Corrected my Manager about BP Morphs
I work at Petco, and the other day was feeding day for all the snakes.
We currently have two pastels and a spider, along with the normals. (They're not in the same tank, of course).
The manager went to put the pastels in the normals' enclosure, and I told her, "Those are the pastels." She pointed at the spider (which was already put away) and said, "No, that's the pastel."
I told her, "No, that's the spider. The ones with yellow on their sides are the pastels." She looked at them for a second and was like, "Oh."
I think some of the employees need a refresher course on the (as they're referred to in the store) 'specialty colors.' ;)

At least he knew they were ball pythons. ;)

Petco near me keeps all the BPs together and they are priced the same. The fish/reptile keeper was stunned when I pointed out a lesser butter a few weeks ago!

You should have saved the poor fellow considering they probably only wanted like 80$ for him

Cedor, I couldn't agree more.
plus it's also ridiculous that the manager of a pet store doesn't know what he or she is talking about..to do your job you should know all aspects of it..I'm not allowed to not know my job.
OP maybe you need to look into getting the position as a manager,I'm sure you'd be way better. Some people don't deserve there job titles, while others deserve it.
manager= supervisor another term for supervisor is stupidvisor, fits the bill almost every time

I did and he was a gorgeous little addition until unexpectedly dying last week. I'm still upset at his passing, he was a beautiful snake and very sweet.

Re: Corrected my Manager about BP Morphs
My daughter works at Banfield in a Petsmart. One day they were looking for the Rosy Boa they had as no one could locate it. It had been there the day before and no one had purchased it. After asking a few of the employees, one of them said,"I just put it back with the other one". The manager said, "we don't have another one, can you show me where"? The employee pointed to the tank where sat, a very fat and happy looking ........duhn, duhn, duuuhhhhnn, "Albino Kingsnake".
Just remember, when you don't know what your doing, you could be an accomplice to "murder."

No. They were both little things, probably 12 to 14 inches or so, the way my daughter described. Obviously the king was big enough though and the Boa, well not so much.

It may not be the case in all petco/petsmarts but every store i've ever gone into the employees rarely know anything about the reptiles they care for. I got a job at a petco for a few months and literally two weeks after getting the job they promoted me to a dept manager because no one else knew anything about their reptiles or arachnids. It still astounds me that they feed fuzzy mice to juvie ball pythons (not hatchlings) many of them were several months old.

Feeding mice to ball pythons could be one of two different issues.
1. Mice are less expensive than rats
2. They don't have a clue what they're doing
My vote is for the latter.

Actually, you're right--it's not all big chain stores. The petco by me has a lady working there who breeds ball pythons, and takes it upon herself to care for all the herps. She does a great job, but there's only so much you can do when the rest of your coworkers are incompetent. If she's not there, all of the other employees are either afraid of everything in that section (one lady lifted the hide and jerked her hand back and yelped...about a tiny little hatchling ball. I told her I'd get it...before she got her dumb--ahem--bitten!) or just uneducated/don't care. She was away for a week's vacation, and when she came back, she said she had to treat everyone for mites because someone didn't quarantine a batch of new arrivals. >_<
I'd love a job there! xD My husband would probably kill me, though, because I'd want to bring home a new friend every week. xD

ball pythons are finally legal where I am so the local pet store got a bunch in. They're selling a ghost as a pastel and I let one of the managers know but he said it was for sure a pastel. I would have tried to be more convincing but I don't really want to tell someone how to do their job (or not be allowed back in :P)

I had to literally chew out my manager at petco because they had juvie balls on minimal feed, im sure you've seen how small the packaged fuzzies are from petco, and they were feeding two foot long red tails the same thing. I don't know what is wrong with these people. I have never worked at a place where so many people bi....*complain* about animal treatment yet mistreat the animals under their care.

Yeah, I've noticed there are some decent places that do have people who care for their reptiles out here, but most are smaller stores. I'm actually trying to get a store investigated at the moment, my girlfriend and I went in to a place called critters to check out their reptiles and found several sick animals and a dead ball python in its cage. Absolutely disgusting. I told the manager and he told me that he would "take care of it later" absolute crap if you ask me. More places need to hire people with experience in reptile care if they want to carry them. Same goes for any animal a pet store carries.

I'm starting to wonder if these big box pet stores think of reptiles as lesser creatures that they are forced to deal with. There's no other logical reason for not getting your employees the proper training in dealing with these little guys.

From what I understand, it's difficult to really make money off the animals. At least the kind of money these chain stores are expecting to make... The real money comes from selling the equipment. The animals just draw the kids in and have the "I want that" effect, which of course means they can sell equipment to people to go with the animal.
It's pretty unethical to have stores set up that sell animals the same way you'd sell produce. Especially when there's so many breeders offering better quality at better prices... Some stores manage it better than others, but all around I'm sometimes surprised it's legal.

^ I agree here. Most of the balls at my local pet store are so underfed, it's sad. I asked to hold the Pastel that they had there, and the guy was freaking out about how nippy she was. And I was just like. "Look, I'll get her, good Lord." He seemed confused when I stuck my hand in and pulled her out, no issues.
Friends of mine have found dead beardies, and leopards. I buy my mice from them, but I probably wouldn't ever buy a reptile from them.

I guess that I'm the lucky one in this group. The PetSmart in my town has a lot of knowledgeable people working in their reptile/small animal sections. Most of them have various types of reptiles that they own themselves, and will go into detail to help you learn about what you want to get. Very impressive, in my opinion. Unlike the PetCo that's a town over. They are complete morons. They had a display setup with pastels and I asked did they sell them all. They told me that they were currently being fed. My first question was why would they take them off display in the middle of the day to feed them instead of at night before closing. I then said I'd like to buy one, and they said I'd have to wait for some guy to come off break because they were afraid to mess with any of them. Needless to say, I left without a snake. Poor creature.

Re: Corrected my Manager about BP Morphs
It's not just the chains. I went to a local reptile shop and saw a baby Columbian Rainbow Boa. When I asked to see him the guy working there said he was aggressive and told me I could get him out because he always got bit. I reached in and picked him up with no problem. The guy said he was shocked not only that it didn't bite me, but that I let my kids hold it.
One of my local Petco's had a baby Brazilian Rainbow this summer. Same story, except the employees were all interested in watching, but took a couple steps back from the tank while I searched in the substrate to find it. When I bumped it, it came out of the substrate and struck my finger. I even heard a couple gasps. It was all of 12 inches long! LOL

Keeping the cost low and the product "cute"
I've worked in a chain store for nearly a year and after being "corrected" by cooperate for feeding our snakes too much/ too large prey a coworker & myself decided to decipher why they would want us to feed minimal / small prey. I believe not only does it keep the cost down, but it keeps the product small enough to house in the small display habitats & keeps the product "cute" & baby like. Everything is more appealing when it's small and cute with "awe" potential unfortunately. Both chain & small mom and pop shops have a long way to go in herp care, but the more we educate the better it will be!
