Homemade Mite redemies?

Just wondering if there are any homemade Mite redemies out there? and hopefully I posted this in the right spot

Yes a few drops of soap in water and a 20 min soak. The enclosure must be completely cleaned during the soak. It is also a good idea to isolate the enclosure with something like dri die or diatomaceous earth so mites cannot return to it. This needs to be done everyday for at least 3 weeks it works quite well with no noxious chemicals.

buy some permethrin and a chemically resistant spray bottle. Mix the permethrin for like .5% which I think is a capful and spray the snake avoiding the head and the enclosure. let the stuff dry out on the enclosure and do not clean it off as it will kill the mites that hatch. You should also bake anything wooden and bleach anything else. Freezing also kills every life cycle on mites if you have a large freezer.

This is a worry some notion. Permethrin is very toxic at less than 1% higher concentrations should be avoided unless you have access to proper facilities. NEVER forget that it is highly toxic to reptiles and other cold blooded animals it should be used and treated with the caution it deserves. Remember Permethrin was used to control the brown snake.

NIX and Provent a Mite main ingredients are permethrin, I've used it and many others have on their snakes without any problems.

As per the directions on provent it should never be applied directly to the snake. The enclosure should be sprayed and given a chance to dry thoroughly. In its liquid state the active ingredient is toxic.

The aerosol version is really bad for your snake, but if you mix it yourself into a spray bottle you can spray the snake down avoiding the head and it will be fine. Many people do this, yes I will admit it probably isn't the safest way to go but it's the most effective at eliminating mites.

Back to the original question.

100 years ago I picked up a snake that had mites and the only option I had at that time was to put mineral oil all over the snake. The mineral oil killed the mites and was completely gone with the next shed. The enclosure was cleaned with bleach and hot water. It only took one treatment to elimiate them completely.

When was the last time you bought permethrin? This is a crazy idea, I can't believe you are endorsing someone fooling around with mixing it on their own. People are well known for poisoning snakes and cats with this stuff at 0.1% and here someone is recommending MIXING it down from stronger!

LIKE 0.5%???? LIKE !!!! there is no like, in dealing with toxins it is exact or leave it the heck alone. No like! Not that you could buy it off the shelf as even in the US that is restricted.

Permethrin is classed as a WHIMIS D1B and D2B material (D1B Toxic material that causes serious and immediate effects-Toxic D2B Materials causing other toxic effects-Toxic)

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DILUTE PERMETHRIN IF YOU DO IT WRONGLY YOU WILL KILL YOU PET AND POISON YOUR SELF !!!!


I cannot believe that anyone would suggest this as ok.

Freezing is not an effective way to eradicate mites. It may kill the adults and nymphs, but the eggs can go dormant. The eggs can go dormant for months until proper conditions arise and they will hatch when the temps come back up. Thus starting the cycle again.

I put the enclosure outside yesterday for about 5 hours as it was -20 and cleaned it so whats the best option now for soaking my snake?

Warm water and a bit of soap, dawn or ivory seem to be the best options just avoid scrubbing antibacterial ect. I have also heard of mineral oil in the water that will also drown the mites. The goal is to kill the adults and kill all the eggs I don't freeze I just use steam or near boiling water and some scrubbing. the remaining issue is mites can walk quite far away from the enclosure and lay there so that vector must also be dealt with hence the DE or dri die it keeps the mites from returning.

If you do it right it won't harm the snake, but I guess that's true you shouldn't mix it yourself if you haven't done so before. I personally don't even mix it myself, my local exotic reptile shop does it for me. I won't suggest this anymore.
