Storage options F/T feeders
Ok ok..Silly question? Maybe lol But I refuse to buy frozen rodents and put in my freezer where I keep food and ice etc etc! You know the basics! Should I buy a small freezer? Use a cooler? I'm getting mad thinking about this lol

Re: Storage options F/T feeders
Mine are in my freezer on the bottom shelf. Along with my other frozen food for my saltwater fish. The reason I keep them on the bottom just incase something does leak it will not get on my food plus everything is bagged or doubled bagged.

My freezer is split between a top and a bottom with two different doors so rats and booze are in the smaller top door and food in the bigger main door ha I'm looking for a chest freezer tho since I'm starting to produce rats

How much do they run?

I just saw one at BJs today for about $80, but it's pretty hefty.

It must have been a Black Friday thing since it's online for $120.
I saw this one which is pretty small, but it's pricy as anything.

Re: Storage options F/T feeders
Hey, if it doesn't work, you have a spare fridge for beverages of your choosing. :P
I'm more northern MD now, but I went to grad school in DC and my undergrad north of Frederick, MD.
-
That looks more mini fridge you want a freezer or you'll have a bunch of unfrozen rats sitting in a fridge
-
-
I'm considering getting one in the future, but for now I keep my f/t feeders in my freezer with everything else. They are double bagged in the Ziplock freezer bags and usually wrapped in a paper bag just so you don't realize what they are when you open the door. Although, since it's currently only me staying in my apartment, they're just chillin on the shelf in the double ziplocks. :P

I found a 3.5 chest freezer on cl for 40 bux. Best investment for my collection outside of my vision rack. Fits perfect in my garage next to the human food fridge.... I stock up on frozen rats every time a show comes through so Cal.

This is what I do. The bottom shelf of the freezer is non-human grade dog/cat food (i.e. green tripe) and whole feeders. I also put specimens I collect for work (i.e. fresh dead birds) in this shelf. Above that is the human grade dog/cat food. These shelves are ONLY pet food, no human food ever. Above the pet food is the meat for humans, and above that is the rest of the frozen food for humans.

Re: Storage options F/T feeders
I bought this mini fridge/freezer last year ( http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=203474092&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_sku=203474092&ci_kw={keyword}&kwd={keyword}&cm_mmc=shoppi ng-_-googleads-_-pla-_-203474092&ci_gpa=pla#.UMZ8ffX4JfM ) but I got mine from Walmart, not Home Depot (same freezer/fridge though). I use the freezer part for my rodents and the fridge part for my coca-colas. It currently sits in my bedroom. I will, however, be investing in a small deep freezer pretty soon and converting the mini fridge/freezer that I do have into an incubator that I can incubate both corns and ball pythons separately without needing two incubators.
-
I have a big freezer downstairs to store venison, sausage, other meats and my frozen rodents in the basement.
-
thanks for all the replies!
-
We have two freezers, one is dedicated to gross stuff. Kind of silly considering it's a brand new full size stand up freezer, but two people don't need a lot of freezer space so I say, "at least it's getting used!" :) Other wise, I would just put them in a tote and dedicate that shelf to dead rodents only.
-
We just put em in the freezer with everything else. They are frozen in a bag plus everything else in freezer is closed up or bagged so they dont hurt anything.
-
I keep mine in the big freezer, I just keep the bag in a sealed opaque Tupperware container so my boyfriend doesn't have to see them every time he wants some ice water.
What's the big deal with keeping them around food? As long as they're contained it's not like they get into things.
-
How long can they last in the freezer in a a zip lock bag? How long vacume sealed?

Home depot - you can get a full size dedicated deep freezer for around 170-200. It's steep, but you don't want to risk losing all of your food should you get something cheap that quickly becomes ineffective. I use to keep mine with the icecream and frozen meat, but when I started reading on zoonotic diseases that were not killed by freezing and found in rats, I decided it wasn't worth the risk so I got my own deep freezer. Now I order 100% Box loads at a time minimum and works great.

6 months solid without worry, I've heard of people storing them up to a year and still being ok. Vacuum or ziplock I have not noticed a difference as long as they are sealed and not all defrosted at any given time

I had the same problem, my wife wasn't having f/t in her freezer. I checked on CL and found a mini freezer for $50 that can hold hundreds of rats in different combos of pinkies, smalls, weanlings, mediums, etc. As long as you have the room for the freezer. But check CL before you go out buying a new one. People sell cheap deep freezers on there all the time.

At least for me, it's not about it touching food (I used to keep my feeders in the freezer with my food when I only had one or two snakes). Right now, it's about the other people in my house not liking the fact that there are rodents in the freezer touching THEIR food. I think it's more of a gross factor for them. So I just am being respectful and removing the rodents from the freezer all together so they don't have to see them.

What on earth do you do for work lol?

Re: Storage options F/T feeders
I store mine in the freezer with our food too. My wife isn't thrilled with it but she tolerates it. I keep them wrapped in a ziplock bag and then put that bag in one of those plastic rectangle Chinese food containers. I label the container so no one is surprised.
