Baby Boreno
My sweet little Boreno Struck at the , he was in the Corner of his favorite Plant I lifted it up And he followed my hand I kinda got the feeling real quick hes gonna get me He did My Husbandry is good temps /etc. He ate a small adult mouse 2 days ago, could he still be hungry... Or is this just what the Borenos do :) like I said we are learning each other. Any tips from anyone? Whats funny he has a nice hide box from Reptile Basics. I will steer him to the opening he goes in and two minutes hes back under this silly reptile plant.:):)

Maybe start hook training him. They are supposed to have a strong food response. Each time you go into his tub (not to feed, but to handle), stroke him with a hook, wire hanger, pvc pipe, etc. Do this each time and it should let him know that food is not coming and help get him "out of food mode". If he strikes though, don't leave him alone, because that will teach him that striking gets him left alone.
How long have you had him? If more than 2 weeks (and he has eaten for you 2-3 times) it should be ok to start handling sessions.
As for the hide... He may think it is too large and prefers the smaller plant. Put some balled up paper, etc. in the good hide so that it will feel snugger for him. That may help.

Maybe he's mad because you are saying his name wrong.
It's a Borneo as in born-eo, not Boreno as in bor-eno. :P

Re: Baby Boreno
He arrived December 2 and I left him alone for 4 days to recoup from his trip, I then started at least one time a day to get him out absolutely a Angel then he ate a mouse he turned down the Rat pup on Saturday evening, today he's showing me is Awsome power lol and I very familiar with the follow thru same as Parrots I was always the Biggest Bird so This little guy will learn he can't bully me. I will try the pvc pipe trick as I ordered a new hook just awhile ago. Thanks for the help I really do appreciate the input and help.

he looks nice. A couple points to consider:
1. Generally most snake folks recommend leaving the snake alone to de-stress and acclimate to their new environment at least 2 weeks before handling (changing bedding, feeding, etc. is OK, but wait to handle). Also, people alternatively recommend not handling until the snake has eaten at least 2-3 times consistently for you.
2. I am not sure with STPs, but with all of the other snakes I keep, you need to wait at least 48 hours after eating to handle, otherwise you risk a regurg which can be bad for the snake.
3. You might want to consider replacing the plant hide with another black one (like the one in the pic) that is the same size. This way, he has two options for temperature (I assume you have a hide on the warm and cool ends of the tank) but they are both the same.
Given that you just got him on the 2nd, I'd give him a week or so to settle in before continuing your handling. I am not sure on the feeding schedule for Borneos, but I assume they are once a week.. I'd feed him on whatever day is one week from your last successful feeding attempt, let him digest for a couple days, then try handling again.
Is this your first snake? Just curious as most people don't choose a STP for their first (due to the possible attitude and trickier handling). I hope you have good luck with him!

Re: Baby Boreno
Thank artgecko he is not my first snake, he has a different personality than my Ball's . I waited for a year before I bought one and In that year I studied and read and read about them but there is nothing like hands on experience. I am sure that over time he will become my Friend. I have a snake hook on the way to assist me on getting out of his tank. Thanks for the advice. ...

I have four Bloods, 3 of which I raised from young. When they are young they will strike and can be vocal and pissy with little reason. They are much more pig headed than a ball and let their opinion be I known.
You should have let it be for a week before starting to handle it. It needs time to get used to and feel comfortable in its new home. Then once you start handling you need to make steady motions and let it know you are not there to harm but a little strike is not going to make you leave. My young ones tagged me often but a few months in that was over except for shed times when they can be pretty ornery. I never used a hook and wanted them to get used to being touched by hand. Your snake will stay smaller than my Bloods but they are so heavy bodied and strong I rather have two good hands on them. Their power is no joke and make a Ball look like a wimp.
It is very common for stp to be vocal their entire life. All of mine hiss, huff, and puff whenever they are disturbed. This is normal and will not change. Working with them will get them used to you and you to them. Take it slow and don't push to hard so you dont stress it out. Make the handling short in the beginning(5-10mins).

Re: Baby Boreno
Thanks for your input , He refused his Black hide so I removed it and the Favorite Plant and put in a Rock Cave Style and he went right in it Snake hook is on the way also some long feeding tongs. I wad amazed by his power when I feed him. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...335977eb31.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...c3e4654492.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...086618cf4c.jpg

You cant correct the spelling and then refer to it as a Blood. Its a Short Tail, not a Blood.
Here are the different species. http://bloodpythons.com/cms/index.php/species-info
OP, If it likes the plant leave it in. Also these guys like to burrow so having the cool side covered with a thick layer of substrate will work as a perfect hide for it.

Re: Baby Boreno
Thats what I will do he can have his own way at furnishings and some time to just feel secure............... :snake:

Ahh. I had to go research this because I've been out of the herp world for a while, and specifically haven't read about Bloods or Short Tail pythons in a while.
Here's the confusion: Back in the day they were all considered sub-species, and people used "Blood" as the common name for Red Bloods (or just Bloods), Black Bloods (Sumatran), and Borneos. (Scientific names were Python Curtus Brongersmai, P.C.Curtus, and P.C.Breitensteini respectively). Hence I was referring to them generically as a "Blood" as the people in my circles called all Python.Curtus.X snakes "Bloods."
But... since then (it appears around 2000/2001 or so), taxonomists established that Bloods, Sumatrans, and Borneos are separate species and they were elevated as such, and the "curtus" was dropped (now being just P. Brongersmai, P. Curtus, and P. Breitensteini). Therefore I'll refer to them more accurately from now on and discourage others from calling a "borneo" a "blood python" as well. :)
Thanks.
Learn something new every day...can't wait until tomorrow. :)
(I'm sure you probably know this, but others, like myself, may not...which is why I posted my findings).

Ha ha - no worries at all. I hate making silly mistakes like that and I was like "DOH!! WHAT??" Like you said - especially after I was just giving someone ELSE a hard time. My bad for sure. Great learning opportunity. I appreciate the heads up. Certainly don't want to pass along my own ignorance, LOL. :)

Its cypress mulch. That one is a Bangka x Het Albino Red Blood Python. I have three of those and one regular Red Blood.
Bangka is a local from the Bangka Island. They are known to be a very nice pink to red when mature. Mine are getting more pink to them with every shed.
