Who Likes Sushi?
I absolutely love it and will eat it at every opportunity. I've not met a Nigiri I didn't like. Rolls are hit and miss for me but I love Spicy Tuna Rolls. Actually, so far I love Spicy Anything Rolls. Not a fan of California Rolls. Cream cheese just seems odd to me. Not a fan of avocados either. Never had a hand roll. No one around here makes them.
I want to try making my own sushi but it seem I have to special order the sushi grade fish cuts and they are not cheap.
Are you a sushi fan too?
-
Meeee! Yes. Mmm. Favorite food.
-
I love sushi! My friends and I go to all you can eat sushi pretty often so I don't have sushi cravings too much :P But I am always down for a delicious roll as long as it has eel in it!! MMM EEL!!
-
Re: Who Likes Sushi?
I love cooked rolls. And cream cheese included rolls.
As for making your own, go to your local Asian market. They'll have great prices. And some things you'd never think you could find here in the states.

That sucks Wes. There are at least 4 places in town that make good sushi.
-
I tried it the other day and it about took everything I had not to throw it back up. I'm picky to what I eat though.

Tell me about it! And the town I moved from in NC had two of the best sushi places I had ever been to, only about 10 minutes from the house.

You just have to find the right place to make it for you. I bet I could find you a flash fried roll that you would like so much that you would stab anyone who tried to grab a piece with chop sticks :P
-
Re: Who Likes Sushi?
Now I can do raw cold rolls, but at first it was only eel rolls with eel sauce.

Gotta say, blech. But I dont even like cooked fish.

Who Likes Sushi?
I've tried spicy tuna rolls, i like them. I think i've tried california rolls too, i didn't like them as much. I've never been to a sushi place or anything though.
-
Who Likes Sushi?
Nope no nope no thanks LOL
-
I used to think it was gross. The first time I tried it was at a china buffet and it was gross. But I tried it at a real sushi place and it was completely different.
-
Re: Who Likes Sushi?
I love sushi. My favorite is salmon and tuna sashimi with lots of wasabi. Rolls are OK. I actually like the tuna/salmon + cream cheese rolls. Spicy tuna is good too. Handrolls are tasty. I like anything with raw salmon and tuna really...
I dislike sea urchin, squid, and cooked rolls. The texture of urchin is just bleh.
We have quite a few Japanese markets in NorCal, so getting sushi grade fish is pretty common. Taking a fish home and making your own sushi is really fun. You should try it sometime.
And when you eat sushi in Japan from a real sushi shop, its totally different from the US. The flavors are different. Its like comparing apples and oranges (its as different as a buffet vs real sushi shop type of thing). So I recommend to anyone to try some Japanese sushi if anyone goes over seas.(There is no such thing as California or cream cheese rolls there. That's just an American thing. )

Sushi is my absolute favorite food!!

Favorite food. Period. Of course has to be good (fresh) and not all Sushi is made equal.
-
I have never seen or heard of a cooked roll. Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of what sushi is?

They are just flash fried. Gives the outside a crunchy texture but the inside is still raw.

The cooked roll I get is marinated and grilled eel, so I guess it's technically not sushi at that point.

Who Likes Sushi?
I would eat it every night if I could.
There for a while I didn't even have to order when I sat down at the bar. :o
I also like my steak shown a photo of a flame then severed to me.

It's spicy mayo. Very easy to make. http://makemysushi.com/index.php/sus...ayonnaise.html
1 Tbsp Mayo
1 Tsp Sriracha Sauce
1 Tsp Lemon Juice (Optional)
Combine everything and mix well. Some people also put a little sesame oil in it. Refrigerate what you don't use.

I'm a regular at my local sushi place. You know you are eating way too much sushi when they start bringing you a box with your name on it with some bright red chops sticks:handshake:
-
Oh God I love sushi. When I lived at home and had an expendable income, I frequented certain places so much that the sushi chefs gave me a lot of freebies. Those were the good ol' days. I hardly ever go nowadays.
I'm pretty much content with everything in nigiri form. Especially some good fatty tuna. Like the kind that was cut off the belly of the tuna that was swimming in the pacific ocean the same day.
I think the only thing I don't like is raw jellyfish. The texture is weird and snappy.
-
Re: Who Likes Sushi?
Sushi is soooo good. haven't had it in forever and haven't had dinner yet either. mmmmm. I once hated fish let alone raw fish.
New York roll
Philadelphia roll
Veggie rolls(depending on the veggies and how they make them)
Cali roll
Volcano roll
spicy tuna roll
Sweet potato roll
I'm starting to branch out and eat rolls with eel and other "odd" ingredients in them. Like Campbell's it's mmm mmmmmm good.
-
Oooh, Jellyfish. I'm afraid the most exotic thing I've had are baby octopi (octopuses?), which were delicious. (and sad...babies...eating babies...) Is Jellyfish a common sushi ingredient? I've never been to a really good sushi shop proper, mainly because I'm surrounded by people who don't *do* sushi...
mmm...the cravings...they begin.
-
Re: Who Likes Sushi?
Omg...when i lived in Philly, there was a slammin sushi place called Terilyn. I looooved their dragon rolls and spicy tuna rolls. Havent been able to find sushi as good as theirs around here...:(

Re: Who Likes Sushi?
Just looked it up. Is it spelled Terryin?
I'll have to set myself a reminder to try the place and dragon rolls.
-
Re: Who Likes Sushi?

I honestly don't understand why anyone would ruin perfectly good tuna by cooking it. :)

Re: Who Likes Sushi?
I do...I do...
Ther is a place in Bethesda MD called Matuba's tha t has a rotary wheel/belt and if you get there early enough to sit next to it, you barely need to stretch you arm to pick up the plate. Expensive but well worth it.
Also, in Gaithersburg MD near NIST (www.nist.gov), there is Sushi Chalet. Not that expensive but it's all you can eat and they have a very large variety to choose from. My mom drives 1.5 hours from Gettysburg just to frequent the place. My wife hated sushi until we went there and now my 7 year old loves it.
The only thing wrong with sushi is my ability to eat less than I use to...
At the chalet, I had 4 packed plates about a year ago, now I would be lucky to get 2 packed plates down.
-
I have had the buffet stuff and the packaged type, but never been to a real sushi joint. I watched a documentary called "Jiro Dreams of Sushi", on Netflix about a week ago, and have really been wanting to try some quality sushi.

I used to think like that, and then I tried a salmon roll. It was all downhill from there.
-
Sushi is one of my top favorite foods hands down, I wish there was a sushi restaurant here that I love as much as the one in my old town :( The tuna, yellowtail, and saltwater eel rolls are my favorite but I won't turn down salmon nigiri either! I used to love california rolls but I don't dig the cream cheese with the fish anymore.
And not sushi but I die over gyoza and shumai too :lick:

Re: Who Likes Sushi?
I have to add my :twocents: and say that you all suck right now. :P This thread is making me so incredibly hungry and it's not even remotely fair that I didn't find it until after midnight when there's not a single place open that can satisfy this craving. I could eat sushi every single day and die a very happy man.
My top two sushi experiences caught on camera:
1) Our (my wife and I) favorite hole-in-the-wall sushi place back in Maricopa, AZ had the best sushi chef - before it changed ownership and pissed us off by turning into a buffet. He would go out of his way to impress us with something fun every time we went there. This is one of his caterpillar rolls:
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...pillarRoll.jpg
2) The other is from our anniversary a couple of years ago (different place - this one's in Richmond, TX). I just remember the look on the waitress's face when we ordered. This is the main course that arrived after our miso soup and house salad - IT WAS AWESOME AND WE FINISHED EVERY LAST BITE! :D

Ooooo is that the "Sushi Boat" I've seen on menus but can't afford?
-
Re: Who Likes Sushi?
Hmm I somehow missed this thread. I'm obsessed with sushi, one of my top favorite foods by far. I love raw salmon the best, so buttery and delicious. We found frozen sashimi grade tuna at Sprouts once and made our own rolls, they turned out wonderfully, I put masago on mine mmmm. I've thought about ordering sashimi grade salmon online but it's a bit pricey. If I could I would eat sushi/ sashimi everyday.
-
Re: Who Likes Sushi?
Sushi is BY FAR my #1 favorite food!!!
None of those nasty cooked rolls, most cold rolls are good aslong as I can get rid of the avocado and cream cheese(Rainbow Rolls mmmm.
Nigiri or Sashimi are where it is really at though!
Octopus Nigiri is one of my favorites along with Salmon and Tuna.
And alittle bit of Roe every now and then is good for the body!
I think every time we go I have to find something new on the menu to try.
Had Sea Urchin last time and was rather disappointed. I want the Sea Urchin with just the top cut off and a spoon, not some yellow paste in a piece of seaweed.

You must be talking about Say Sushi here in Copa!!!!
They are actually under new management again and back to being an actual Sushi restaurant!
And I don't know if the old Sushi Chef came back or something but we always sit at the bar and have a certain chef who will make me all kinds of amazing different things!
Well I think I know what me and the wife are having for dinner tonight!!!

Oh god. Why did I go back in this thread and see a post from maryland? I want conveyor belt sushi!!!!!!!

Re: Who Likes Sushi?
I've recently discovered conveyor belt sushi and am hooked. Were it not a good 40 minutes away from me I'd probably eat there a minimum of once a week considering how cheap it is. SUCH a cool idea.

Do you mean when you sit at a round bar and the sushi on a belt goes around and you just pluck it off? It's better with the little boats and the tiny tiver installation going round and round. It is easy to spend wayy too much on sushi when it's just floating towards you wispering "hey phsst eat me pls" Really. And the little plates they come on are color coded depending on the price.
