Do any morphs tend to be pickier eaters than others???
Just wondering... Do any morphs tend to be pickier eaters than others? I have a super pastel, around 3 to 4 months old and 123 grams. Temps, humidity, etc are spot on. I will offer food every week and then every few days or so after she refuses. She seems to only want to eat every 12 to 14 days. Thoughts?

I don't know for sure but, my pinstripe won't eat unless it's perfectly dark and quite. If he sees any light or movement whatsoever he'll refuse his rat.

I have a Jigsaw and a Lemon Blast that eat like they may never see a rat again. So I do not think Pin has any feeding issues.
I have read that Spiders are very good eaters, but I have not heard of a morph that specifically has feeding issues.
-
Ive had pieds be real picky in the
past
-
All of my spiders seem to be picky eaters.
-
My only somewhat pick eater is my Albino.
-
My pastel- will eat what ever I give him, will even eat in shed.
My normal- she is a real PITA, mouser and it has to be a white female mouse. She is on a hunger strike now, and normally only eats 3 of 4 meals offered.

Re: Do any morphs tend to be pickier eaters than others???
My spider that came in last night pounded two mice right away so much for needing time to settle in.

Yeah, I always offer day one. The only one that I did not was my Specter who in the middle of a shed in transport. She ate a couple days later no problem.

I don't think there is any rhyme or reason based on my experience and reading a lot of what other people have to say. :)

Some really interesting comments. I think it's pretty funny Maixx that your normal will only eat white female mice (I've heard of this before too) and that some will only eat in a dark room. It's crazy that we even figure these things out.
-
My spider female is my most enthusiastic eater. She'll strike at anything warm when she smells rat. My lesser and mojave males and my het albino female are good eaters too. My albino male is sometimes picky and I have a normal female who will eat rats for a month then up and decide she only wants mice. Grrr!!

i heard pieds can be picky but i have no personal experience

Re: Do any morphs tend to be pickier eaters than others???
your going to find after everyone goes back and forth about how "X" is a bad eater and someone elses "X" is a good eater, the answer is no, the skin color does not affect their eating.
-
It's not really something that can be linked to a particular morph. My spiders and spider morphs eat like champs. Everyone has different opinions as to which morphs are picker.
-
Rumor has always been that Spiders will eat you out of house and home and Pieds are very picky. Of course, we've all seen exceptions to both. The genetics don't have anything to do with it. It's all about the individual animal.

My male Fire has been nothing but a PITA feeder since day one.
It's been almost a month now and he looks 'deflated' even though technically, he's not lost much weight.
The herp guy wants me to bring him for an assist feeding.
I'm not real keen on that but I'm worried the snake is going to die if he doesn't eat soon.
:tears:

From 12/10/11 to now, my little 8/11 Spider male has gained 600 grams...and he's on a perfectly normal feeding schedule.
At the rate he's going, I suspect that one day he'll be as big as my Boas.
From the end of September until now, my PetCo mutt girl has gone from 134 grams to almost 700.
She's a little piglet.
:)
I read somewhere that Fires are problem eaters.
Mine sure is.

My 2 100% het Clown girls do the "switch" thing, too.
Right now, it's rats.
Next week, it'll possibly be mice or not eat anything at all.
They're weird.
:P

How long has it been since he's eaten? How much does he weigh?
-
My pieds and het are hogs.
My mojave is an impossibly picky eater.
I don't think morph has a thing to do with it.
-
36 days and he currently weighs 478g.
He weighed 372 on November 2, 2011.
He ate 4 mice in Dec., 4 mice in Jan., 1 mouse Feb 3 and that's it.
Nothing since.
Totally no interest at all.
He has come of out of his hide, sniffing around while I was feeding the other snakes but as soon as I offer him a mouse, he balls back up in his hide with his face at the back.
I've tried leaving F/T overnight, sitting where he can't see me while a live mouse ate food in his house and nothing happens.
Tried several different mouse sizes/colors and he doesn't 'do rats' at all.
I'm starting to suspect this is why he was for sale in the first place.

I think it's FAR too early to even consider assist feeding...of course I haven't seen the snake, but 36 days is more of a break than a hunger strike, IMO. My het pied male went off feed last year at 375 grams and didn't eat for 4+ months(not even nearly the longest I've gone through) and he was fine.

What do you suspect is the reason? That he won't eat mice?? Did you ask before you bought?

There are tons of threads on here about this contemptible snake.....LOL
The seller jumped up and offered to 'make me a great deal' before I even really got interested in it [yes, now I know to run away from sellers like that] and told me, before I paid, that the snake ate F/T because I asked if it did.
So, I bought him.
Later we went back to the seller to ask more questions and the story changed;
"he was in the process of switching all his snakes to F/T and the snake may have eaten F/T once but it was weeks ago and he couldn't remember".
Later on his Facebook page, he admitted that ALL his snakes eat live and have always done so.
[yes, I was a noob and got nailed for my ignorance...lesson learned]
Back in November, we tried to 'wait him out' to get him to eat F/T and the snake plainly showed that he would cheerfully starve to death first, so, back to live we went.
Then, he didn't want live, either.
Then he did but a feisty mouse scratched him and he became mouse-phobic.
Then I fed him a tiny helpless mouse and he ate that and got his confidence back for a month and a half and now he's being 'difficult' again.
Unfortunately for me, I do love the little twerp so I worry.
He is the worst reptile drama queen I've ever met.
That is reason #1 I do not want to further "traumatize his delicate psyche" by having him assist fed.
I know if that is done to him, he's going to be wanting crisis counseling, cognitive therapy and possibly psych meds, later on.
[yes, he really is that 'touchy']
I f I knew then what I know now, I'd have stuck with Boas.
Brom is out laying on his second level deck right now, after being in his hide for days because he thinks it's about time for him to have another rat.
[it's not, despite what he "thinks"]
Same with Dixie....she's poked out of her hide and watching me with those eyes every time I go past her condo.
You can just imagine her thinking "FEED ME!!!!"
There's no cajoling, pampering, 'faking out', worrying or tap dancing with the Boas.
I don't even have time to say "Hey...are you hun...." before the rat is snatched off the tongs so hard they get knocked out of my hand.
I love feeding my Boas.....:D

My white snakes, that is my Pied female and my Ivory female, are very picky eaters...
-
My Pieds and Hets are all very sporadic feeders.

You didn't miss much.
They were all "my stupid snake won't eat!" threads....:D
[now how novel is that, on BP net?]
LOL

My two albino's are very picky eaters. Every other one will eat anything and just about any time. My spiders and bumble bees are the best eaters and I think they would eat every day if I let them. I have a female pastel that's the same way.
But it's my drama queen albinos that give me problems. My female wouldn't eat last time until I turned the lights off.
-
My het pieds are horrible, hoorrible eaters.
Everyone else is great.
-
My pastel is verry picky, some days he wants to be on the carpet and me dangle the mouse in front of him ,other days he just wants it to be dead, then sometimes he will only eat it if make it tottaly dark in living room

:D This makes it sound like you feed your BP on the living room floor...

Re: Do any morphs tend to be pickier eaters than others???
My normal will only eat in the dark.
My spider scares me when he's hungry. Last week he crawled over the edge of the tub and fell 2 feet on the floor before I could even pick the mouse up with the tongs. Switched him from live rat crawlers since hatch (3 mo) to F/T mice on the first attempted feeding. He eats 2 in a row every time and his feeding response is only slightly weaker for the second mouse.
The only things I've gathered from these threads is that spiders eat well. I'm theorizing that this is due to them being mentally challenged. All of the residual stress of feeding and ambush instincts seem to be reduced.
Also, that Albinos seem to be picky. I know vision doesn't play a big role in BP hunting but maybe it's hindered enough in some albinos for them to be finicky and overly nervous when they're feeding.
I have little basis for either of those judgements, just throwing that out there based on the high number of responses about spiders and albinos on these threads.

Right now my BCI is slithering around his condo, leering at and "tracking" my big Ibizan Hound, Pookie.
He's "hungry" and is doing this to fake me out and make me feed him before it's time.
["you don't gimme a rat so I'm gonna eat yer dawg!"]
I wish he understood that over feeding him will adversely affect his health.
All he thinks about is eating, though.
