Stumped
Someone asked me if this was a children's python, and I really don't think it is. I've never seen a black children's python but in some of the pics you can see some faint "spots", maybe a hybrid? I don't know, I'm usually not too bad at identifying some snakes but this one has me stumped! Any ideas?

I cant see the pic bc im using tapatalk but maybe its a spotted python? Theyre from australia too and similarly dimunutive. Google spotted python and see if it looks like that...
-
Eh...I've seen spotted pythons and even double checked. This has a python looking face and head but is very dark almost black with very faint darker black spots and an almost yellow belly. Very odd.
-
It's not a spotted or a children's.
Or a hybrid.
Or maybe even a python at all. ;)
Have fun!
(Hint - eyes and nose on top of head - why?)

You drive me crazy sometimes...LOL
Water snake of some sort?

x2
:ninja: skills right there.
BTW where is that at?
-
No idea Todd, just got a random PM on another forum asking if I knew what kind of snake it is. He said he was under the impression it was a children's python and I disagreed immediately and told him I'd look into it....lol
-
Its certainly not a northern water. The head alone almost looks like a water boa of sorts but the rest just looks off to be one. I will look into it and see what i can find.
-
Thanks everyone, I'm just concerned this person isn't taking proper care of it if they don't even know what it is. I'd like to find out asap in order to start tracking down some care sheets.

Re: Stumped
Looks like a Queen Snake, or maybe a Mississippi green water snake.:snake:
-
The head and face make me think anaconda, but I know it can't be that easy. I too can ask a few people for you.

Re: Stumped
Leah,
I've done a little google searching and it definitely looks like a water snake. There are some water snakes with the eyes on the top and side. IMO it looks like it's a water snake from the colubrid genus, Nerodia. Now which exact species, I don't know. It's head shape, eye placement, and scaling makes me think it is from the Nerodia Cyclopion species, but the belly is making it difficult to pin point.

I've been thinking about buying some good books that'll help me identify snakes and other reptiles. What do you recommend?
-
Just got back from the dog show.......
Anyone figure this out?
Don't
Over
Guess!
-
I don't know what it is but I do know it's definite NOT a queen. We have tons of queens out where I work and that is not one.

LOL!!! Good one ;)
I honestly was talking about the snake that lives by water and eats crayfish though.. :)
-
One suggestion I have got was a water snake/anaconda hybrid. Not sure which kind of water snake though.
-
That's not possible... Anaconda is a boa and therefore has live birth.. Water snakes are colubrids and lay eggs..
-
Where did your friend get this snake?
Boy am I dog tired..............

Not so. Some aquatic colubrids (Water snakes) are live bearing.:snake:

Well yeah I guess you're right, and sea snakes, but I still think it's impossible to hybridize that.

Either way, your Hints make my mind go nuts as im not huge into colubrids anymore. My first guess was some kind of water snake but not northern as i been bit by plenty of them fishing.

Parker guessed it already.
I still want to know where they got it.

thats a south american species of water snake, not sure what species though.
its apart of the family helicops, so its related to the dogged faced water snake.

The OPs pics do not show up anymore.
So are you referring to the pics I posted? If so, those are not helicops, they are indeed dog faced water snakes.
