I don't have either, but I would go digital any time I had a choice. Have seen a lot of good things said about Hydrofarm products though.

Heat tape was origionally made for plants (seeds actually) seems like everyone uses that for reptiles. Thermostats arent use specific...now companies that cater to say reptiles will add additional safetly controls. You will start seeing the differences when you get into higher end stats like spider robotics and helix.

Here's a thread with research kitedemon did that made me reconsider the hydrofarm:

A little scary, IMO. Lots and lots of people have had success with the hydrofarm; however failing open at full temp is too much for me to worry about; my snake will be my baby and I don't want to put him/her anywhere near that situation. When I do get a snake I am leaning towards the Hobbystat, but it's so new it seems to not have had much research put into it. So I have the luxury of waiting to see what comes of it.

Good deal. I haven't been able to find anything like that level of detailed testing for the Hobbystat, and I don't know of the manner that it fails in either; however my thinking is that it comes from a brand that is accustomed to making products for reptiles and that makes me a bit more comfortable. But time will tell just how it fares.

I really like my Hydrofarms! I have three of the one you posted. They're straight-forward to use, perform well, and I trust my snakes with them. I really recommend them.

Flex watt wasnt made for reptiles. But people use it. Tanks r made for fish. People use them. Ur point is invalid. Theres plenty of things in todays world that are not used for their original purpose. If it works for what u want it too, then use it.

It does, but heat tape was made for plants as well.

LoL........ 90% of what we use to care for our reptiles wasn't made for our purpose.

My point is not invalid...AT ALL!

That is 100% the difference from here and a petstores aswell!

You can live in a heated shed aswell! But do you? No. You live in what was made for humans..... Again you can rate things.

Sure hydro farms work. Hell so do rherostats... BUT do they work to the best? No....

I get very aggetated with these topics because everyone wants to "CHEAP OUT" on this very part (mostly because pet stores never tell you about them) And you are keeping this animal as a pet, Your responsibility to give it bet chance.

I personally would go with Hobbystat>hydro anyday... Take a look at the +/- and realize HOW big of a gap(also shown in article)

a VE or a Herpstat 1/basic is a 100$ more, but YOU WILL have the trust it was made 100% for your animal, And will give you proper heating, vs heating dirt. where the temp swings don't matter as much as it does for a reptile.

Sure heat tape isnt, but take alook at the new Heat tape comming in THG... This was deisgned for reptiles giving most even heat through entire surface....Slowly we make things deigned for keeping animals. But hey its up to you! Even having a hydrofarm is better then having nothing at all. Just use foresight, Best of luck!

What makes the new THG "reptile specific" even distribution of heat? You can put reptile specific on anything and mark the price up. The only downside to a hydrofarm is that fact that if it fails it goes full throttle, I am looking for the article now, but I am pretty sure I read the new ones actually cut power if there is a failure. I have used my Hydrofarm for 2 years now, with no issues, I monitor my temps daily, the delta is only 1-2 degrees. Sure if you go out and buy a spider robotics unit or a helix or VE then you get more controls, but if you look at the entry level tstats on/off they are all basically the same internally.

I looked at the specifications and manual for the VE HobbyStat and didn't see where it fails at full throttle, or whether it cuts off. Or do all VE's cut off when they fail?
