Why BP.net
Why call it BP.net if its for all this other stuff? Why not call it every animal on the earth.net?
-
Not all of us are single-minded. We are humans with varying interests, and most of us love all kinds of animals, some of use only love a few, and all of us have personal preferences.
We're complex and we like to talk, so sue us.

Its not about single minded. BP.net gives the idea its all about BP.
-
I guess the only person who can actually give a answer is the person who made the site. Just seem kind of odd to name a site after a single animal but try to cover them all in sub forms.

And it is, for the most part. We have subforums for most other species of reptile, and other subforums for other genae. But the bulk of the information and commentary we provide is relevant to BPs.

Re: Why BP.net
Why is Facebook called Facebook? It's not a face. It's not a book.
Why isn't it called pretend-you-know-and-like-everyone-you've-ever-met-and-add-them-to-your-page-so-they-can-see-what-you-had-for-dinner-and-look-at-only-your-most-flattering-head-shots-and-get-daily-memes-reminding-them-not-to-mess-with-texas?
Best not to question the small stuff. You can drive yourself mad with wonder.

Actually its name fits its purpose. Its name comes from a colloquialism for the directory given to students at some American universities.

100% of the people here keep or are wanting a ball python. We just also happen to have other animals too.
We come here for the BP's, we discuss other things too.

This is how many forums are started. You want to attract people with similar interests. You then find out, low and behold, these folks have other interests as well that don't all mesh up so good. They start posting pictures of their big ugly camel on your pretty pony forum. It's amusing at first - people dig it and say stuff like "nice looking camel"; but then other camel people start coming out of the woodworks. Catastrophe is upon you, while you were looking the other way your pretty pony forum became a safe haven for spitting camel cameos. To avoid this unsavory scenario, the smart admin creates sub categories for people to share their various interests. These categories seldom, if ever, get larger than the primary one so there really is no need for a domain name change like you suggest. If it bothers you, you do have the option to bookmark just the forum(s) in which you're interested.

Well maybe more like 99%. :P I have no desire to keep ball pythons (don't have anything against them, I'm just a boa person!). I'm here because this is an awesome forum for more than just ball pythons. And there are some really awesome people on here, and some fantastic looking animals, ball pythons and otherwise.

What's so wrong with ball pythons? I'm sure you've had one in the past surely.

Are amoebas animals?
If they are, I'm getting some. After researching husbandry and checking my local ordinances, of course.

Nope. I have kept reptiles for eighteen years now (lizards and turtles), but I've only actually owned one snake, my boa. I've been in love with boas since I was five and first held one. I've gotten to help with ball pythons, and several other snakes. But they aren't my thing. Ball pythons are cute, and there are lots of really awesome things about them, but I'm just a boa person. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them. They just don't appeal to me in a way that makes me want one. My best friend keeps two of them, so I get to visit.
-
I don't own any ball pythons nor have I ever. I'm not really interested in actually owning one either. But their genetics fascinate me and I love looking at all the morph combos, which is why I'm here!

Exactly :gj:
Ball pythons are very pretty, and have lots of awesome traits. Just not my thing. I have some friends over on the boa constrictor forums that don't keep or want to keep boas. But they like hanging out and talking about reptiles in general. And even though they don't want a boa, they still like looking at them.
-
Simple answer, Ball Pythons are the main/founding animal for the site. Everything else is to support the interests of the members within reason.
-
Wow...so much fuss!
First off, it's definitely a mistake to say 100% of the folks who enjoy our site are all about ball pythons. We've worked hard over the years to make the site appealing to all facets of the herping community and I, for one, find it very gratifying to know that some members enjoy the site without a particular interest in ball pythons.
To answer the original question...
When the site was started over ten years ago, it's sole focus was ball pythons. That was the intent of the original creator and the dozen or so folks who kicked it off. But ball python enthusiasts also love other snakes, other reptiles, and ultimately, other animals. Early on, when the new ownership took over (me and three others) we worked on broadening the site's mission, giving the community a safe place to come and learn how to take care of their reptiles...not just ball pythons.
The site's reputation and "brand" were already solid and growing deeper roots into the community on a daily basis. There was no desire or need to change the name. And, we're still happy to have our main focus on ball pythons, since that is a "first herp" for many, many people...and, like it or not, it is a HUGE part of the overall herping community.
So yeah....we're BP.net....and we're proud of it! :P

Yes Judy, guy (or gal) asks a simple albeit pointless question, then gets accused of being a site hater.
How about you rename the site pms.com?

This site IS almost all about bp's. The traffic in all the other sections combined is still almost no existent compared to the bp threads.
I like my bp but I like mostly like other types of snakes/reptiles. When I come on this site the none bp sections I check sometimes don't get activity for days or weeks when bp themed sections get activity every minute.

If the subtle inference here is that Fishdip is a big scary meanie, then put him on ignore or steer clear of his threads.
I cannot wait until some of you start spitting out kids. This habit of rewarding behavior you don't like by giving them MORE attention is going to make your life downright miserable.

We'll need a subsection of the forum for kids. If something comes shooting outta my kids mouth, I'd only trust uncle skippy to tell me if it's regurgitating or vomiting. :)
EDIT: also Idk what you mean, when I was little and acted up i was rewarded with more attention, in the form of an ass whooping or a smack upside the head haha

Baby steps. Before contemplating kids you need to get a woman. Not one with a PSI rating and a label warning about rubber allergies, but a real one with all the working parts.
Then you need to figure out what to do with that woman.
Then we can talk.

There's half your problem.

Re: Why BP.net
Had the OP joined BP.net maaany years ago....it its formative stages, yes it WAS indeed a solely ball pythons forum. But as the group grew, the site "evolved" if you will, to include other interests of ball python owners who had different kinds of snakes, and even other animals. Even to this day, the MAIN focus is STILL ball pythons. The greater majority of members that are drawn here, new or old, were originally drawn here because of ball pythons. If you do a google search on anything ball python related, i can almost guarantee that this site will be in the top ten time n time again. So if the main focus is ball pythons, why should it be called anything different?

Same reason amazon.com isn't about the largest river in the world it's a site that sells underwear and weight sets.

Wow 10 years that's older then most of the snakes on this site.
It always cracks me up to see the same people who are always so fast to belittle a new member for doing something wrong. In turn are the same ones running around crying about this thread. :gj:

To the OP. I wondered the same thing myself. kingsnake.com is another one. I figured that it started about bps and grew. after a while you'll notice this is kind of like a family. There are cliques and people argue. Newbies will inevitably ask questions that have been answered a million times. There will always be the jerks who will make themselves feel superior by making them feel dumb. There will always be those willing to offer advice even if its readily available in another thread. There will always be the moms...i mean MODS, that will put us in timeout when we get out of line.
If anything, this should be called thehumongousdysfunctionalfamilyofherploversandweirdos.net
ooh, idea for new thread! :D
