Greetings from a cold and windy Wales
    Hello folks,

Its a pleasure to find this forum. Some great reading here. I am infact snake-less. Im trying to decide between a Ball Python or Kenyan Sand Boa - which seems to be a common problem for newbie snake owners, like myself. Ive owned fish, dogs, birds, cats and Im now looking to enjoy some snake husbandry ! Always been fascinated by reptiles and I hope to share my journey with this forum in the coming weeks.

Hmmm, when whales break wind, is it really that cold???? They are warm blooded creatures after all....:D:D:D

Anyhooo... Welcome to the site, I personally recommend ball pythons for a first snake. However corn snakes are very nice as well if you like something a little more active, and boas are great if you like something just a bit larger. Then again carpet pythons are great if you like something large and active. In any case, snakes make great pets.

Lol ! Well there is a lot of wind in Wales ! Trust me, its out diet !

Yes, I am leaning towards trying a Ball Python. They look fantastic and the general consensus is they are docile and fun pets for a beginner. Don't want something to perky. I do have question about heat mats. Ive got the Exo Terra 18 (W) 18 (D) 12 (H) terrarium and Im stumped to which size heat mat to choose - 11inch by 11inch ? or 17inch by 11inch ? Confused ! :rolleye2:

11"x11" should be fine, but the most important thing is how to regulate it. You'll need a thermostat to control the temperature or either one will get too hot without one.

Well the Royal has arrived folks. 8 month old male normal. I had a quick hold of him before letting him rest in my tank and he was so placid and relaxed. It was the first time Ive even touched a snake and I wasn't frightened at all. Infact I had trouble putting him down in the tank ! He slithered straight into the warm hide and has been there since 1pm. Popped his head out once or twice - once for a nosey, second for a yawn.

    Love the little fella.

It hasn't been easy setting up his tank. Temps being the biggest issue. I had to opt for a bigger heat mat and that did the job nicely. Still a bit nervous as its my first snake.

Greetings from a snowy and cold... Georgia USA? Yeah its blizzard 2014 here.. which means about 2 inches on the ground but its enough to shut down the entire state.

Anywho! Grats on your new baby! I got all the things I need for my new snake but I can't decide which one I want either. Ball python, African House Snake, or Children's Python. Sooo many choices and then you add the morphs and my brain is sizzled.:weirdface I gotta figure this thing out so when it warms up I can have my baby shipped to me. Let's see them pictures soon!

Hey I know, we just have rain here. I wouldn't mind a touch of snow, but not a blizzard ! I was very undecided about which snake to get, but after holding my little Royal - it was game over. We have a winner ! Yes I will definitely try to grab a pic or two when he appears hopefully later today. I wish I had the camera to hand earlier when he yawned. :O

Hello everyone, I am also new here and I am thinking to raise a ball python now.
A very silly question. what does 1.0 0.1 mean, I saw a lot of them. Do they mean female and male?

He has not kept still tonight, by far his most active night since he arrived home Tuesday. He is right at the front of the tank doing laps watching me ! I plan on feeding him this Sunday, as this is when he was last fed at the store. I don't know if this nosey behaviour is normal for a new snake ?

Possibly him being nosey and exploring his new home, but it is also breeding season! So he will be on the search for a female, making him more active!
