List of Boa constrictor Sub-Species and Localities
I am posting this in an effort to save the information where others can also readily view it. I've had so many folks ask me what's the difference between a sub-species and locality and/or ask "what kind of boa do I have??" What I would love to have all of you help me with is to post a picture of your Sub-Species or locality-specific boa here in this thread.
This list is as complete as I can make it. And please note: we are dealing with Species, Sub-Species, and Localities here - NOT morphs.
Hopefully, this thread can then be used to help people identify their boa and provide some insight to how this species is divided.

Re: List of Boa constrictor Sub-Species and Localities
This is awesome Kali! Great idea for those of us who get confused easily about BCO/BCI/BCC etc. :)
I suspect Daybreaker and Gio will make appearances. ;)
Auto-vote for sticky!!

Re: List of Boa constrictor Sub-Species and Localities
Barranquilla Colombian BCI.
This locality is said to be what a natural cross between a BCC and a BCI would look like according to Vin Russo.
The scale counts differ from "common" Colombian BCI'S. These boas display almost perfect circles down their backs and often have ladder tails.

Gorgeous pictures everyone!!!
While I LOVE seeing pictures of the Colombian morphs, lets try to keep this to the specific localities and sub-species. Eventually, I'd like to start a thread for the morphs too, but I wanted this particular thread to help people identify the various sub-species and subsequent localities without the added confusion of the vast number of morphs involved, lol.
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed with pictures! Let's see more awesomeness posted up! :gj:

Re: List of Boa constrictor Sub-Species and Localities
Every one of you should be ashamed of yourselves for rubbing your gorgeous boas in my face. Especially daybreaker, who posted the best example of Hog Island color change I've ever seen!
Seriously though, gorgeous animals, all of them. Thanks for sharing. If it weren't for the fact that IBD absolutely TERRIFIES me, I would love to have a Hog Island or Dumeril myself.

Thank you so much for your compliments! This is a male sunglow motley boa. I just got him (my first boa) this summer. I would highly recommend a boa if you are looking for a mid size snake that is fun to handle and easy/tame for beginners. I will upload more photos in the new year.
Happy Holidays!

Wah, I read right over where it said to hold off on morphs: if a mod wants to edit my post to make it more relevant to the thread's topic feel free to edit.

Well I had no idea that there was more to the Colombians than just well... Colombian, haha. So is it that there are "Colombian" boas, and then there are "Colombian Barranquilla" and then "Colombian Peters Type B" (meaning there are 3 types of Colombians), or are the "Peters Type B" and "Barranquilla" the two types of Colombian boas? :confusd:
-
Re: List of Boa constrictor Sub-Species and Localities
Also the rare Colombian BCC and the Leticia Colombian BCIs. The Leticia BCI's may actually be Peruvian BCC according to Russo from the book THE COMPLETE BOA CONSTRICTOR. It is possible the said boas from that region were only shipped from there.
Even still, the "common Colombian boa" is not always so common.
The Barranquilla Colombian boa: Seen here,
http://i772.photobucket.com/albums/y...a/DSC00712.jpg
often resembles some of the "Key West" boas, or actually the other way around as Key West boas are beautiful morphs that look like the Barranquilla locality with some obvious differences.

Barranquilla and Peters Type B are the only 2 known PURE lines of Colombian BCI. Other Colombians (aka, common boas) are not really pure and are of varied or mixed locales.
So the short answer to your question is, yes, there are Colombian, Barranquilla Colombian, and Peters Type B Colombian BCI. :gj:

Re: List of Boa constrictor Sub-Species and Localities
Any more progress on this?
It would be nice if they could refine the thread and get the pics with the label and make it a sticky thread.
I love the locality boas!!

That was my goal Gio. I'm a bit disappointed to see the lack of interest. I thought it would be a valuable tool - especially since we all get asked the question so often.....

Yes, sort of a bummer. I wish I could help more but I'm a 1 boa, 1 royal and 2 dogs guy. The last 3 won't work for this thread LOL!
I had visions of a photo layout like the Russo book only the animals would be from the people here.
I think its a great idea,,,, COME ON FOLKS,,,,,, there's gotta be some more locality boa owners here!
Don't let this thread die.

Re: List of Boa constrictor Sub-Species and Localities
More detail on the Barranquilla, Colombian BCI. If this thread comes together pick one of my 3 photos (2 are posted in other responses) and use whatever you think is the best one.
These are pics from the summer. This snake has hit a growth spurt which is a bit odd this time of year, so if I post any more, the size difference will be obvious.

Here is the deal with "Common" Colombian boas. They really are not common, or necessarily pure Colombian. This, again is from Gus Renfro, whom I feel has about as much boa knowledge as anybody. The locality Colombians Kali mentioned are traced back to the region where they were caught. Those boas were placed in a captive breeding program in which the goal was to keep the lines pure and therefore only bred boas from that area to others from the same area.
Mind you they have been captive bred for several generations, however in theory there was NO mixing or out crossing from the original dam and sire. Unless they used other boas from the same locality.
The "common boa", if not identified as a locality, has more than likely been bred to other subspecies, morphs or whatever and then given birth and maybe crossed back to another "common boa". It's not a bad thing, but it's more than likely what is out there or what most own unless you have credible info from the breeder.
This is why when people ask about their type of boa and, what they have, nobody can really answer the question.
"Looks like a BCI, but I see some BCC." Or "I see some Central American in it, but it has BCC saddles".
This is ABSOLUTELY NOT a knock on anything considered "common". As a matter of fact some of the huge common boas we see probably have been the product of crossing BCC and BCI somewhere in the linage. Morphs are a prime example, they may have started as Colombian then been crossed with a colorful CA. But now what is it??
So when the topic is "locality" the boas really need to be from the area. Nobody mistakes a true Suri with a Hog Island, because a locality breeder's goal is,,, well,, the locality.
Anybody get what I'm saying here?
BTW xFenrir,,, I think your boa is beautiful!

1.0 Cat (Loki)
0.1 Dumerils Boa (Cerin)

Thank you for contributing your Dumerils! You are right - most definitely a boa.
I do want to point out - just for those who may be viewing this thread to make identifications, that Dumerils do not fall under the species Boa constrictor. Their species is Boa dumerili. While, yes, they are in fact a Boa, they are found on a different continent from Boa constictor. Boa constrictor, and all sub-species are found in South American, Mexico, and the surrounding islands. Boa dumerili is found on the African island of Madagascar. ;)
