    ....pet rat :(

Lol well I got Clyde dinner last Friday, and, he refused to eat it. I felt bad for the rat being in a little box with no food or water, so, I bought him a little cage, food, hide, and water bottle so I could keep him comfortable until tomorrow (feeding day). But during the last week I have spent a lot of time with the little guy and have gotten attached to him lol. So tomorrow I will be buying a new rat for Clyde's dinner and Greg (my daughter insisted on naming him that) will get to spend the rest of his life as a happy pet rat ha has this ever happened to anyone else? I never thought of a rat as a potential cool pet, but Greg, is awesome! :)

I had this happen with my kingsnakes dinner when I was younger. She wouldn't eat it so we kept it in a little tank and I named him Jerry. He was the fattest and happiest little mouse I've ever known. Very friendly and loved to create little nests of shredded newspaper. Spoiled and happy mouse he was.

Rats are great pets...you'll have lots of fun with Greg (cool name BTW).
Hopefully you won't end up building a colony this way...

I know this would happen to me 100% if I had to feed live. Which is why I do frozen/thawed. I get attached to things easily.

To be honest I've always been more scared of rats then snakes, but I just got curious if he would let me hold him, and when he seemed to love being out and playing we instantly became friends lol even my wife loves him and she was terrified of them like me until we got him!

Ha no he will definitely be our one and only pet rat, they poop a lot and I would go crazy cleaning up after more than one lol

Well it's never too late to try and convert them over :) it's tough though! Im trying to get one that's been fed live to eat f/t but I think he's beginning to cave. It's a lot more convenient. I know if I fed live I'd end up having a pet rat colony.

You could always use it as an excuse to get more snakes...

"Honey, we have so many rats now I HAVE to get another BP...it's population control...you know how it is...."

I'm currently trying to do this with my parents lol

Ha I've tried a few times and I just end up frustrated because he doesn't show interest and I end up having to throw it away then think I could have bought live in the first place and I wouldn't have to buy another, well with the exception of Greg lol

Omg I got our rat almost the same way!! My Splinter was supposed to be food, he was only a weanling but still a lil too big for Lex at the time. She struck 3 times but never coiled... I took him out and went and got her a mouse nearby.
Rats really are cool pets, he's awesome!!

Yep, I think it's happened to a lot of us! I once ended up with this little gray rat, who we (my roommate & I) named "Felix." Then I felt sad that Felix didn't have a friend, so I adopted "Oscar" to keep him company... but our other roommate's dog got too curious, knocked the cage down, and killed poor little Felix. :(

I ended up giving Oscar to an old friend of mine, where he joined two other rats in a happy home... wonder if he's still alive? Hmmm. Oh yeah, and I also currently have two pet mice who were supposed to be feeders (long story) - but I'm not keen on keeping mice in my little apartment, so my next-door neighbor has offered to take them soon. One of the dangers of us bleeding hearts feeding live, I suppose!

P.S. Greg is adorable, and I love the name. :)

So this was a hilarious thread to read, now I'm scared of this happening to me! my bf told me I wasn't allowed to keep F/T in the freezer cuz they make it stink. I guess I'm not too worried I guess cuz knowing I could be evicted for keeping a rat scares me, is it easy to get them to eat live even if they eat f/t?

From what I hear it is no problem at all to switch from f/t to live!

When you have several snakes it's not so frustrating cuz a rat will never go wasted (If someone doesn't eat their rat, gets tossed to someone else).
Another excuse to get more snakes lol
