How big is too big for males???
I have a male pied who is a proven breeder (not w me) that I acquired through a trade. When I got him he was huge looked female. Bigger than any female I have. He was over 2000 grams. Well I have since put him on a diet of 1 small rats every other week. He is slimming down at around 1650 grams as of today, but he still has no intrest in breeding. I know huge males get lazy and arent prolific breeders or so I have heard.

I have tried to put other male sheds w him and female sheds. Used sperm plugs rubbed from another male rubbed on his female NOTHING NO INTREST AT ALL!!!! Worst part is wants it. She wags her tail like crazy when he is introduced. Ive put him in her tub and her in his tub. Still nothing.

Paired them and misted like crazy still nope, paired when storms were comin through. Nothing

Any other tricks, tips, hints would be very much appreciated

Looks like you have tried all the tricks. Try pairing the day after a meal. How often are you opening the tub to check for a lock?

I usually feed saturday and pair sunday. You think i ahould pair right after feeding??? Also i open tubs once at night and once in morning. As close to 12 hrs apart as possible. Ive tried just shining a flashlight through the tub as to not open or disturb them and still nothing. All other boys are doing what they should be.

I would try putting a sheet over the rack.
It helps keep them from stressing.

One trick that supposedly works is taking them out for a drive :gj:. Susan over at UK Exotics says that will sometimes do the trick. A 10-15 minute drive in a box. Not sure why, but that's just something that might work. Might just be a myth though. Still, I wonder if that would help ya :gj:. Fill me in on your results :D.

I have a 2300g male pinstripe that I got as a proven breeder is locking every so often.
Most of my big males are between 850g and 1300g.

I would say his weight may be okay depending on how long he is. I have a big pied male that is 2300g my female pied is also about the same, but they are both pretty long, so he is not overweight or anything. He is a very strong breeder though and as such he goes off food in September and I'm guessing wont go back on for another couple months. I figure this weight keeps me from having to worry as much about how long he is off food and do not have to monitor him as much as a 700g breeder that chooses to go of feed.

As for him not locking up yet, as others have said, its still early. I know patience is easier said than done as I have a few that are being stubborn myself.

Let him eat. My guys pig out in the fall before they go off food in the winter. I have a 1600 gram black pastel that locks like a champ.

He might just not like the new girls. Ball pythons hate change, and my established pairs always lock first. Sometimes it takes them a few months to get used to a new mate.

And sometimes they just don't like a particular girl, or vice versa. Have some back-up males lined up, in case he's still not locking with her in the spring.

In my experience pieds tend to be lazy animals in general. When handling, eating, breeding, pieds have always seemed... well lazy I guess is the best I could describe.

I agree with jerry. there's a difference between a big male and a fat male. I have some pretty big males and they are strong breeders.

breeding season is long. keep pairing them. but the time that they are separated is as important as the time that they are paired. in other words, they need the time apart or he will lose interest. one reason why you don't place a male with a female the whole season without removing him.

I have an ultrasound. I've placed a male with a female recently, her follicles were no bigger than 7mm (not close to being ready) and she tail wagged and scented the tub up. he was locking with other females but not her. reason I place him with her is to help start her follicle growth and to see what would happen.
good luck and keep us posted, don

Why is everyone assuming its the males fault? As many of us men know, sometimes girls just don't wana. She could be the root cause of the problem. Locks can happen anytime and they will when both parents say the time is right. Come on haven't you had this talk with your parents? Lol.

Have you double checked the gender of your "male"?

I have no real reason to believe this has anything to do with your problem but I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it:

You got him over 2000 grams and have 'slimmed him down' to 1650? Maybe losing 400+ grams is putting his body in a position to feel unfit for the energy tax of breeding? 1 small rat a week doesn't seem like starving him, so don't think that's what I'm accusing you of or anything. I just wonder if the weight loss itself is affecting him.

I have since based on the info given to me started feeding him once a week vs every other. He ate last week and this week. I hated not feeding him w all the other snakes. I felt terrible, guess i got some bad info.

Side note been raining here for last 2 days paired them up no lock yet but it looks like hes got her in position and is doin his foreplay.... Atleast i hope only took a quick peak

Yeah I like my males small, but I wouldn't try to make a big male smaller!!!

Could we get some more incite into the reasoning behind that Jon?
I've bred males from 400 grams to 2600 grams and had good luck with all sizes of males, just curious why you have a preference for smaller size?

one of the breeders that got me started breeding also likes his males around the 700 to 900 gram range. not that he gets rid of them after they get over 900 grams. it's just the size he likes them at. he was probably most successful with males at that size. my best breeders are well over the 1000 gram mark. big not fat
