ensure there's no molding on the eggs and you'll be fine.

Re: Surprise Clutch

Three out of the five have patterns like the one in the pic. Couldn't see the other two. [emoji16] Three killerbees?! Wouldn't that be awesome!

Thats alot of time im surprised they didnt have eggs before

Re: Surprise Clutch
Yeah, I guess she wasn't ready. Who knows. Lol
-
Re: Surprise Clutch
Since you did actually pair her with a male,I see less of a surprise and more procrastination on your part, for not having everything in advance before breeding.;)

Maybe HE wasn't ready! Very possible he wasn't producing sperm plugs. Female snakes also have the ability to store sperm and utilize it at a later time to fertilise the mature ova. Fantastic job and congrats to you!!! :D

killerbee and bumblebee are very hard to ID just through the egg but the killerbee look pattern is more reduce than the bee and also the color is faded
-
Re: Surprise Clutch
Anyone wanna make any guesses?
-
Re: Surprise Clutch
I'll say killer! Lol. I'm a hopeful one

Re: Surprise Clutch
So they've been incubating at 87.5-88.5 degrees. When should I except to see little heads?

Probably 57 or 58 days.

Re: Surprise Clutch
Thank you :) They're starting to get a little dimpled but all eggs look good and babies are moving so I'm assuming that's normal.

Sounds normal. Slight dimpling is fine, if you are concerned post a photo and I'll give you my opinion.

Re: Surprise Clutch
Today is day 46. They're definitely slightly deflated but they've looked like this for a while. All babies are moving and perfect... Humidity has been 99% in the box since day 1 so idk... Not really worried though. Here's what they look like:http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05...2bd6c9aa67.jpg

Do you have condensation on the inside of the tubs? That's really all I go by for humidity. If you don't have condensation, your humidity has probably been a bit low.
