Cold room, racks ok?

Hi everyone
I am thinking about getting a snake... Or 2.
Anyways i love the house to be cold and so does my mum. So my room sits at around 65 degrees. Sometimes colder and sometimes warmer. Anyways I read somewhere that uths and flex watts are not good at actually boosting the ambient temperature and I know ball pythons need it way warmer than my house!

So I guess the question is:
1. Can I have a rack in my house? Or is it too cold?

And random question: Does anyone know of any breeders in northern California? More like the southern part of the bay area? I was thinking about going to the sacramento reptile show but it's a little far and I don't want to rent a hotel to stay.....

as long as you can keep the interior temps of the enclosure above 75 you should be ok.

It might be a little tough. 65 is pretty cool... You could go with some PVC enclosures and radient heat panels instead of a rack. That is if you are only planning on getting 2 or 3 snakes. Most PVC enclosures are stackable, so they still save space but they hold temps a bit better than a rack.

With an enclosed rack you could use radiant heat panels or an area heater. I am going to make a cloth "wrap" for my enclosed RBI rack out of blanket material with a zipper for the front so I can still open the tubs (probably not necessary but I would like it in the event of a cold room during winter). I actually live in North Cali too. I am not too familiar with breeders in the area. I've had my three girls shipped to me from the East Coast. However I know Brian Gundy is in your area ans East Bay Vivarium. I have no experience with the vivarium but have had good things about Brian. Sacramento isn't that far from you either...wouldn't be more than a 90 minute drive each way. Very doable for a day trip and no need to rent a hotel room. I will also be attending that reptile show! I'd say it will obviously need to be an enclosed rack rather than any of the open sided designs.

According to google maps I love about 2 hours away from the Herp show @_@
Yeah I heard about easy bay vocations so I guess I'll give them a shot :)

So if I have a closed rack with radiant heating it should be a ok?

And for the racks I need 1 thermostat but 3 thermometers and a temp gun?

I'm a Bay Area resident with house temps in the mid-high 60's most of the year (not this week, though, phew!). I keep my snakes in a closed room with a ceramic space heater to maintain temps around 78-80. I just got my first rack with belly heat - a closed one, as suggested above - and I plan to insulate it with foam core or something before winter. It also needs something between the base and the hardwood floor - will probably start with a carpet remnant/padding and see how that goes.

I spend a lot of time thinking about ambient temp issues and would rather not be using a room heater 24/7/365, but with tubs and now a rack, it seems like that's what it takes. I'll probably switch to an oil-filled heater before winter. Good luck!

Your best bet will be to get the set up and get the temps regulated before you bring home any snakes. The enclosed racks are a good idea and insulation can be helpful but just make sure you have a good idea of a full 48 hour stability of the temps and humidity before introducing any animal to the enclosure.
