Tubs instead of terrariums?

I have been seeing a lot of posts about using tubs instead of glass terrariums for BPs. Could you guys provide me with a few links and any advice which one is best? I might switch over if it really is that beneficial.

Tubs are usually used because they are easier to maintain temperatures and humidity compared to an aquarium.

If you can't keep the tub in an area with an ambient of 80, itd be better not to do the switch.

If you want a display like cage, look into PVC enclosures. They maintain heat and humidity like a dream.

Very nice setup!

Most of us who use tubs use them in a rack setup. I have used free standing tubs for a few snakes here and there, but I prefer them in a rack. They hold humidity great, they are easy to clean because they are lightweight, and the snakes seem to eat better in them. Plus, ball pythons like to hide.. so keeping them in a display enclosure is kind of useless in my opinion, simply because you will never really see the snake! lol

I use sterilite tubs from walmart. They do the job just fine for me, and they're cheap (especially when compared to tanks..)

There are 1000 threads here discussing this topic. Most of them spin out of control. The search feature is your friend. I'll summarize those threads for you because I like snow and it's very snowy outside today.


Tubs are easier to maintain the proper conditions in. That does not make them better than aquariums, it makes them easier. Snakes that feel concealed are secure, and therefore lower stress. Again, that doesn't make tubs better, it just means there is less clutter you have to wash when you clean the cage because you can run more minimalistic.

Bobbafett, what's the make of that enclosure? I am looking into them, but for the most part I can only find the stackable ones (rack set-up) in the smaller sizes that a ball would feel comfortable in.

The most important is that you meet your BP's need, and that your BP is healthy and eating .....the rest is a matter of personal preference.

As far as tubs go you will find anything from stand alone tubs to homemade racks to professionally manufactured rack. (depends on how many animals you have, your budget and how you value your time)

Those are a few of my racks , I favor expended PVC racks which are sturdy but also light weight.

Mine is a 3'x2'x18" PVC enclosure from Greg West. I live in Canada though, so I'd suggest getting a cage from the US.

I live only a couple hours from you in Lethbridge.

I use both. I find the tubs are way easier to maintain and keeping the humidity up and whatnot. I have my babies in tubs because they seem to shed almost once a month pretty much, by adults in terrariums because theyre gorgeous and I like having them more on display. Eventually I will probably end up switching all of them over to tubs just because its so much easier and I'm sort of tired of finding bits of bedding everywhere in my house.
If you only have one or a few snakes and you like to watch them and stuff I say Terrarium. but if youre planning on getting more, dont have a lot of time to spend making sure everything is perfect with temps and stuff then i vote tubs. Really its up to you and what better suits your future BP needs.
