A nearly 1000 gram male not noticeably gaining weight over 3 weeks.. not a surprise for me.
He's big enough to handle mediums, but I prefer my males to stay on small rats in general. Trim snakes are active breeders!
I start feeding mediums to females in the 700-800 gram range usually.

From my supplier of rats I would be feeding you snake weanlings! (all suppliers are different, mine, weanlings run 45-65 gm... smalls 65-10gm and medium are 100-200gm)
Have you had a fecal exam done? I would HIGHLY recommend doing a fecal exam and if it were negative I would re run in 3 weeks. It really sounds like the snake has been under fed or has parasites...

Sorry I read it was 3 feet at 500 gms... I might run a fecal as a matter of course anyway. Ignore me I need my coffee...

The parasites are probably why he is thin. Can you post pics of him? While a medium rat may be ok, my one male seems to prefer a small rat more frequently, and he is just fine.

It is quite likely the parasites are responsible for the bit skinny side. I actually check mine every year, even feeding F/T.

He will only eat live. Ill try to post a pic.

He is a little thin, but give it some time and he will plump up. If you don't want to switch to mediums just yet then start him on a 5 day feeding schedule.
It will take a bit of time to see the weight gain but he will get there.

I switch my snakes to mediums when they reach 600 g+ on empty. Small rats go to anything 300 g+
