    mites
I'm in need of advice, I'm a newish snake owner (a few months) I have two snakes and today I noticed what I think are mites on them. They are tiny and reddish looking.

I purchased my new Spider roughly two weeks ago, I'm thinking he came with them, although I didn't see any on him at the time. They do not share an inclosure but they both have them, I'm guessing it's from my kids playing with one and then immediately playing with the other.

I'm not sure what products to purchase. I want products that work. Any ideas?

    Thanks so much

Prevent a mite works well. I use Mite Guard from nature zone and it worked extremely well when my guys and gals had mites last year. If u have any pet stores near you you could find something there otherwise the internet has all kinds of places u could order some from. And just an fyi getting mites is not an indicator of a poor owner. Sometimes it just happens. good luck

Provent a Mite. Works great. Mites went away the day after I used it. Just make sure to follow the instructions on the can carefully.

In the mean time change all substrate to paper towels. You can also give them daily baths with a drop or two of Dawn dish soap while you wait for mite spray.

    Good luck

my experiences are that they came from the pet store where you purchased your live feeders. or they came in on a new animal. either way, it all depends on the severity of the infestation, if not bad than a spray down with prevent-o-mite should do the trick, if heavier soaks, vet visit etc may be needed. basically how i handle the lil blood suckers.

Daily bleach water everything a 1/10 mix of it, let air dry, then i spray everything down with the PAM each week, not just the tubs, but the racks especially, a real heavy wet coat at first on the rack, and even the flooring around it, , let it air dry completely, then your general misting of the tubs. Newspaper or paper towels for bedding, then every animal goes through an olive oil lube for about 30 mins at a shot daily until they are gone, (helps suffocate the buggers to death, and wont harm the animal). If they have been really infested a mix of betadine, peroxide, and luke warm water mix, (should look like a weak hot tea mixture), soak for a few mins to clean the bites and any sores you do not see. (also aids in suffocating the buggers as well), but only if they are real bad. and lots of white rubber gloves. If you feel the need to use the "Tea" mix i would advise a vet visit as well.

Thanks everyone for the advise! One of my snakes is about to shed... does that matter any?

So far everything is out of the cage and hubby is about to go get Provent a Mite, hopefully our local store has it, if not it's quite a distance to go to the Reptile store.

The guy I bought my new snake off of said mites can come in othe the wood chips? Is that true? He also said when I purchase the shavings to freeze the bag for an hour....

I forgot to say that he also said I had to pick the mites out of the scales, but didn't tell me how... is there any info about that anywhere?

    Thanks a million!

Chances are you aren't going to find PAM at any store. It has to be ordered online. The stuff sold at pet stores (like zoomed brand stuff) doesn't get the job done.

Yes mites can come on the wood substrates.

You don't need to pick the mites off by hand. That would be nearly impossible. PAM and soaking with a drop of dawn dish soap (water temp in the mid 80's) is what you need to do

    Shedding doesn't matter

Freezing the substrate bag won't get rid of the mites. The adults will die, but the eggs can lie dormant until the proper conditions arise.

Oh yeah. Also forgot to say in my last post to remove all enclosure accessories and to wash them in hot water-bleach solution. Mites lay eggs everywhere!

No worries. When I first heard of 'pam' I thought everyone meant the cooking spray. >__<

The way I used a few weeks ago was the NIX head lice shampoo method. This is what you should do:

    1) buy nix lice shampoo and a gallon of distilled water

    2) pour the small bottle of nix into the water and shake it up until the nix is mixed evenly (this can take a while because the nix is thick)

    3) take your snake out and soak it in warm water with a drop of dawn dish soap

    4) while it is soaking clean your enclosure with bleach or dawn dish soap and hot water.

    5) put the nix in a spray bottle and spritz it all over the enclosure (inside, outside, table or rack it sits on, and the floor and walls around the table or rack) Let it dry for a few mins.

    6) take your snake out and dry it off. Then spray the nix on the snake too. This is the main difference between this method and PAM. PAM should NEVER go on the snake.

    7) return the snake to enclosure and wait a week or two. If no mites then awesome. If a few make it do it all over again until their gone.

Like I said this worked for me like a charm. I'm trying to spread the word on nix. Buy it at your local pharmacy for like 12 bux instead of the 30 you will spend on Pam. Also nix is much more common. Hope this helps.

lol that I have in stock! I have four kids and I'm fearful of bugs, my worst nightmare would be to find out they have lice at 9pm and the pharmacy is closed! So even though we haven't had lice yet, there is always a box in my house!

    Good to know! Thanks
