What can I put in a 168 gallons tank ?
Hey guys and girls , I was offered a 168 gallon (170x50x75cm)tank a few days ago. As it was very cheap I decidet to just take it :D I've got my BP in a 53 gallon tank and I guess the 168 is way too big so I was hoping you guys could help me out on deciding what to put in there ? I love my BP so I'm going to stick with snakes any ideas ? Thx :)

Re: What can I put in a 168 gallons tank ?
Keeping a 168 gallons warm will be VERY difficult, cleaning will be a HUGE pain.
Aside from fish there is not much use for this.

im actually not worried about the temp and humidity I have a 100W heat lamp for the warm side and a big 40w heat mat for the cool side. The cleaning is not a big deal too me (I actually enjoy it :p) , my friend has a bigger one but the same format he's had it for a few years and keeps his boa constrictor in there he's actually very happy with it.

Well if you're going to stick with snakes, I would suggest either a dwarf retic, olive, or white lipped python. Most of these will stay in the 12 to 13 foot range and stay fairly thin so not too heavy to handle.

What was i it originally? Fish, reptile, something else?

It's a reptile tank (vents on top and front bottom) with slide doors

Did your friend ever use it or did they just buy it then let it sit and gather dust?

I would love a white lip or even a retic , but finding one in Austria would be like finding a unicorn :p you mainly find boas, balls, corns and kings hear. I've been thinking about a rainbow boa what do you think ? Or splitting it in the middle and getting 2 more BPs ? Thx for the input guys ! :)

Yea he had his boa constrictor constrictor in there , he got a bigger one that's why he got rid of this one. In Austria you even have a minimum size of about a 100 gallon for a bp(adult). I have no idea where they get these numbers from but I can't really do anything about it.

Ball pythons love termite mounds. tell someone to fit a 100 gal tank in there. They enjoy being touched on all side to feel secure, notice in lager enclosures they are alway in their hides. They also alway wedge them self in something even if it's paper towels over them in their tubs, they like it.

Big enough for a venomous enclosure, snake on one side while your on the other snake hook would fit

This is terrible advice if you ask me. Thinking you can have a venomous snake and not ever have to physically handle it is a very flawed logic and should not be recommended.
I don't think the snake would benefit from an extra large enclosure either.

hey it's negative Nancy, do you just stalk my posts hoping I misspell something so you can chime in? :gj:
I just ment it sounds big enough to almost get in and a hook wouldn't get caught up in big enclosure

haha thx for the input guys ! Im probable not gona get anything venomous, Im going to get a Brazilian rainbow boa ! As that is the tank size you need for one in Austria, I'm picking it up next month at a reptile expo (adult) I've spocken to the breeder And he thought that the set up was fine ! I'll post some photos once I'm done :)

Correction
Actually I just remembered that a hognose is a rear fanged venomous snake (correct me if I'm wrong) haha so yea i might get a venomous snake but in a much smaller enclosure :D love the hognoses

I'd say a live rock reef tank.

I was just watching a YouTube video on how hard it is for a hognose to actually use those little back fangs and the toxin is less reactive the a bee sting although you can be allergic to hognose venom also. They are less for this strike and more barbs to push food into the mouth. They are kinda cute if snakes can be cute.

I'm confused about your laws, each breed/species is assigned a cage size? I don't have a brb but I think they need high humidity (sometime hard to achieve in a large tank) and I know if I had to have a 170 gallons for one I could never have one sence that's the size of a city apartment. That would kill the trade here

Hold on a sec here, something about the original numbers given does not compute. I though it looked funny, so I went and found an online conversion calculator. Op gave a volume measurement in gallons, but linear measurements in cm. The numbers he gave dont match. If the linear measurements are close this is only about a 90gal tank at most. So before anyone makes too many more recommendations, OP can we please get some confirmation on the size of the tank? Or was the volume supposed to be in liters?
