Poor Shadow :(
I went on a solo camping trip Tuesday with my little family dog Shadow. I was supposed to come back Friday. We had a really nice hike-in site and were having an awesome time. Last night around 8:30-9, I took him on a walk to the main campground just to scope things out. As we were walking past someones site, their dog sprinted out at us and attacked my little 11 year old lhasa apso/poodle. I tried to block its path but it pushed past me and had him by the neck.. It took 3 grown men and dog training spray to get it to release him. That stupid dog ripped its rope in half going after Shadow... Yet the owners say that it was a completely new behaviour, which I think is bull seeing as they had the spray and dogs don't all of a sudden become prey reactive. Anyways, after calling the police (since the park warden wasn't there), I had to quickly pack up my tent and drive 1.5 hours to the nearest animal hospital. On the way, I of course had the joy of hitting a deer and not only killing it and flinging the dog into the glove compartment, I also ruined one of my lights and dented my hood. By 2:30am Shadow was prepped for surgery and my poor little angel was under general anesthesia for an hour. I'm so shaken up right now, it was the crappiest night ever. I swear the world was just smiting me for having too much fun this summer.
Since I know some of you guys will be interested, here are pics the vet took of the wound (**graphic**)

They had to remove that middle flap of flesh because it had already started to go black and was no longer viable.

Showing how deep it was.
Chicks dig scars, right?

All drugged up on the way home.
They said that the laceration is just the tip of the iceberg, and that the skin is pulled away from the muscle and it's like a big cavern everywhere where his skin is dyed yellow from the iodine... I feel so bad for him :'( I've been calling him Drippy since he's got fluids dripping from a drain :P
I just wanted to vent to you guys-- I feel all loopy after the last 14 hours.

Re: Poor Shadow :(
No offense, just me, I would have killed that other dog. There would have been nothing to stop me. If any dog grabs Kyriss like that and I'm there, it wouldn't take three grown men and spray. It would take me and my knife.
Sorry to hear that, hope those guys are held responsible.

I always thought I would do the same things.. but it took me so off guard that I didn't even know what was going on. One second I was thinking about whether I still had time to do a bit of fishing, next second was a bloodbath.

Re: Poor Shadow :(
Sorry about your dog. At least Shadow is alive and will make a full recovery. Sit back and take a deep breath for a few seconds.
(hugs) :)

Re: Poor Shadow :(
Oh your poor baby! He's gonna be ok though? Boy that's terrible. I'm sorry. *hugs*
-
I feel so bad for you and shadow. I've got a small dog too and have several other friends with small dogs and it's strange how many of them have been attacked by big dogs, and the other dog owner ALWAYS says 'He's never done that before'
-
Re: Poor Shadow :(
So sorry that this happened to you and your little guy. I was once at a state park with my beagle/boxer mix dog taking her for a walk. My dog was leashed as the rules stated and would you believe that a little dog attacked my medium sized dog? My girl was attacked by a dachshund. That little beast came charging after my dog and put a nice puncture in my girl's ear. I was so pissed! The dude that had the dachshund was very apologetic and offered to pay for the damages that his dog caused. Guess I should consider myself lucky that the dude paid up.
-
Omg, your poor baby! At least he's (for lack of better words) okay.
When I'm out on walks, I always have a knife with me. Everyone who knows me knows that I'm a huge animal lover. I'm about to go to school to be a vet tech. But I have a Pomeranian, and if a large dog got a hold of him before I had the chance to swoop him off of the ground, he could be dead in seconds, if not faster. If I have to choose between my dog's life and the other dog's, you better believe I'm going to kill the other dog without a second thought.
And there is no way that other dog didn't show signs before it went after your dog. Hopefully you got the other owner's information to not only report what happened, but to (at the very least) get them to pay the vet bills.
I will admit, he looks awfully smug, all drugged up in that last photo, haha.

I'm so sorry. Hoping for a fast recovery.
I would be so so pissed about it, I hope they get what they deserve.

x2. I wouldn't think twice about it, or feel bad. They should have had their dog on a chain, not a rope, if it had displayed that kind of behaviour before. Which, obviously it did if they had that spray. I love dogs, but i love mine more, so if you can't control yours then thats not my problem lol.
I hope its a speedy recovery liv. Glad everything's stable now. Keep us updated! :gj:
-
Liv, I am soooo sorry to hear you had to go through all of that nonsense... your dog being the worst of it, and then the deer? WTF?! You are a trooper my dear, I'd be in worse shape (probably in jail).
-
Re: Poor Shadow :(
Hopefully shadow will make a speedy recovery, I also hope that the owners of the other dog will pay for any cost the may occur.
A dog can be unpredictable however a good responsible owner should be in control of their dog, obviously they were not. :(

Thanks guys
Shadow's throwing up and generally looks like he feels like crap, but I hope he'll start to perk up after his next round of painkillers/antibiotics. He's too cute to be this ugly!!!
I know you guys would have killed that other dog, but as much as I'm mad at it, it reminds me of my foster dog... she was prey reactive and would have done the same thing if a little porker walked in her line of sight. I'm pissed at the owners, because while we both had crazy dogs, I'd never bring my crazy dog to a park. Besides, if I had actually allowed myself to get as upset as I felt, I don't think I'd have been in any state to get everything done that needed to be done. I think I'm going to bring that dog spray with me in my car/camping bag from now on though, seems like it could come in handy :gj:
I'll post updates on Shadow as he heals in here :) He gets the drain out in 5 days and the stitches out in 2 weeks!
-
Poor Shadow :(
pepper spray works too lmao
-
That's illegal here I think :P
-
Re: Poor Shadow :(
Hopefully your pup will heal up without any problems. I'd be going after the owners of the other dog for the vet bills.
-
Poor Shadow :(
At least Shadow is okay! It could have been a LOT worse! Keep us updated.
Also, if you were to kill the other dog, would you get in trouble with the police? I'm curious now. When I take my dog for a walk I bring a big stick just in case, and I don't think I'd have an issue beating a dog to death if it tried to attack/kill mine

I think you definitely could, since it isn't technically self defense (dogs are property in the eyes of the law).

Ya I will be. I basically spent tuition for next year :(

Re: Poor Shadow :(
Glad Shadow made it and will be okay. I'm not a fan of small dogs but he's pretty cute.
I'm another who would have killed the other dog. But it's probably good that you didn't since they would likely be less likely to reimburse you for vet bills had you killed their dog lol. You got their information, right?
-
If pepper spray is illegal, do you know if you could have something like bear spray? It's like pepper spray for bears (strong stuff!). I think something like that would be legal, since it's for use against animals and not people. I could be wrong though, so you'd have to check your local laws.

Re: Poor Shadow :(
Shadow ran to my bed right when we got home and hasn't moved it yet, so I've just been sitting here with him for the last 24 hours. I just brought out Tiffany to keep my company and she beelined to him. She flicked him with her tongue and it was the first time he's lifted his head all day :) He loves the snakes and screw science, they love him back:love:

I have an unfortunate update on Shadow :(
My mum just sent me this text: "At vets. They have taken him for a bit. He has a fever and is infected. The hole is there because the skin is not viable, it is necrotic and so the stitches in that area failed. He is muzzled and they are bathing the wound to see how much tissue is dead. He may need another surgery and I don't know if Shadow can do that."
So in the end vet said no way, he won't survive surgery. He just doesn't have enough skin to cut out that tissue and reclose it. Wednesday morning he goes back... if the infection is just on top, they'll perform surgery then because there is still a chance. If it's deeper, then there isn't anything they can do for it because so much tissue was already removed and he'll have to be put down......... :tears: He was the dog that saved my life when I was younger by waking up my parents when I had seizures from low blood sugar and used to wake me up if my sugar was going low, I can't lose him :(
I'm 3 hours away from my poor pup for work until Friday... I wish I could go home :'( :'( :'(

Oh no! I'll pray for the little guy.

Poor thing, do you know what the police did about the other dog? I know that isn't important right now.
My thoughts are with Shadow.

I called the OPP (provincial police) when it happened, and they were really really mean to me :( The woman even had the nerve to tell me that the other dog was friendly and she didn't think it was a problem at all.................... as I held my chewed up dog and my hands and arms were dripping in his blood. All they would do for me is get me the guys information (which they didn't bother to write legibly). After she handed me the piece of paper, I asked if that was all they were going to do and she said in the nastiest voice "WHAT would you have US do?". I said "I have no idea. I'm not the police officer, it's your job to know what to do." And then they left in a huff. So long story short, they cuddled the other dog.

Thanks for all the support guys.. As I'm sure you can all understand, I love my animals a lot. I'm beyond devastated that he's gotten worse right when I thought he was starting to get better and I could forget about how horrific it all was. :(
-
Re: Poor Shadow :(
I'm definitely here for you liv. I hope he pulls through, he's a fighter thus far.

You could try calling the police and filing a complaint against the officer. Also you could get in touch with the campground and see if you can get the name of the people who were in that spot.

That is the biggest bunch of crap.:mad:

Poor Shadow :(
This thread is sad. I hope shadow pulls through. He such a cutie pie :). As for the police. That is plan unprofessional in my opinion. They aren't allow to judge and declare guilt or no guilt. I'd file a complaint on the officers too. Depending on the department and the area. Complaints usually are heard and taken pretty serious. Good luck to both of you

There was one family that helped me through it and were really nice (since I was there alone), and the man was a recently retired OPP sergeant (or something like that). He was so mad at how they treated me, he said he would make a complaint for me
