Are there pieds in these eggs?
I finally figured out how to candle eggs to see pattern inside. And some of my piebald x poss het pied clutch eggs hardly have any, they just seem to be mostly pink inside. I think... maybe... there are pieds in there? High white pieds, even?

I've actually never hatched my own pieds before. And it's at least another week before these hatch. I'm going to go completely crazy.

What day are the eggs on? Color is the last thing to form on them.

Day 45, but I've been seeing pattern clearly on two of them for a couple weeks. My eggs are hatching right around day 54 this year.

(I started candling them obsessively after the pastel het pied clutch hatched, and there were two eggs that had obvious "normal" patterns inside. But the other three, I haven't been able to see anything.)

Since they are still 10 or so days away, there's still the possibility that they just haven't colored up yet. However, there could be pieds. I'd give it a few more days. Definitely show pictures when they hatch!

I asked this same question last year when I was impatiently trying to figure out whether or not I might have some piebalds in a pied x het pied clutch of 4 eggs. :)

Here's a video and a few photos I got of that clutch on day 49.

Out of the four eggs, three of them were piebalds. I hope this helps. :)

Call me crazy but I couldn't see anything but a shadow moving in that video. How can you make such a secure statement? Do you see something we don't in the video?

Pieds are very obvious while candling (at least medium to higher white ones). Color takes a while to come it, but pattern shows up fairly early on. I would candle the pink one a few more times...Could be seeing the belly. Or it could be a high white pied!? Good luck!

I think I need a brighter light, honestly. I didn't see anything at all until I bought this new LED light, but it's still not as clear as in those pictures. What kind of lights does everyone use, and where do you get them? Do you know the output in lumens?

(Day 49! I think they'll hatch on Saturday or Sunday, based on my previous two clutches. ARGH...)

Oh, you can see it in the pictures pretty clearly, if you know what to look for. Do you see the shadow on top of the shadow? The main shadow is the outline of the snake's body. But there's a shadow on the body, too. In the video, or real-life eggs, that shadow moves with the body. On the pied eggs, it's a very small shadow, with well-defined edges. Just a couple lines and triangles. On normal eggs, the shadow has a very obvious ball-python-pattern shape to it, and it's almost everywhere you look (except the belly, but you can still see the pattern coming down to the edge of the belly.)

It's much easier to learn what to look for if you start with normal pattern eggs.

I'm also having an easier time seeing it on my smaller eggs, I think because the snakes inside are squashed up against the walls of the egg. And I think I see at least one cinnamon in my pewter x het pied clutch.... cinnamon or pewter. PLEASE BE PEWTER, PLEASE BE PEWTER.

We've candled enough pied clutches to know. You can see pattern through the egg wall. As mentioned, med-high white pieds glow when candled. I use my iPhone to candle anymore.

The white portion of a pied baby will glow pink when candling, as Brandon said. :) You can also make out the aberrant pattern through the egg - it can be subtle but there is a difference when comparing to a normal being candled. In the vid I posted, you can see splotches of pattern broken up in the pink glow. I scrutinized my pics and video clips so much in the last few weeks before that clutch was due to hatch and feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what to look for now that I know what was actually in those eggs.

Looking forward to seeing what you've got in yours, loonunit! :gj:

3 noses out so far, and this is one of them:

Of course the other pied is in the egg attached to the moldy dead egg. Of course he hasn't stuck his nose out yet, so of course I get to keep worrying about him.
