rat sizes vary about as much as shrimp sizes one mans jumbo is another mans large.
do like shrimp and look at the weight find a rat in the 90-100 gram range and he will be full but not overstuffed

Hey,
Mediums are perfect for that size of a BP.
Good way to determine proper feeder size is to calculate 10 - 15 % of the BP's body weight.
At 965gram your looking at a feeder between: 96 - 145 grams. which would be a medium rat.
Here is a good size chart for reference (I have it printed off and tapped to the side of one of my racks). LOL
So since hes been on sm rats could that be why hes not really gaining weight?
Ove only had him 3 weeks.and ive just been feedong what his previous owners were.
But i think hes big enough to go to mediums.

Three weeks seems a tad impatient if you ask me (give him a couple of months, that's when you start to really notice the weight gain) but yes, feeding a snake inadequately sized prey will hinder its growth.

Small rats are not grossly too small. but he should be on mediums.
Sometimes all I can get my hands on are small rats so If I have one on mediums I'll give them a small, even though it's smaller than they should have. It's not a big deal.
You wont see much weight gain in 3 weeks anyhow but you should switch him to mediums next feeding.
Cheers,
Chris.

Oh im not impatient lol. I just took him to the vet and they told me he was a little underweight so i was just asking if that could be because es on to small of prey?

Re: Medium rat too big?
How long is he? Generally my rule of thumb is that a BP should have about 500 grams for every foot. :P

Ii
Hes 3 feet long so hes about 500 grams underweight? :(

I feed my BP rats in the 70-90 gram range, because that is the average size of ASF's, their natural prey.

A nearly 1000 gram male not noticeably gaining weight over 3 weeks.. not a surprise for me.
He's big enough to handle mediums, but I prefer my males to stay on small rats in general. Trim snakes are active breeders!
I start feeding mediums to females in the 700-800 gram range usually.

Oh hes not gonna ne a breeder. And i havent weighed him in the 3 weeks. Like i said his vet said.he was a little underweight like you can noticibly feel his spine. I think hes healthy thougj.he doesnt seem overly thin and he always.takes his food.
Today is feeding daay.so im gonna see how he takes a medium rat :)

From my supplier of rats I would be feeding you snake weanlings! (all suppliers are different, mine, weanlings run 45-65 gm... smalls 65-10gm and medium are 100-200gm)
Have you had a fecal exam done? I would HIGHLY recommend doing a fecal exam and if it were negative I would re run in 3 weeks. It really sounds like the snake has been under fed or has parasites...

Sorry I read it was 3 feet at 500 gms... I might run a fecal as a matter of course anyway. Ignore me I need my coffee...

Ive had obe done he dpes have some parasites and is being treated for them.

The parasites are probably why he is thin. Can you post pics of him? While a medium rat may be ok, my one male seems to prefer a small rat more frequently, and he is just fine.

It is quite likely the parasites are responsible for the bit skinny side. I actually check mine every year, even feeding F/T.
He is a little thin, but give it some time and he will plump up. If you don't want to switch to mediums just yet then start him on a 5 day feeding schedule.
It will take a bit of time to see the weight gain but he will get there.

I switch my snakes to mediums when they reach 600 g+ on empty. Small rats go to anything 300 g+

Well he ate it :) it took a little longer then normal buts down. He then prroceeded to adjust his jaws to get some of thhe substrate out. Thenn he explored some and mow iys time for night night in his hot side hidey hole :)
hes got a big ole full belly :)

Lmfao so normally he fits perfect under this hideey hole but after that big meal not so much lol!
He didnt fit under his rock after eating the mediym rat. It just sits on top of him when normally he fits under it. Soso i said i guess im gonna have to invest in a.bigger rock.
