Male or Female Clown?
Should i get a male or female clown for my second BP? i'm looking to purchase a reduced pattern one. I also have an Albino Female (180g) if that helps any. Some people are telling me to get a female clown, but others telling me to get a male and buy lesser-pastel females etc. If it's not necessary to get a female i won't get it due to my budget restrictions since females are usually about $500+ more than males
Future Projects in order:
1. Lesser Pastel Clown
2. Killer/Pastel Clown
3. King Clown
4. Enchi Clown
5. Albino Clown

Male or Female Clown?
I would get a male clown and breed it to your albino to work towards albino clowns.

Albino clowns are probably the last on my priority list. Lesser Pastel Clown and Killer Clowns are what i'm looking to produce first
-
Male or Female Clown?
Then get a lesser het clown and a pastel het clown. Or a clown and a lesser pastel het clown. Or a pastel clown and a lesser het clown. Depends on what you're budget is and how patient you are lol
-
Females are recommended for people with a small collection because they mature slower. A male dosen't really make a difference. Remember clowns are reccesive, so you'll need another clown or het clown female if you want to produce them.
-
if you have the funds, getting a female clown would be HUGE in your future plans.
why? because a male any gene 100% clown is so much easier to get(availability and price) than
a female any gene 100% het clown, people tend to hold to them forever.
then once your girls are up to size, get a multi gene male 100% het clown and plug him in.
you should get at least 50% clowns from the clown female. either sell them to fund future projects or ...
but keep one good male clown to breed, he'll be ready so much quicker than any of his sisters
and go from there.
what I would do if I had the funds...

Well the problem is female clown is gonna cost me $1200-1500 and a male clown gonna cost me $750-1000. I plan to purchase a pastel-lesser het clown or just a pastel lessser and breed it to produce that depending how everything goes. Unless I change my mind and try to produce killer clowns first. Which would you recommend? Male or Female?
-
Female. Male are ready in a year (or less, sometimes) while females take 2-3 years at least. And then when she's ready you can buy the boy. At that point the male you want is going to drop in price as the market gets a bit more saturated, so you can get 'more snake' for that $750-$1000.

Female lesser het clowns cost about the same as a female clown. Pastels het clown aren't too expensive either. The difference between the 2 is that the super pastel clown is HAWT. The super lesser clown will be an all white snake lol.... So you wouldn't even know if clown is present....
I'd get a pastel het clown FEMALE, and allow the price of the lesser het clown male to drop so you can get one! Who knows, you may save enough money to buy a PASTEL lesser het clown boy :gj:. That way you can make even more goodies :D

pastel lesser clown is the one in the picture above! my dream snake! pastel lesser het clowns are like 3k right now. pastel lessers aren't too expensive at all. if you were me, would you get a female or a male? after all the responses, seems like the general consensus is female
-
Female all the way. Get a couple if you can. I went the het route and hope to produce some clowns this year. Bought the female hets 3 years ago long wait.

Re: Male or Female Clown?
If you want to really produce a lot of clowns, as with all recessives, the way is to get a male visible and some female 100% hets.
And i add, a recessive project is not really a recessive project unless you have a visible, homozygous recessive in your collection.
I voted for a male clown, but of course this all depends on circumstances. Normally a male visible and female 100% hets are the easiest and best way to get a recessive project going.
To add dominant/codominant morphs, just breed a visible clown to whatever, and use the 100% het clown + whatever to move that whatever into visible clowns.

so you're saying getting a male clown would be better? alot of people seem to be saying forking over the extra bucks for female will save me alot of time. also pastel-lesser het clown might be more expensive as female?

what will be easier and cheaper? To get 3 visible female clowns and a 100% het clown male, or to get a visible male and 3 females that are 100% het clown? In both cases, if they breed, the eggs will be the same. No difference. But you see, the investment on the male is tripled if you can breed it to 3 females. Genetically it makes no difference, but practically and economically it does.
If you can get a female clown at a reasonable price, i dont want to discourage you, get it if it appeals to you. Also it rises your odds to make clowns if you really manage to get nice female clowns. Breeding clown to clown for a clutch of 100% clowns is always awesome.
But for now, i say, you are asking female clown versus male clown, and if the male clown is cheaper or the same price.... get the male clown and then female 100% hets.

For starting out in a recessive project I am a fan of having het females and getting a visual male when the girls are up to size. This gives you the most bang for the buck on your visual by being able to put him to more than one het female AND it eliminates possible het offspring. I am not a fan at all of possible hets. Hard to sell, and time consuming to prove out.
So I suggest getting one or two whatever morph het females (Lesser, Pastel, etc...) and a couple of normal het females, raising them then in 2 years buy a visual Pastel Clown male (the price will have dropped some by then).
You could also get the visual male earlier and start creating you own hets while you other het girls are getting up to size.
Not as exciting in the short term, but will pay off big in the long term.

what i said, just more elaborate. And yes thats one thing i forgot... Buy females first, males later, because sexual maturity requires much more time in females. But then, a few years of delay are not of much concern when they get 20+ years old and reproduce nicely in their first 7-10 years.

seems like getting a female would speed up the process, no? ill keep it for at least 3-5 years til breeding, then she'll be good size. then all i have to do is either get a pastel-lesser or pastel-lesser het clown (depends on $$) and breed it to her quick since males are quicker to get to breeding size. or am i wrong?

If you are determined to get a visual female, then yes that will work fine. You will just limit yourself in the long term as far as overall odds.

what do you mean by limit? basically this is my plan for either male or female. i'll get it in a few months and not breed until 3-5 years in the future. basically is a male or female going to get me a lesser pastel clown or killer clown faster and more efficiently? watever is more worth getting overall for these projects is the one i'm going to get.

ok i get it now lol. if i get a female i can only breed once a year, but if i get a male, i can breed it to multiple 'het clowns' a year, giving me even more chances to acheive my goal or other morphs. the only downfall of this is that it takes a while for these het clown females to grow, but will pay off in the long run
-
only problem is that a female 'het clown' like lesser-pastel or pastel is gonna be hard to find or extremely expensive

Once hatchlings hit this season, there will be quite a few available.

Male or Female Clown?
This is just my $.02 and take it or leave it Honestly I really think you should wait before getting anything. You have said before that you are still in hs and that you plan on going to college. 99.9% of colleges don't allow any types of animals soooo where do you plan on keeping them? If you hide them in your dorm you run the risk of being found out and then what? Unless you have super understanding parents I doubt they will want to take care of them if you decide to leave them at home. You say you want to breed all these recessive things which is awesome because recessives are really great but I know for sure you will have plenty of trouble selling off het babies at your age. I wouldn't even trust buying off someone my age. You have NO reputation so its going to be hard. Plus with all those females you are talking about possibly getting what do you plan on doing with all the offspring? Do you know how you are going to feed and pay for a bunch of babies? How you are going to house them as they grow, or what you plan on doing with them when you can't sell them? These are things that need to be addressed with lengthy thought.
I was your age once and was all gung ho like you about breeding and buying loads of snakes until someone asked me those questions and I didn't have an answer for them. He gave me advice to wait like I'm telling you and honestly it was the best decision I ever made. Heck I'm still waiting and most likely still won't have any bps for another 2 years or more.
Like I said you can either take the good advice I'm giving you or ignore it I honestly don't care either way. But I figured I'd touch the bases that I'm sure quite a few people on here have been biting their tongues about.
I'm just bold enough to say it.
Good day.

Male or Female Clown?
If I was you I'd listen to Kevin but I've also had life kick me in the gut once I left my parents home and realized how "nice and friendly" the real world can be. Your plans are awesome ones ill give you that and your desire is there but do you have all your bases covered? Some times the best bet is to just enjoy growing up a little but I'm just a name on the Internet no one can force you to do anything.
-
Maybe not for the OP, but male clowns bred to normals and morph females will make WAY more money than a female clown that makes one clutch a year.
But like others said, you might want a little reputation before trying to sell hets of any kind.
Would I love a female clown? Sure, I could have bought 4-5 of them from what the single male has made in the last 3 seasons, if that was my choosing :)

Good day.
first of all i'm going to be living in an apartment or duplex for college.. not a dorm. and i did say that i'm waiting 3-5 years until i even consider breeding... which is when ill be out of college. my initial plan was to get a female clown to raise up, so i can have one ready to breed whenever needed... but now some people in this thread are suggesting male, but i have no idea which one to pick. i might be leaning towards a male though due to SnakesRKewl's post^
-
What SnakesRKewl is saying (I believe) is that your VISUAL Clown should be a male.
You still need to have and raise up the hets for him to breed (thus getting them first).

I didn't have any het females when I started.
What I'm saying is that when bred to normals and morph females you can make way more money than raising a single female clown and then breeding her.
Do I wish I had female clowns, of course, and this year I should be making my own finally after 3 seasons of using the male clown.
He's way more than made up for not having any hets or clown females in the hold backs he's produced and the profit potential.= moving forward
My first season with the male clown I produced 1.4 yellowbelly het clowns and a ton of hets.
I then produced a bunch of hets last season from bumblebee, pewter and yellowbelly females again.
This season I'm breeding clown X yellowbelly het clown and yellowbelly het clown to several het clowns and clown to several other morphs and normals for more hets and morph hets.
I have been patiently building my stock of het clowns and morph het clowns and now have a lot more in my arsenal than a clown female would ever have given me.
I don't think you can go wrong either way, but imo a male makes far more sense especially if you have nice sized adult females to breed him to.

And if you DON'T have a bunch of females to breed that clown to, maybe getting a female, and raising her up while you continue to go to school will give you enough time to have a nice big healthy clown to pair with one of Jerry's het clown male combo morphs :gj:.

Re: Male or Female Clown?
For recessive genes I always get females since they take longer to sexually mature, then all I have to do is hold back one of their offspring. It saves alot of time having mature recessive females. Just a thought.
