    Why a blood python
Well I'm looking at getting a hog island boa, or a blood python to add to my collection. For those or you with blood pythons let's here why they are great, or not so great......sell me!

Me too! I was talking to some people just today about Carpet and Blood pythons.

Bloods arent as forgiving when it comes to husbandry issues as hogs are. The require cooler temps, higher humidity.

blood pythons are awesome in many ways, their normal color pattern rocks, they are not mainstream like balls, and they do not live up to the aggressive nature that they are said to have.

    They're gorgeous.

They have a unique body style all their own.

They can reach impressive sizes without being "too big".

    They aren't "everywhere".

It's entirely a matter of personal preference; they are both great snakes, though entirely different (just about opposites). I would recommend finding an adult blood and an adult boa and spending some time handling them separately.

I love how stout bloods are, and they are so full of personality. If you go CB, temperament isn't going to be an issue, but they can be a handful when they want to be. :D

Boas are typically more laid-back and are not quite as 'fun' as bloods when it comes to handling (though young/subadult boas can be very sassy!), but it does mean that they're good hang out snakes... If I want to hang out with a pet while I work or surf the web, I usually take one of my boas. My Borneo, though a total sweetie, is a bit more high-maintenance (for lack of a better word) when it comes to handling.

I personally prefer boas, mostly because of their more arboreal tendencies and their quirky personalities. That said, I absolutely adore my Borneo and you really can't go wrong with either.

I love bloods. Idk if i like bloods or black bloods better though
If i wanted to get a boa though hogs would probably be my preference bc of their more manageable size. I like the idea of getting both though :gj:

Yeah I contacted a couple breeders today about bloods. I'm pretty sure I'm going with a red blood, but man "day breakers" black blood is hot!

I didnt know black bloods existed til i saw hers. I think that i still like red bloods a bit better but id have to compare them in person bc theyre both so nice. I think that the person "Deborah" on here breeds bloods. You could drop her a PM if you have any questions

Just remember that the 3 species once all grouped under the name Curtus have gained individual species status.

There is enough confusion in the world surrounding what species is which

For what its worth, Borneos and Blacks aren't called Bloods at all

There are the Python Brongersmai, aka the "Bloods"

    Then Python Breitensteini aka Borneo's

And lastly the Python Curtus aka the Sumatran Short Tailed Python aka the Blacks

I breed Bloods and would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. I will say that you seem to get what you pay for with these animals and buying CBB is the only way to go.

I think it would depend on your specific amount of experience and comfort. Bloods may not be very long but they are heavy hitters and can be extremely insecure. You need to have the patience to read your animal because they do stress easily. I have a good friend of mine who keeps bloods and he is incredible with them but even after 25 years of working with bloods he still has to be on his toes.

I think if you're ready for the challenge go for a blood. I do not yet have one in my care but I plan on it.

My ultimate .02 would be to find someone local to you and work with some Bloods to get the feel for this incredibly rewarding creature

Yeah I have been keeping snakes and other reptiles for close to 20 years, so the comfort is there. Now I'm just on the hunt for a good quality blood.

    Mike

Care seems to be the same for all of them really

80 degrees year round and 60% humidity

I have noticed that the Borneos seem to be a bit better mannered than the Bloods, and have heard that the Sumatrans seem to be even more mellow. I don't keep any of the Blacks so I can't say from personal experience.

I will however say that they all seem to have their own personal attitude or personality if you will. Some are just mean and some are puppy dogs. The flightier ones don't bother me, it makes it fun. I don't really have any flighty adults though, just babies and juveniles. They quickly grow out of it though.

Some even seem to go through a little "puberty" time if you will and act up a bit more.

The Borneos seem to have a bit better appetite if you can call it that, they all eat, but the Borneos are just quick strikers. Some of the Bloods seem to take some coaxing sometimes. Depends on the time of year also, same as other Python species I'm sure.

Can Hogg Islands be housed comfortably in 41qt tubs? I read that boas are much more active and arboreal than BPs. Is that true? Does a Hogg prefer/need head room more than a BP?

For some reason boas seem 'scarier' or 'feistier' to me than ball/blood pythons. Am I wrong in my assessment?

Apologies if this is somewhat off topic.

Mine has a personality all her own. She's picky and almost seems to be prissy as well. It's not an annoying picky either. She's my only snake who wont take live, only f/t and you cant just put the Rat in there....she wants you to feed it to her. I have to dangle it in fron of her for a minute, and then she'll strike...then she'll drag it into her hide and eat it. She's doesn't like to be watched while she eats....she's a princess. lol

...and all the natural Bloods, Borneos and Sumatrans are in my opinion are just too pretty.
But I say both (because I am picking up a Hog Island from a rescue pretty soon) and I have a soft spot for boas :P

I have both. They are great snakes.

My Hog girl is SUPER easy going. Such a mellow snake. My Blood girl is also super mellow (both are still very young). I think my BP's have more of an attitude than my boas and my blood.

So I would go with both! :D

My bloods are by far my favorite snakes, they are very interesting and they do keep you on your toes for sure. All of my bloods are laid back but there are times when they will let you know when they don't want to be bothered, over time you learn their body language. They are extremely powerful and luckily over the years I have yet to be tagged by them, and I certainly would not want to get hit, like I said they are very hard hitters and powerful. Before handling I always always make sure they know I am there and give them a few minutes to know I am there before picking up, if they don't want to be handled most of them make it obvious by hissing, breathing heavy and they will literally push your hand away by thrashing their body at your hand lol...

Definitely interesting snakes and ones that you need to have patience with. They are not ones that like to be handled for extended periods and let me know when they have had enough. They are cool also because they are always on alert and "watching" you. Everytime I walk into my snake room my one male black will come out of his hide and rest his head along the glass of his enclosure and watch me intently lol

My female strikes harder than any snake I've ever seen, she literally puts her body airborne when she strikes and coils, pretty intense.
