Anyone else into Folk Metal or Symphonic Metal? (a Headbangers Paradise)
So I'm an all around Metal head... I listen to everything from Norwegian Black Metal to Death Metal to Progressive Metal, but have recently really gotten into Celtic Folk Metal. It isn't too often that you hear bagpipes along with heavy metal guitar or electrified mandolin lol.
Here is a band called Eluveitie, they are a Swiss Folk Metal band

Enter Apocalyptica, a metal band with no guitarists... only Cellos:

Then there is Symphonic Metal... This is what got me into metal in the first place.
Here are some of my favorites:
Progressive Neo-Classical Symphonic Metal Band, Symphony X:

Progressive Metal Band Dream Theater:

And finally Djent, an offshoot of Technical Metal

I am in to pretty much any metal EXCEPT Cookie Monster vocals. I have never been able to get in to that.

Well, I am 36 and have been listening to metal for over 20 years, and I am still not in.
-
Ugh I love apocalyptica!
Haven't heard any of the others you posted but I am sure checking them out.
I have been a metal head since I was about 4 years old.

Yeah, most of what I listen too isn't well known, (at least not in North America lol Europe has all the fun...)
-
Well, until about 10 minutes ago, I did not know that I was into Folk Metal, but that Apocalyptica is fleepin' awesome!
-
I'm a big fan! Folk, neo-classical, operatic, symphonic, black, death, Japanese, and progressive metal. I love it all, new and old. Its also costly to import for the non torrent using individual. :(
-
Yah well I have heard most of them actually my sisters boyfriend is really into all metals and he really does his research on them so I have heard of like septicflesh and dimmu borgir I just have never got around to listening to them.
Yes Slim apocalyiptica is amazing. Check out their cd called worlds collide in my eyes its one of their best.

In my middleschool music class i did a project on Metallica and for the background info i explained how they originally wanted to name their album Metal Up Your A$$, instead of Kill 'em All. I got sent to the principles office bc the teacher said it was innapropriate. Ever since then ive loved metal haha.
Thats some pretty cool stuff aaron, havent heard of most of it before. Thanks for sharing!

For sure, at my College (University of Central Florida) We have a Heavy Metal Club... so we all find/get new music/bands from each other. I have simply learned not to ask where it was downloaded from lol I like to support the bands that I like, and do so as often as possible.

More labels are starting to get stuff over here but its still mostly main stream like nightwish and such. I got most of mine in college too. Exchange students with sister schools in places like Tokyo help :) But the really good stuff is almost impossible to find torrents of and itunes doesn't have rights to them. I have also notices that some of the music I have gotten from itunes has disappeared off my device the last time I did an up date and it doesn't show in my purchase history. Make sure you always burn a hard copy!

Haha My music teacher in 8th grade allowed us to play Ride The Lightening for a full class which was my start to metal. Actually just a few months ago so GWAR for the first time. This is from the show I found on you tube I was up front and got a face full of blood from the headless zombie. :D

YESYESYES.
Apocalyptica, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Born of Osiris, Eluveitie :lick:
Nom. I like to chuck a bit of pirate metal in there too, Alestorm :D Numnumum.
-
Pirate metal is bad a$$ !
In highschool all the shop teachers ( wood working, automotive, and metal work ) were all metal heads (all 3 different teachers) So we would always be aloud to play our music during class.
I have actually gone to a concert with one of those teachers!

While I'm a huge Thrash Fan (Old-School or Teutonic), I do enjoy Folk metal a lot, but for reason I can't stand most Symphonic Metal.
And for sure it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that it's symphonic, since right after Thrash, my favorite music is Classical and Symphonic/Orchestral music.

How about some plain old Melodic Death Metal like Dethklok? Hands down one of my favorite bands.

alright aaron, I wasn't going to throw my two cents in, but since it appears this thread is gaining steam, I figured some real metal ought to be represented (not that I don't adore dream theater).
the below clip is a short film entitled 'the separation' that someone used to feature 'jambi' by tool. although the film is unrelated to the song or band, it works quite well, even if it is a little too on the nose. the song is more of a metaphor, but it makes for a moving piece nonetheless.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LNGPAMbpp10
I know the concept is rather dark, but it's nothing offensive or obscene.

Canadian Metal!!! 7th Reign! My uncle is actually the bass player with the crazy amount of hair.

Never heard of Eluveitie, but I like what I heard.
Is this the same Apocalyptica that put out those songs with Rock Band Vocalists (Gaven Rosdale, Corey Taylor...)?
I could never get into Symphony X or Dream Theater (Power Metal) , but I do like Dimmu Borgir (they don't get much respect because they are too "commercial")
One thing I don't like about Born of Osiris is the 3 min songs. 3 min songs are BS.
Periphery has grown on me.
My favorite bands are Behemoth, Dark Tranquility and In Flames.
And I love a lot of female fronted metal bands.
The Agonist is awesome. She is amazing and she looks really good too.

Re: Anyone else into Folk Metal or Symphonic Metal? (a Headbangers Paradise)
After hearing the Alestorm which I like it reminded me of what I thought of as "Irish Metal"

I listen to tool, not a band in my short list, but a good band none the less!
I don't have an issue with dark lol, I listen to bands like Behemoth and Gorgoroth

the caveat was included for any unsuspecting souls unfamiliar with the genre at hand. I am sure you have no issue with themetically dark music.

Yes, but they have had a slight line up change since the video I posted... (They lost a member, I don't remember if they replaced I'm or not)

True, I have seen all 3 seasons quite a few times (got them in Dvd) and I never get tired. As for Season 4, I'm not loving it :/

Awh man I love you guys. I wish there were more people like you in my town!!! The music tastes of the people living here is poor.

My wife and I actually saw Eluveitie back in February. They were one of the opening bands when we saw Children Of Bodom in Cleveland. I don't mind folk metal, but they had too much going on at once, especially for a live setting and it just sounded awful. A horrible, jumbled mess. Not to mention the singer insisted that the crown get far too rowdy and a lot of people ended up leaving the show covered in blood. NOT fun at all!
I will say that Europe has the best metal, especially Sweden and Finland! Alaska has some pretty decent metal bands as well. Some bands that I can't get enough of are Opeth (earlier), Soulfallen, Turbid North and Daylight Dies.

have any of you heard of Turisas? electric violin and accordion! and yes they're folk metal.

How about mariachi metal? (they do 70's-80's rock/metal covers using mariachi instruments) this was personally recorded by me using a digital camera.

How about the German metal gods, Rammstein! again this was recorded by me using a digital camera

they're small time still. they just released their first album several weeks ago which i got(from their website). most of the time they tour california, especially the los angeles area.

Rammstien is a nasty, dirty, disgusting band.
Thats why I love them!!! I have listened to them for sooo many years. :partyon:
-
This is the first time I've ever listened to folk metal, not too bad. I haven't listened to metal in a while. I've kind of strayed to different genres, like gothic americana. Jay Munly is one of my favorites in that particular genre. But I still like some good ole hard rocking tunes. Bands like Job For a Cowboy, As I Lay Dying, and Beneath the Sky really get me going.

<----- LOVELOVELOVELOVE TOOL!!! As you can tell from my profile pic lol. I also loved alex grey's work. (hes their album artist). I think hes done all their album artwork but im not positive. I know its not metal, but check out some of his work:http://www.alexgrey.com/
There supposed to start recording a new album in june. I thought it was supposed to be realeased in May but i was misinformed. First album since '06, im super stoked.
Besides tool and the other bands ive seen on this thread heres a few other bands i like that i havent seen on here so far! (im not really a musically inclined person so i cant really categorize exactly what they fall under or whatever). The first two ive seen live in concert which was pretty sweet.
The Acacia Strain:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyMPLiizIzg
Hatebreed ( from New Haven, CT my hometown!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2i2_MABXNA
Anthrax:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQmte...feature=relmfu
Slayer. (shoutout to Kerry King who i found out breeds carpet pythons and shoutout to Kevin from NERD for naming a bp morph after this song!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6_zsJ8KPP0
Dream Evil. (ive only heard their album, The Book of Heavy Metal, and really like most of it!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_WMHg8c_4I&ob=av3n
Well i could keep going but these 5 are enough for now. I also like and havent seen mentioned: Pantera, Slipknot, Ozzy/Sabbath, Motley Crue if im in the right mood, and Megadeath.
Id also like to add that this is one of my favorite threads, second only to the female keepers thread :D
-
Re: Anyone else into Folk Metal or Symphonic Metal? (a Headbangers Paradise)
I'm pretty big into J-Rock (weird, I know haha), ranging from hard to sweet.
Some examples (I'll put Eng sub of them for those who are interested in listening, although some are in English):
The Gazette-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGgCSSdIyrU (Red)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emJwa2CiD48 (Guren)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA1vKUJnOg4 (Uncertain Sense)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZZGeCNa_5Y (The Invisible Wall)
Alice Nine.-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Onk5S-p_fU (White Prayer)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36TDzZj7liA (Velvet)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDYuHbuzO9s (Q)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZoVl...eature=related (Shunkashuutou)
Gackt-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqvZU...eature=related (Last Song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUT2TEnZl5g (Lost Angels)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeg1U8Gv8fk (Flower)
I really feel like a lot of these songs have meaning to them, and if it's a little childish, I like to reminisce and sometimes tear up while listening to these songs.
-
Something else id like to add here is this dope website where you can buy a crapload of cool music t-shirts and other items. Its music in general but caters to alot of metal fans too:
http://www.rockabilia.com/
Ignore me if everyone knows about that site already lol.
