    NOVA expo?
I took the 18th off work to go to the Northern Virginia Reptile Expo. It's in Manassas, which is a three hour drive for me. Has anyone been to this one? What might I expect? Never been to an expo...

    Fairly small show...Doubt it's worth a 6 hour drive!

It's a small show but they have some good vendors there with some cool stuff. Personally I try to go whenever I can but for me it's only a 30 minute drive. Are you looking to pick anything in particular up?

No. My husband and I just wanted something to do for the day together. The drive isn't really a big deal, I'll be happy to be with hubby! :DI haven't seen any other reptile expos around here, and I've been looking online. To babyknees: since you're semi-in-my-area, do you know of any others around Richmond-ish? I am in Newport News.

There is the Richmond expo: http://www.mdreptilefarm.com/shows/va/richmond.asp I've never been to it but I hope to go at some point. Check Reptile magazine's website...I think they have a listing of expos by state.

Im gonna vend that show. Its a really small show now. It used to be alot better like 8 years ago but its gotten real small. I wouldnt drive 6 hours for it. Way to small for that drive. Richmond is kinda small too. But there are some good vendors at nova.

Ok, everyone says it's a "small show". What does that mean? Would anyone be able to give me an estimate on the number of vendors?
I would still be willing to drive for six hours to see some morphs in person. I don't see a whole lot in Newport News. What are the chances that one would see a BEL and a piebald there?

I can't say for sure, but I'd think that your chances are pretty good, neither of those are really cutting edge anymore so you will probably see one even at a "small show"

    Pied, probably.
    BEL, not likely.

Last time I was there, there were about 10 vendors with some BPs, most of them by Outback.
There were lots of colubrids for sale and some too-big-now Boas and Pythons cheap.
Lots of lizards, turtles, tortoises and frogs.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to drive an hour and a half to go again.
Six hours would be out of the question, for me.

You can, however, visit the nearby Manassas/Bull Run battlefields.

If you're willing to drive that far for that little, you should maybe go to the next Hamburg PA show.

I hope to go there myself someday.

Hmmm... the Hamburg one is pretty good? Perhaps I will wait for that. We have family in PA, so we could make it a weekend or few days.

My husband and I plan to go. We are close to 3 hours away. Last year we bought our Spider and Pastel Ghost. It was more vendors there in Feb 2011 than it was at the one they had in the summer. We said we wouldn't go back again. We decided we would take a drive and pick up some feeders and look around. I want a lesser or a butter I'm hoping the hubby will agree that I need one :D Don't feel bad about trying to find a decent size expo we are a great distance from all of them to. Oh! We did go to the one in Richmond. It was small to but they had some great looking snakes there.

I will have a breeder male pied at my table along with a pair of breeder caramels and other stuff. I might have a lucy if he doesnt sell by then. There will be some cool stuff at the show. Outback will be there and they usualky set up a good spread and steve at morph makers is usually there to.

    blueberry,

I live in Hampton, and I've been to the NOVA show a couple of times. It's really not that bad of a drive. The show is small compared to a multi-day expo, but you'll find most of the things you're looking for, especially if you need frozen feeders or general herp supplies.

As for morphs, you'll see all the basic stuff and even some of the more expensive ones like Pieds. Probably won't see a BEL since the chances of one being sold at the NOVA show are slight and most breeders aren't going to travel with a BP they don't think they can sell.

Why wouldnt ya see a bel? They arent high end. They are actually a dead end snake. But ill have one at my tables if it doesnt sell first. And when i say dead end snake i mean once you produce a white snake thats it. What do you do from there?
  • 02-06-2012, 09:22 PM
    blueberrypancakes
Whether they're dead end or not I still really want one. Are you taking him with intentions to sell?
  • 02-06-2012, 09:53 PM
    snake lab
Yea i will be taking him to sell. I shouldnt say they are dead end. Bad choice of words. i just meant once you produce a white snake thetes nothing left to do with a white snake. They are cool for breeding and lets face a clean white snake is an awesome animal to look at

I think the Morph Makers either had a BEL or an Ivory last year. Wish I would have gotten one then when hubby was buying. He wanted a Pastel Ghost though. I enjoy the drive to Manassas. Country roads :). If you just want to get out of the house and be with other reptile lovers I think you will enjoy it. Take some money because I know you will see something you want. I always do.

All green would be cool. If i could dream up a morph it would have to be a lucy with a jet black jungle pattern over the white.

Nice! Well, my husband and I talked about it, and I got a "whatever makes you happy, dear", so we're going to this one and the Hamburg one. Either the April or June one in Hamburg. :D

I recently moved from Newport News to Wasgington DC. The Manassas show is only about an hour from me and I still do not plan on going back there again. When I went the show was pathetic. Not many vendors and no BP morphs worth checking out (most expensive I saw was a Spider).

The local shows I usually attend are the Richmond show (small but lots of great vendors like Carl Gilmore, Colin Weaver and Morph Markers to name a few), the Baltimore Repticon (decent show, seems to be getting better each show) and the Hamburg show (massive show with top notch vendors).

If you plan on attending Hamburg I recommend getting there early, it gets crazy crowded, to the point where you can't move down the aisles.

Manassas is 3 hours from here, but 6 round trip. Nice drive, though. Hamburg, PA is 6 hours from here, but I'm still gonna go 'cause from what I've seen it's gonna be worth it. You're in Hampton Roads, Derek? I happen to love it here, haven't found many reptile resources, though. Born and raised Newport News!

Yeah I'm in Norfolk at the moment by the base. Manassas is only 3 hrs away? I found a couple decent reptile shops around the area and I met a guy who is a big time breeder that works at animal jungle as well so I have a source I guess u could say lol. If Manasses is only 3 hrs one way then I may still go to that expo.

Well there is a place on Virginia beach blvd called pet paradise as well as one a little further down called animal jungle. They both have been allright for me I have never had a problem. Also one in Chesapeake on military highway that's real good but small called pets and things or pets and stuff or something like that. That one is where I got my bp and my girls leopard gecko.

I got my first (a normal) from Reptile Zone- a pet store in Yorktown. I got my pinstripe from Pet World, a local breeder had dropped him off the day before and I was in the market for one of those specifically. I get my feeder rats from a breeder in Smithfield. The guy in Smithfield also built my rack for me. Thanks for the pet store list, next time I'm out that way I'll check 'em out!

Not at all! It was $280, melamine, he also set up the heating for me and all. The heat tape- all the wiring and clips and all involved with such- and the tubs were included. One thing he did that I thought was really nice was make cut-aways in the shelves for the heat tape so that the tubs wouldn't touch them or rub against them when you pull them out. If you're interested, you could pm me your email address and I could give it to him... I don't know if he would want me giving out his info, I would have to ask him. Although he did give me a couple business cards...

I will def have to talk to him 280$ is very cheap for a fully set up rack system. ATM I don't have enough snakes to need that but hopefully soon that changes :)

I may have to hit up the Richmond or Manassas shows while I'm up in the area visiting some friends. For those of you who live up in that area, Repticon Baltimore will be May 26-27.
