Questions! :)
I've been doing some research on Red Tail Boas and think there amazing!! :) I just had some random questions about them haha. What type of Boa do you have? (BCI, BCC, morph?) Male, Female? Size? Pic? :) If I get one it will be in August so I have some wiggle room for doing research. I was thinking about getting an Animal Plastics T-10 since its a bit taller than the T-8 (sound ok?) When I go to the next expo I'm going to look at the male sunglow prices because those are my favorite and males tend to be on the smaller side compared to the females. Thanks in advance everybody!!! :D

i have my bcc in a t10 right now. I would recomend going with a bci. i thought i could hop to a bcc from my dums and he is super super touchy. from what i have heard and read. bci are less sensitive than bcc. also look into a dums. they are awsome as well. the t10 should be fine for a male. i do not plan on keeping mine in the t10 its whole life. i will be ordering some 8 foot tanks when i get a house later this year.

Yeah I've also read they were BCCs' were more advance. I was planning on BCI anyway lol :) Thanks for the feedback btw!

A male BCI is the way to go (and Dumerils are terrific too - very underrated!). A T10 will be perfect for a male BCI for the rest of its life, so that is a good choice. I think the T8 is a little too short for a fully grown boa. But if you start with a baby, you'll want to start him out in something smaller for at least a little while. A 32 qt tub is good for a baby, you can move up to a 41 qt at about 1 yr of age. At 1 1/2 - 2 yrs old, he'll be ok in the T10. :gj:
I have both BCI and BCO (Argentine). My BCI are wonderful snakes!! They are all very docile and make great pets. My Peaches loves to just hang out with me and will sit on my lap or on my shoulders for hours at a time. Jasper is more active and has to explore everywhere. Pandora is a little more shy, but extremely sweet. My Argentines are different. They are great with me, but more skittish with strangers. And they can have attitude and will huff and puff and want to blow the house down, but they've never actually struck at me. My female, Roslyn, does a marvelous impersonation of a king cobra though...... :P
Here are a few pictures, although these were all taken when they were babies. I need to update some pictures.....
First up are my BCIs, Peaches, Jasper, and Pandora

Re: Questions! :)
Wow their beautiful!!!! I love Pandoras coloring and pattern!! :) I was thinking a male BCI would be perfect because their a bit smaller than females. How big are your boas atm? I'm only allowed to get one snake (maybe 2 if I can convince my parents ;)) so I wanted something with a nice size and a little more on the active side. I was looking into Ball Pythons but RTBs' took the cake :)

Yea, if you can only get one, I'd go with a boa too. And a male is perfect - they are a little more managable than the females, but you'll still have a nicely sized and impressive snake. :gj:
Pandora is a coral sunglow arabesque. She is pretty unusual and we are hoping to prove her super hypo and super arabesque. Since she is nearly patternless, and both parents were arabesque, this may be an opportunity to prove the arabesque gene as co-dominant. We'll see!
My males are nearly at their adult size now. Mojo is pushing 6ft. Peaches, a female, is nearly there too, but she's still got some growing to do before she would be considered up to breeding size. Pandora and Suki are still babies. Pandora was born in the fall and is only about 180 grams!! I love working with the larger boas. They are a lot of fun and very curious snakes. Be aware though that putting them BACK in their enclosure can be a real challenge!! They do NOT like to go back in - it's a boa thing. But the AP cages are good because they open at the front - it's easier to stick them in through the front then down from the top. :D
One tip: I would recommend that you get your boa as a youngster. Not a newborn, but still a baby - one that's several months old and eating well (ask the breeder - make sure it's eaten at least a dozen times). If you get a baby, you can grow with him. And it's very satisfying to raise a baby up to an adult. ;)

i have to agree with you on this one. my dums i got when she was 130ish g and was a pain to get eatting. now she eats what ever is in the tank and growing quickly now at close to 340g. altho she and my bcc never gave me a hard time to put in the tank. they go in freely right now. she is starting to get more curious and explore her tank alot more at night as soon as the lights go out. my bcc is still new to me and he just hides most the time. But boas are very fun snakes.

Questions! :)
Boas are amazing!
I got my BCI a few months ago and he is so different from my balls! He loves to come out and he loves to climb. Currently he's in a boaphile, but he'll be upgraded to a massive 6'x4'x3' cage with lots of climbing space.

Re: Questions! :)
Great topic. I'm asking some of these questions and have a caging post going. I'm very glad to hear boas are much more active (in general) than the Royals. I like my son's snake, but the food refusal and hiding 24/7 sort of took the fascination of watching snakes away because I never see her. Now that she is not feeding, I only see her when we handle her. I love to take her out, but seeing them in their enclosure even if it's just lying motionless is so much more exciting to me.
Male Colombian BCI sounds perfect for both of us.
Lots of good help here!!

Thanks for the help everyone!! Evenstar your boas are so cool!! I plan on getting a well started baby in August when we go to the Daytona National Breeders Expo :D So excited!! Now time to narrow what type of morph I want..... lol! I actually got my bearded dragon when she was 6 inches long and considered the "runt" and now shes pushing 17 inches!!! Its so fun to see your little baby's growing up! Bobbafett... WOW. That enclosure looks absolutely stunning!:gj: and your BCI is adorable lol :P Since you have both ball pythons and boas which do you prefer if you could only have one snake?

Thank you!
I would pick boas hands down. My BPs are nice snakes, but my boas are so much more interactive and they never have a problem feeding nor do they stress if I choose to handle them - in fact, they love to come out and play, then gobble up dinner that night! :D

Re: Questions! :)
Yayy :P I'm going to hopefully get a boa then :D Now time to look at some morphs! Do you know what the BCI jungle morph is?
-
Questions! :)
I love my bps a lot and most of mine are fairly active when out of their cage, but I LOVE my boa.
He never misses a meal, and even when he's hiding, he is still halfway out of his hide.
He's just such a joy !

yes lol. evenstar will give you a better answer. i'm still learning but the jungle gene gives aberrancies in pattern and a creamy pale color. Good examples are very nice imo however there are quite a few that I wouldn't recognize as a jungle. so just be careful who or where you get one from. incase you ever decide to breed this might help. or even just help learn your morphs.

H.o.F.R. you did a great job describing the jungle!! ;)
http://www.blumenboas.com/boamorphs.htm This site shows some good pictures of some well-known morphs. Mid-way down there is a good picture of a high quality jungle. But HoFR is right - not all jungles are easy to spot. Some are very low expression and look a lot like normals to someone who is not experienced with that morph. And a lot of high expressions aren't available, or if they are, they are quite expensive. :gj:
A few "affordable" morphs that are generally easy to find are albinos, hypos, anerys, pastels, and low-expression jungles.
Midrange morphs that are still pretty easy to come by and not too outrageously priced are sunglows, arabesques, and motleys.
Higher priced morphs that are also harder to find are snows, moonglows, bloods, leopards, and high-expression jungles.

Thanks guys!! :D I think jungles are pretty neat looking because I love the reds in a BCI tail :)
-
When I do get the AP cage should I include a shelf?
-
Questions! :)
If you'd like to, go for it. If given the space, boas love to climb!

Wow that rocks!! :) I think ill do it, and the next reptile expo I go to ill buy a nice branch too :D Thanks Bobbafett
-
Yes, boas do climb if given the chance. And any extra space will be used. Buy the largest cage you can afford and have the space for, get the shelf to go with it, stick a couple strudy branches in there too, and you'll be all set! :gj:

I have a female BCI who is almost 3 years old. She is in a Boaphile 421d. Last time I weighed/measured her she was around 7 lbs and 5+ feet, but that was a few months ago. For the most part, she is very tame, but I don't even try to hold her at night because she goes into food mode and waits by the cage door.
This is her a few days ago.

Thx! :) She has a nice pattern
