Too Soon?
We are fairly new to this site & have only had Kaa (our normal) for almost 4mths. He went from not eating & always "balling up" when held to eating regularly (weekly) and loving to explore when handled. We are seriously considering getting a friend for him, a morph, since we have been doing pretty good keeping Kaa.
What I'm asking is, is it too soon to add a second?

Sorry, I'm just waiting for the arguments to start. To be helpful (I'm sorry for my first post not being helpful in the least) I can give you my personal opinion.
Snakes do not need friends. If you are planning on housing them together, you're going to have a lot of people on here arguing about what a terrible idea that is. Personally, again, I have been keeping snakes for...almost 4 years now? I would never house them together. The cons outweigh the pros and I don't consider myself nearly experience enough, nor have the unlimited time to make it work. Being a new snake owner, I would not advise getting your snake any friends.
However, the good news is, you can get another snake! I would get a separate enclosure for it. Can it be done? Yes, but it'll take you more than 4 months to figure out how to do so safely.

TOTALLY appreciate your input! Yes, they will be in separate homes.... we have an extra enclosure. I probably should have included more details. When I say I'd love a "friend for Kaa" I really mean WE want another.
I had originally decided not to get a second snake unless we were able to keep ONE healthy and happy.... Kaa has adjusted well and has even gone through his first shed with us successfully which is why I'm considering getting another. Hence the purpose of this post, if we should wait, we will.

Ha! Well, in that case...go for it! If you feel confident enough why not? What morph are you thinking about?

I'm looking at a Lesser or Butter.... Still new to this but one prospect is labeled a Lesser Platinum and the other a Butter Ghost. I've been looking through this forum and I'm totally in love with Lessers and Butters!
-
I love my lesser! Butter and lesser is (arguably) the same thing, just a different line. Ghost however is completely different. You can't go wrong with a nice lesser or butter :gj:
-
Ok! Yes, I've seen and read that they are the same/similar and it's obvious why I'm drawn to both lol I will now stalk your posts to see your lesser haha!! I am pulled more towards the Butter Ghost but we will see :D

Thank you so much for this! :gj:

If you are ready for another snake. Go for it. Like she said the main thing is do not house them in the same enclosure. It will most likley be an addiction. I started with 1 and went to 11 in one year. Butters/Lessers are definatly beautiful snakes.

It's never enough :D
BUT it's all about what you can handle. I'm at 14 snakes and that's my limit for a while...it can get overwhelming.

We have so many other animals!! I like pairs but usually end up with 3 of everything lol so maybe 3 will be the magic number [emoji39]

We went from 1 to 15 in a few months....also added rats to our household....

Re: Too Soon?
Ok so here's another question (or two) for you all, since you have SO many lol.... Do you handle them all equally?? Is handling them regularly a total must?
I ask because we handle Kaa pretty regularly. We leave him alone for a couple of days after eating then handle him a couple of times a day in between feedings.

Not at all. They're not animals that need, or even desire, social interaction with us. They'll tolerate being handled, but if it were up to them they'd rather be tucked away in their nice warm hides waiting for another rat to drop from the sky. :)

It's normal to want to snuggle your newly acquired ball python. I know I did, but I rarely handle mine now. I love the just the same, and I take a few out much more than any of the others, but that's for my own selfish reasons. I have a few that would have my head if I tried to snuggle them  my male yellowbelly is a jerk!

Don't be too overly concerned. Different BPs have different tolerances. Some you could carry around with you all day long and they'd still behave (read: eat) normally. Some get upset and will refuse a meal if you've done something silly like move them for a couple of seconds while cleaning up after them the day before. As long as he's eating well, there's really no reason to not enjoy interacting with your new arrival! Just keep in mind that the feeling's not exactly mutual. ;)

Ours get handled often and show no signs of stress.

Awesome, thank you! He seems to enjoy it & eats really well :) I can usually tell when he is getting irritated with me so I put him back lol when handled, I only keep him out for maybe 10 minutes at a time :snake:

Re: Too Soon?
Be careful, this is a sure sign that you are becoming addicted to ball pythons. [emoji6]
