Is this enough room for air or am I covering too much?

That should be ok.

imo that's plenty :) a lot of people keep them in bins with 8-10 small holes in them (including me) and never had an issue :)

You really can't cover too much, the holes in the light fixture would be enough if you somehow managed to seal everything else. You'll know by what your humidity reads, if it's too high, uncover more, too low cover some up.

indeed the holes in the light fixture would be enough, just wanted to point out that you want to be careful with anything flammable touching those lights. personally i definitely wouldn't let a towel or anything touch the skirt for the light. you could do something like a piece of plexi glass and cut out a hole for the light, that way you can look down into the cage, and if humidity got to high just drill a hole or 2 on the plexi and of course it would be less of a fire hazard, just an idea :)

Good to know. My humidity could be a bit higher so I may try to cover more with aluminum foil tonight. It's been a painful 24 hrs trying to maintain a good humidity for shedding.

Thanks for the idea. I've wanted to get some plexiglass for it but I don't know how exactly to go about it. Just measure the area of the top and go into a store and ask? I think I read Home Depot somewhere but not positive.

the tub and heat tape set up is much better for humidity, but only having one snake i understand the appeal of the tank because u can make it look pretty and natural. a spray bottle with water would do wonders for humidity but you would have to spray it 2 or 3 times a day, if you use an absorbent substrate like paper towels during shedding you could soak the paper towels to keep humidity up. covering the open areas will increase humidity but will also increase the overall temp so keep an eye on that too :)

iv always had some laying around from work iv never purchased it but i know its pricey, also when your cutting the hole out for the light it cracks real easy under stress... there may be a better material to use

polycarbonate is cheaper altho iv never tried to cut this so i don't know how easy it would be to cut a circle into it..

Home Depot or Lowes will have it. They'll even cut the piece to the size you need.

You could also just add a sphagum moss shed box or throw some wet sea sponges in there thats used for hermit crabs when hes shedding. Dont stress to much about it

Depending on how much work you want to do you could also ditch the screen top altogether and build a custom lid. Doesn't help much right this second,, but it would be easy to cut a piece of plywood and make cutouts for the light and what not, then just seal it with polycrylic and your good. I've even done adjustable venting before, so don't limit yourself to what you can get from the petstore.

Hmm I would like to eventually try to make something myself come to think of it. That would probably solve a lot of my humidity problems right now. I never would have even thought that I can make a different top and keep the same tank that's a really good idea thank you. That is obviously going to take a lot of planning and thinking because I have no idea how to even start doing that so in the meantime I guess that I could shop around see which ideas will work for me and him

I would use aluminum foil and cover the whole thing and cut out a place for the lights. I get great humidity this way.

You just need to figure out what tools and skills you have at your disposal, and whether you have a friend who can help cover what you need. I've made tops as simple as a plain chunk of plywood with some holes drilled in and the surface sealed against moisture, to ones with the lights built in, adjustable venting and a feeding door. You may even go a little nuts later on and build your own custom enclosure, and have everything exactly as you want it. For now though I would do like Doggy75 says and cover with foil.

Cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside the frame of the screen, cover it in aluminum foil and use foil tape to seal all the seams. You are then good to go.:gj:

If in shed n ur trying to get humidity up just dampin some paper towel and put it in the tank around the uth ... and spray down the tank couple times of day N u can move the water dish over uth
