Any vets or educated cat people?

Here is a pic of my cat. Going to the vet tommorow. He is 7 years old and we are thinking it is an infection of tumor. If it is a tumor, I am prepared to have to put home down. He has been my buddy since I was a wittle boy. Can anyone shed some lift on what it could be before the vet does?

Is he allowed outside? When did you notice this? It looks like something like a scrape got infected. more background info please!

When you move it, does it feel attached or does it feel more like it's in the skin?

Could be a number of things. Does he go outside? Any other cats he could have got into a fight with?

My guess would be a scratch or bite that got infected and that swelling is probably puss.

Yea he is an outside cat. It has gotten worse over the weekend but was on vacation when it happened and the fluffy animal sitter said he was never seen...

If he could get into something that cut him an got infected I'd think infection from that first. But has he had a lump forming their for a while? I hope you figure it out and he's ok!

Couldn't have been developing more than a week

In that area it might be hard to tell, the swelling wouldn't make it easier. I'm going with everyone and say it's an infection. A puncture wound needs to heal from the inside out. If he got bit and it scabed over it will just fill with puss.
He could have got bit, bug bite, bee sting, scratched or even scratched himself.
I'm hoping it's something that simple and they will just have to drain it and give him antibiotics.

I've seen tumours before... doesn't really look like that to me and since he's an outdoors cat, I would think that it's an infected injury like people have already been suggesting. Is there any puss (white, yellow, green)? If there's puss, than I'd definitely say it's infected.

This is why my cat is an indoors only... well, that and the fact that she's too chicken to go outside anyways but I hope this turns out to be minor, good luck!

Looks like a typical abscess to me. Vet will drain it, maybe put in a drain to keep it open and put her on antibiotics.

And inside cats can get them too. They're common on any cat that has contact with other cats, because of how they swat each other on the face, and the dirty claws puncture fairly deep with a tiny wound. So the hole closes and the infection festers.

It could also be an infected tooth(abscessed tooth). Or none of the above and something entirely different. But my guess is it's just an abscess and she'll do fine with a vet visit.

x2. both mom and dad are vets. worked at moms vet clinic from the time i was 14 until i was 22. if it appeared in less than a week i seriously doubt it's a tumor. the vet will just drain it and put it on antibiotics. saw this kind of stuff all the time with outside cats. scratches and bites from other cats will cause an abscess quicker than anything. nasty stuff. no need to be put down though. lol

Could very easily be an abscess (infection). Cats tend to be prone to abscesses (especially outdoor cats), and they can come up out of seemingly no where very quickly.

At our clinic (I'm a vet tech), first thought with something like that would be an infected or abscessed tooth. The infection can sometimes burst through the cheek like that.

Hopefully it's just an abscess, whether it's from a tooth or just a scratch.

Well our other cat has a uri and the one with the infection was no where to be found in the house this morning so both are headed to the vet tomorrow... These cats are gonna be hard on the wallet

Okay one cat has an upper respiratory infection and we have antibiotics for all 3 of my kitties. The cat with the infection on the face was an infection. (Vet predicts from a fight) and we have a desperate enteral antibiotic for him. It's all good!
