Mom's with Reptiles?
Any Mom's out there who own snakes or other reptiles? I feel like I am in a great minority being a SAHM of two young children who also enjoys the herp hobby. I own 5 BP's and an albino Boa. Just curious if there are any others out there like myself? If so, do you share with other Mom's what your hobby is, or do you keep it to yourself mostly? I find that since a lot of women are not fond of snakes, I keep it to myself mostly. It is a lonely pursuit for me at this point without other women to share my enthusiasm with. Do you feel it is a positive thing for your children to see you enjoying this hobby? I do.

While my mother doesn't own any snakes herself I find her playing with mine on a very regular basis. I come home from work and find her in my reptile room with one of my snakes in her hands. There have been times where I had to ask her if she has her own home because she was over so often. I truly believe if she didn't work so much she would have a few reptiles of her own.

Four Leo's, two Carpet pythons and a Greek tortoise here. My son got a Leo seven years ago and, well, yeah. He has a Corn and BRB too, they live with me now as he is all over the place for work. Mmmhmm, full house. Love it :)
The dog feels out of place I think.

Mom here. I only have five snakes because of hubby's military career, but if/when we ever retire and settle someplace permanently, I'll eventually have a lot more critters. Mostly snakes and tortoises, which are my top loves, but there's so much to love in all the species!
My husband doesn't like them. My sons are indifferent to them. And my daughter, who was the only other one in the family with a real interest has moved out of the nest. So it's just me.
Mostly I get to live vicariously through my work here at BP.net and all my herping friends. :D

Re: Mom's with Reptiles?
I'm a "mom" with reptiles and also from Michigan. I have 6 bp's and 1 milksnake. I can honestly say that none of my friends share my interest in snakes - they all think I am crazy - lol
Since you are also from MI - do you attend the local Taylor Reptile Show?? I try to go every month. I enjoy just looking at all the different reptiles. My boys go with me sometimes also - its hard to find things to do that we all enjoy now that my boys are grown but reptiles is something we all agree on.

I'm a mom of three boys, and luckily my husband shares my love of snakes. We're even going to breed in the near future. We've got 8 snakes right now, two of them being rescues for my snake rescue organization, so they'll be finding homes once i'm sure they're healthy and eating well. My husband is also buying me 8 more snakes for my breeding project. It's going to be a lot of hard work, but i'm a SAHM as well, so i've got time time. :) Glad to know i'm not the only repti-mom out there!!! :D

I have two BPs, a Dumeril, and a three year old boy. I loves all our critters and I hope that having him grow up with herps will instill the same love in him. He has a plush boa thats about three times as big as him that he drags every where. He hugs it close and calls it Leela (after our boa). Silly kiddo keeps me on my toes. But, yeah- I'm a stay at home mom with snakes:D

I'm the only one of my female friends that doesn't have a child. I'm the resident babysitter for all of them. None of them mind that I have snakes (2 boas, 2 carpet pythons, 9 BPs and a pueblan milksnake). A few of them have actually started bringing over THEIR other friends with their kids so that they can go to the "Zoo".
If I ever have a child - I will always keep my pets. We already have pretty strict rules regarding the snakes and the kids, that'll just continue into day to day activities. I feel it is a spectacular way to introduce children to the fact that all animals are deserving of our love, not just the fuzzy ones.

Not a mom, but I live with my boyfriend and his daughter. She is so sweet around the snakes, and for the first couple months she'd come home letting everyone know about how jealous her friends were about her new family pets :D First thing she asks when friends are over is if we can get out the mojo boy, who is an absolute doll around people. Now she has her own leo, and my boyfriend had herp interests before we were dating so he's starting to build a collection of his own :D (starting with a normal BP male, he has no breeding interests, but lots of different species interests)

I'm a stepmom (every other weekend and 2 weeks in the summer :/ ). My husband and I have bps, boas, corns, kings, milks, a blood, a beardie, and (in about 2 hours) a crestie. We also have 2 dogs and 2 cats. :)
I tell nobody about my snakes or lizards anymore. Except my mom and mother in law. It's just easier that way. When I used to tell people, I really got sick of the, "eeeewwww"s.
I think it's important for kids to grow up with an appreciation for all living things. So the fact that my stepdaughter's getting exposed to animals she wouldn't otherwise (except walking by them at the zoo), is good I think.

I have 2 kiddos, and last year they got to pick out their own snakes to name from the holdbacks. (This is why we now have a snake named 'Unicorn', lol).

I completely agree! Someday when my husband and I have a child or two, I will be so excited to teach them about caring for and respecting the animals that share their world! :D

Chad and I have a 4 yr old daughter and he has two older girls, 11 and 12. Felicity ( the 4 yr old ) has 10 baby corn snakes that she fully cares for, plus 2 bps and 2 leos. She has been around reptiles her entire 4 yrs of life, and Chad had a snake way before I came along. All our friends and family know about reptiles :)

I'm a mom, and my 3 year old daughter loooves the snake. She's also a big fan of my panther chameleon, and she named her toy chameleon after him. Most of my friends are into the reptiles, I guess I'm lucky. I don't get many eews, lots of oooos lol.

Re: Mom's with Reptiles?
I'm definitely not a mom. My mom doesn't seem very fond of having lots of reptiles in the house, but I think she secretly likes them. She'd never admit to it, but I think she thinks they're kinda cute. Well, the cresties at least :P
-
Wow, it is nice to see that I am not the only one! My husband is indifferent to the snakes by the way. He doesn't like them, or hate them. I guess indifference is better than dislike! He does enjoy holding our new boa though. So maybe the boa can win him over. :D
-
I'm an mom of older kids. Mine right now are 16 and 18, both of which have grown up around snakes. I think they were 3 and 5 when I got my first one.....both had their own until a couple of years ago.
Most people think I'm crazy to have them and so many (and my collection is small compared to alot of others)! I helped one friend pick out his first bp last year. He just bought an albino corn hatchling for his girlfriend :D Another friend just got an emperor scorpion because of me. Although I find it funny that he won't touch my snakes but yet he has a scorpion?
I've turned many friends and people on to snakes over the years. That's how I got back in to keeping again. The boyfriend showed a huge interest in them and I broke down and bought a bp. :D
But most people think I'm nuts for having them. :rolleye2:

As my wife doesn't get on the forums, I'll have to answer for her, we have 56 reptiles in the house, but the kids are all grown and gone, of the 4 grandkids, only 2 are old enough to recognize whats around the house, but the oldest is afraid of everything and the 4yo is more interested in the feeder bugs than the reptiles.
-
Certainly not my mom. If it was up to her, I wouldn't have any herps. Good thing I live with my dad, he's even going to let me breed them :P

Re: Mom's with Reptiles?
I am a mother, and I am a herpaholic........ My daughter loves them as much as me! :D

He's 5 years old. I'm buying him his first official pet at the Jan 29th expo near me. He wants a male leopard gecko, and he wants to name him George

Re: Mom's with Reptiles?
Yep, mom here of two girls, 4 and 6. Most of my friends think it is weird that I love snakes. One of my neighbors even called me CRL (creepy reptile lady). However, I am not creepy!!!! I do not typically share my hobby with people that don't know me well since I have even had people respond that they would never step foot in my house. So you are not alone! Too bad that some people have such responses to such beautiful animals....

Well, I have an ex-husband who didn't want any snakes or rats. Four years later we've done parakeets, love birds, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs and a russian tortoise. All of those are gone and what's stuck around is the western hognose, 3 garters, a leo, and an african dwarf frog. I also have the typical two dogs, one cat and 12yo twin boys.

Yep. Everyone where I work knows I have snakes. Some of my co workers and even a boss are on my Facebook so they have recently gotten to see how involved I am in the reptile community. What with everything going on lately.. I don't hide it and I don't get much backlash either thankfully. I've been keeping CB reptiles since 1995 so I think everyone I know is just use it. I don't advertise it, but once I get to know someone it's one of the first things I like to talk about. If they don't like snakes, I won't talk about them.

Mom here as well, with a decent collection of ball pythons.
My kids are older, 15 and 17, but we've all been animal crazy since forever. Between strays, rescues, breeding birds for 20 years, obsessions over certain animals, we have lived in a zoo since before the kids were even born.
As of this moment, we have 22 ball pythons, 1 sand boa, 9 cats [including a stray and her kitten], a dog, 5 birds, a fish tank, 75 mice, 50 ASF, a dozen pet rats, a tub of feeder rats, 3 gerbils, 4 hamsters, I think that's everything.
Most people know I live in a zoo, I wouldn't have it any other way. I am also not quiet about my passion for my pythons. I get a few "you have HOW many snakes?" but I also get a lot of "those are really cool!".

Re: Mom's with Reptiles?
I'm a SAHM as well and i only have 1 snake a BP and 3 bearded dragons, 3 sons and a husband. LOL My oldest son is 21 and has a little family of his own and when he comes of with our almost 2 yr old grandson he runs immediately to Chaos our BP for a quick peek and sticks his tongue out at her...it's funny trust me! Then he runs to the bearded dragons and just watches them(not that they're very active but i guess he hopes they're going to move or dance or something) LOL Our 8 yr old is insane over snakes and has started a savings jar so he can a get his first snake by the time he's 10 (he'll be 9 in Sept.) He's got expensive tastes and is going nuts for a piebold leopard spot BP...our 5 yr old loves our pets and can be seen on any given day with Chaos draped over his shoulders asthey watch tv. With allergies in our family they make the perfect pets for us. My husband had a snake as a child so it was only a matter of time before we got one. I, myself was always deathly afraid of snakes my whole life (thanks to an ex husband but that's another story!) Now you can't keep Choas out of my hands. We've been asked to do a reptile show and tell at our sons's school but not planning on it until it gets warmer. Most of my friends are petrified of my pets and wig out even my MIL but she's getting better i think someday soon we may even get her to hold one of them...lol My mom well i have to frisk her before she leaves just to make sure she hasn't slipped anyone in her pockets! I hope to increase our snake population slowly we're going to my husband's friend's house who has a large number of them and i may just come home with a new friend. LOL

Re: Mom's with Reptiles?
My mom is an animal lover and she's asked me if she can feed my snakes so many times :P. She doesn't want to own one, but she loves them and enjoys seeing all that crazy morph eye candy. I wish I could say the same about her interest in genetics :D
