Almost. The subject is "I am bored." I will add a space in the blocked word: shi-te imasu.

What are you using to learn Japanese? I can only read/write hiragana and katakana. I have absolutely no vocab skills. I went to Japan and was able to read signs. NO IDEA what it meant haha.

Also various online dictionaries.
I don't know any of the Kanji yet. I am focusing on understanding verbal conversation first.

Take a look at http://www.textfugu.com/ Textfugu is pretty good also. "Learn Japanese the hard way" It made me learn hiragana and katakana first though lol.
Genki textbooks is also a pretty good "traditional" way of learning.

Hahaha sorry, I'm just playing with hiragana now. You make me want to learn Japanese again.

No habla es.... that....
Actually I took a semester of Japanese in 6th grade and I thoroughly enjoyed it and was learning pretty quick, I've just pretty much forgotten everything.

My first-ever Japanese phrase that I learned was "betsu ni". I know words and a few phrases, but only from watching subbed anime. :P I always say I'm gonna try and learn Japanese but then I remember how damn hard it is and I give up. I couldn't even pass Spanish in school. xD

Betsu ni roughly means "It's nothing."

I would be doomed if I ever went to Japan, since the only phrase that I know is "Anta baka?". In my case, the answer is always yes.

Nah not doomed. Everyone is really nice and they try their best to speak English or grab someone who does know.
The #1 Japanese phrase that saved me several times:
"sumimasen, eigo o hanashimasu ka?"
Excuse me, do you speak English?
-
I wanna go to Japan so badly, I hate airplanes so not sure how a long flight would be tho.

Re: Boku wa taikutsu shi-te imasu!
I dunno, I always feel like if you're visiting a country, you should try to speak the native language. I haven't learned any foreign languages yet, and I have a lot of respect for multilinguals.

Yup. :) It was my favorite thing to say, especially when I was trying to be sarcastic. It just works so nicely with that tone of voice.
-
If I ever have the opportunity to, I'd love to go to Japan. It's the country I want to visit more than any other. It's the birth place of so many cool things. Nintendo. Mario. Ninjas. Samurai. Anime!
-
If anyone actually wants to practice with me let me know. The only thing I am missing with my self study is someone to bounce things off of.
Onegai shimasu!
-
You're making me think I should probably brush up on my Mandarin starting well... now.
It's going to be an uphill battle, haha. I'm in for it.

The only Chinese I remember from Kung Fu iS:
The numbers:
Ei, Ar, San, Su, Wu, Lil, Gi, Ba, Jo, Shr. And I am sure there are some misspellings there.
And we said Shr Fu instead of Sifu. We used what southern Chinese is called.
We called our instructor Ja-Lin which means something like coach.
When we ended class we would say what sounded like: Shay shay Ja-Lin. Ja-Lin zijin. It meant something like "Thanks coach."
-
My personal favorite Japanese phrase thus far:
Mada mada dane.
-
I watch this all the time. And every time I do, I want to go to Japan SO BADLY.

That can mean many things. "You still have a ways to go," "No, not yet," "Not good enough", "Still no good", or "You still have lots more to work on"
I have only really heard it in the Prince of Tennis anime. The guy used it as an insult or intimidation in a tennis match.

Yep, that's exactly where I got it from. It was a pretty decent anime once you accepted that the characters had DBZ-esque tennis abilities lol.

Re: Boku wa taikutsu shi-te imasu!
May I pop in and suggest you do learn Hiragana. Ignore Katakana for now and know that no one knows much Kanji...not even the ones who use it. The hiragana alphabet is very easy to learn and write. Speaking it is easy...if you understand how to speak grammatically. Learning how to speak grammatically is easier when you learn to write it in a structured way.
Just a tip to help you along you way.
P.S - Katakana...is brutal. I hate it. Hiragana is so comfortable and easy and then we get...sticks. :( No way around it, though - katakana is just as common as hiragana, if not more so.

I will eventually. But when we first learn a language we learn to speak it first. So I that is what I am working on. And using romaji to supplement it.
