Hospital yay!
So yesterday, I woke up with a sore throat... I figured it was just because I went to sleep with no bottle of drink for the middle of the night and when I woke up I could not be bothered getting out of bed...
The day went on, and it became slowly more difficult to swallow. I'd skipped breakfast, and so I needed to eat (diabetic, need insulin). I managed to force some sandwiches down me...
But when I got home the pain spread really quickly into my mouth and down my throat to the point where it became impossible for me to swallow, eat, drink and speak!!! I was like "Oh my biscuit what is going on?!" but in my head... My throat was swollen, red and seriously painful. Next thought was -I'm going to stop breathing in a minute...
So I went to the out of hours doctor and because Im diabetic they allllways test my blood, and ketones level (it's like a poison in your blood which turns it acidic for those who dont know) and ketones are through the roof, blood sugar is through the roof and I ended up in A&E with a tonne of doctors that clearly weren't talking to each other or reading the notes because they'd come in, talk to me and then look puzzled when my other half answered - Hello. I can't speak without crying? Duh.
Anyway - After hours and hours of A&E (actually my shortest visit) and getting impatient, they said "oh we're keeping you in."
So I ended up whispering as loudly as possible "MmmmmNO. Think I'll go home."
I wasn't going to hang around and waste their time and space (they were struggling last night) when I can deal with it at home.
Sometimes I think Drs know best...and other times they need to listen to the patient.
Currently living off milk :sweeet: And Munch was being all cute and lovely when I got back too :)

sorry to hear that. Hospitals are never fun.

Definitely not! Although I did make my other half laugh because the sick bowl looked like a cowboy hat...so I wore it for a bit.
Empty of course!

Steal away, I got a million more :P
I can't speak, and eating is seriously hard! Honestly ordering Mcdonalds when your voice slightly resembles Voldemort is both frustrating and highly amusing...
Grant is getting some serious peace though!! Every time I try and talk I push it and get all light headed :( Im on penicillin for a few days an then back to the docs!
-
Hope you are ok. That's scary stuff!

So to hear that cherry. Get well soon, sending love your way across the pond!Make sure Grant waits on you hand and foot haha!
Ive had strep throat like 3-4 times. I cant stand having a sore/swollen throat like that :(
-
Cherry, take care of your self and keep an eye on your sugar levels. You know better than most that any disruption in your eating patterns can play havoc with your levels.
Get some rest (there must be something interesting on the tele), drink as much fluid as you can stand, and please feel better soon!

Get some rest, and I hope you feel better.

Thanks so much guys :) I've gone through about a million litres of smoothies, and am on pretty much double the amount of injections :) Don't particularly want to end up back in hospital :) I don't know what hospitals are like over the sea and far away but here you'd have thought they'd never heard of Diabetes on some occasions!
As for Grant waiting on me hand and foot, he's at work a lot :( so bed and a pile of movies and smoovies! (Maybe a cheeky bit of Xbox :P)
-
Soooo about five minutes ago, I was straining to talk - and suddenly sound bursts out and now this is what I sound like pretty much...But obviously with a British Accent xD
I'd post a video of myself but I look like a corpse.

I hate being lazy! :P I like my lazy days every now and again but I'd rather be out doing something... Feeling like death walking though makes getting out and doing something difficult lol! Just about managed to go out and get Dr Dales Zombie Dictionary - The A-Z guide to staying Alive for my other halfs birthday, and a McDonalds before thinking "Yeah...Bed time is now time!" :)
Guhhh Xbox Live ran out yesterday :( :(

So...I had a hard time understanding at first. Then I recited the entire post again with a British accent and it mostly made sense then. Not sure why. Maybe I've been watchign too much BBC America. Sitll don't know what A&E is though. LOL. It's Art & Entertainment to me.

You probably should have stayed at the hospital. Having a swollen mouth/throat along with keratones being through the roof isn't good. Sure, you recovered, but it isn't something to mess around with.

It't ketones :) I know you shouldn't mess around with ketones, I've been Diabetic for nearly 12 years, had more admissions with acute diabetic ketoacidosis than I can count on two hands. I got referred to the DAFNE regime, and week intensive course, last year to learn to be more independent with my diabetes, injections and diet. I also learned how to reduce ketones and blood sugar level at a safe pace :) So had I felt the need to stay in hospital, and take up a bed, and their time, I would have. Believe me, I've never walked out on a hospital admission, I made sure the doctor understood where I was coming from and she felt it was fine for me to go home. I'm on penicillin for the throat issue and it is getting easier, slowly. I'm not one to mess around with things I know nothing about.
LOL h00blah, you may get an email with a link sometime soon haha :P
-
...and the voice thing? Is that referring to Masons posts? Or mine?
Confused. It's 2am nearly...tired :)

Generally we would have admitted you at least overnight to control the DKA. Illness is often what set that kind of thing off. Sounds like you picked up something viral, that will probably clear in a week or so.
I am a bit surprised they just let you walk out of there (it is always your choice, just seems they would have tried harder, then again I did not see your labs). The problem is that that the longer you are in that state (and the more often) you cause pretty intense damage to the kidneys and heart. Diabetes is also the leading cause of non-traumatic amputations here in the States.
Not meaning to lecture, but you really should consider letting them keep you next time to get it in line quicker.
Get to feeling better!
PS, I always imagined Mason's voice less Victoria Beckham and more John Cleese in drag....

I'm diabetic as well, juvenile onset as opposed to Type 2 for those in the know, lol! It SUCKS when you're sick and just adds to the hassle of being ill having to deal with high sugars and all that jazz. Not sure what you guys have available in your neck of the world but have you looked at an insulin pump, if they're available? I went on mine about 8 years ago (been diabetic for 22 years now) and it's made a world of difference in my A1C results and my day-to-day living. It's not foolproof and takes some learning to manage it and get familiar with the system but if they're available over that way, it might be worth looking into. I know with injections, depending on the type of insulin you're using (long-lasting, faster-acting or a mix of the two), it can be pretty difficult to get any real control of your levels except in a very general sense. Mine has a feature for continuous glucose monitoring that interfaces with my blood glucose meter and the insulin pump itself; it's phenomenal for control! Gives a much more accurate picture over the course of the day/night than do finger sticks alone. I dunno, just a thought. Hope you're feeling better and taking care of yourself. Diabetes sucks and it's nothing to mess around with. Take care of you and get to feeling better! :gj:

I knew they were going to say about doing observations and fluids over night. they say it every time. Unfortunately, I cannot recall a hospital admission (of the many) where the hospital have taken proper care of me. I've been given blunt, bent needles before. They've seen my blood sugar drop because they messed up my insulin dosage and then they pump me full of sugary drinks and nothing else then look bewildered when my sugar level shoots through the roof.
I went on the week intensive course because I was at my wits end and needed a better way of dealing with it, and not having to rely so much on consultants telling me how and what to do unless I needed their advice. It was a trial course and it included the procedure for ketones. Obviously, if I was vomiting and my condition was getting out of hand I wouldn't have left the hospital. I've had laser surgery on my eyes, and various other issues, so I know the risks. Unfortunately, for reasons I will not go into, certain things get in the way. Life complicates things, and I know you shouldn't take your life for granted and I have to live with this condition, but there have been times where things took priority over myself and once out of a routine, personally, I find it really hard to get back into it.
I really think I'm getting the start of a cold, everybody in my house and my partners cousin (who he lives with) have had bad colds and I thought I'd escaped!!

Definitely a pain! Yeah we have insulin pumps, and I had looked at one for a while. After a chat with a few other people I decided not to go on it in the end and stick with my pens :) I think it's just personal preference. I've been trying really hard these past few months to get back to normal, it's not easy :( Dosed up on painkillers, half two in the morning and I can't sleep now!

Since you cant sleep, and i know you like metal like me, go to http://www.rockabilia.com/
and check out all the cool crap they have there. Eventually one day i gotta get around to placing an order :)

You know, at times like this, I think of one of the wisest sayings I have ever heard, from one of the smartest people I know.
"There's a reason it's called practicing medicine."
Hope you feel better fast love.

Im using that saying. Just FYI, lol
I feel like i may have heard that somewhere but not that exact saying.

Feel free to use it all you like.
When my dad was dying of cancer, and the doctors kept switching medicine like they were playing roulette, my mom was so frustrated and angry, until I shared this with her. This helped her to put her foot down and stop letting the doctors use my dad as a guinea pig for their "trial" drugs.

That is really awful!! :( I remember during a particularly bad admission (Gastroentiritis), they were doing all these tests in the night - I was so out of it I didn't know they were using my finger tester on my toes and trying all different things hooked up to any of the various IV drip things (on of which made me lose all feeling in my hand and wrist). My blood sugar was rollercoastering all over the place... and all this time they wouldn't answer my questions with anything other than
"This is what the doctor wants you to have."
The blood testing equipment they had was ancient, the nurses admitted themselves they didn't know how to use the equipment and weren't used to having diabetics in. Now, when I was a kid and I was there on my own I wouldn't say anything. But after years of it... (i'm not always in for DKA - Diabetic Ketoacidosis - I just seem to get really sick a lot)...I sometimes find myself telling them how to look after me, how to load a testing strip into a testing machine, which insulin is which - they're labelled - in my insulin case.
My Grandparents came down when I had Gastroentiritis, and they were all running around changing things and not telling me, and I was too out of it to argue. My Gramps went insane, out in the hallway, demanding to see a nurse. It was definitely needed. I told him about the needles being blunt and bent and all that. Fuming isn't the word! He sorted them out and made it quite clear messing around with my diabetes, which was suffering already from the nasty Gastroentiritis, was a bad thing to do.
I have to say the part that made me want to laugh like a maniac and just get my shoes and go was when they moved me to a different ward and would not let me out for a walk. When I asked why, they told me I had to see a dietician. I didn't think anything of it...apart from when I got to thinking about it properly, the reason I was there wasn't for Diabetes, which was stable at that point. I asked the nurse why I had to see a dietician. The answer:
"Well with new diagnoses of Diabetes, it's always best you see a dietician. We can't let you go off on your own with only your boyfriend, because we wouldn't want you having a hypo and not knowing what to do now!"
So I simply said...
"Did you read my notes? At ALL? I've been diabetic for TEN years."
Honestly I wish I had had my camera. The look on her face.
O_________O
"Oh."
Yeah oh. I got my walk.
