    Animal Abuse?
RANT ALERT: Watching Fear Factor right now. The challenge is for couples. The girl goes in a tank laying down and gets covered with ball pythons and some red tail boas. Their sizes range from babies up to adults. Most of them are baby balls. The guy had to stick his head in the tank and pick them up with his mouth and carry them over and drop/spit/fling/toss them into another tank. Wtf, this is so wrong. I cant imagine how stressed those snakes are and then getting dropped like 3 feet into another tank could really hurt them! Baby balls ribs/spine could definetly be damaged from a drop like that! Plus the idiots doing it are probably not being gentle and biting them. I was praying sooooo hard that the one 7 foot rtb they had in the tank would just whip around and bite the contestant right in the face. I found it to be extremely disgusting show of entertainment. The producers were probably like oh theyre just snakes, nobody cares if we abuse them. What if this was with puppies getting bit and tossed around? Then people would care I guess. Sorry for the rant but if anyone bothers to read all this please tell me if you feel the same way or if Im overreacting a little bit. Im considering writing a strongly worded letter to the shows producers but before I do Id like to see if I have a reason to or if Im being hasty... Thanks everyone

Do you have to friend them or anything? Or just like the page?
    I wanna do the same!
This is insane! I hope we can get as many people as possible to harass them with rants/letters/calls/emails/anything and maybe theyll learn a lesson!
I mean honestly who is in charge of caring for the wellbeing of the animals in these stunts? Wtf anyone with 10 minutes of bp experience would know NOT to do pretty much everything they did!

I've hated that show for years for the way it treats animals, especially snakes. There was one episode a long time ago, where the contestant had to lie in a Plexiglas box and get covered in corn snakes. There must have been a solid foot of baby corns just dumped on top of her. I was appalled. They were probably freaking out, getting squashed and rolled on... and how was the girl supposed to get out without hurting any of them? I'm going over there right now to express my disappointment that they're STILL doing this stuff

I remember that... That episode made me stop watching if it's the one I'm thinking of..

Ranting won't do much good because they're always those people who think snakes have no rights. Facebook won't.. it will take away viewers, but nothing enough to damage Fear Factor. ;\ like I said... Lawsuit! :D

I posted about this earlier in the General BP section. Maybe I posted in the wrong section. I wrote on their wall as well. It amazes me that they actually get away with this. Im in the process of writing an email. It was completed _ _ _ _ _d up what they did to those poor snakes. Some of them were only weeks old. Absolutely pathetic. :rage:

i saw this too, i had just walked in the door, and it was on the part right after that part when they were doing the close up on the rattler, and my dad went, hey look at all the snakes, all happy like, so i sat down, he rewound it, and when i saw that they had to use their teeth my reaction was what the f? it was rediculous. i hate how nobody cares that it was snakes (except us of course), but if they had done that to puppies or kittens, or even rats the whole world would have crapped a brick. they shouldve used rattlers for that stunt, the world would be alot better off. animal cruelty is the same no matter what animal is involved, and i hope to god they get their arses nailed to the wall for this. its like the whole cannonball thing with mythbusters, since it was for a tv show, nothings gonna happen to them, but if it were anybody elses accident, they'd probably be in prison

I think what is kinda getting over looked here is that someoone inside the reptile community/industry is supplying the snakes for these stunts.

Surely, NBC does not go out and purchase 100's of snake for an episode.

In my opinion the snake wrangler would be just as responsible, if not more so, than the network.

Classic case of "when two fools met"

One for suggesting this, and the other for going along with it.

Money has a funny way of clouding one's judgement sometimes though.

I had this thought too. Did anybody DVR the show? Maybe the supplier was listed in the credits.
  • 01-03-2012, 10:07 AM
    Mike41793
Yea but no matter who the supplier was they probably didnt know. NBC most likely contacted them and just said we need x amount of snakes for a stunt on a show. They probably paid them well and they got the snakes back afterwards so the supplier didnt care. Im not trying to downplay this by any means but I think that the supplier may not have really been at fault.

    Re: Animal Abuse?
If you accept payment to "loan out" a living animal and then that animal gets intentionally harmed or mistreated as the expressed purpose of the loan, you're definitely at fault. Someone who owns that many snakes doesn't fork (likely literally using a fork based on the rest of this) them over without being present for the stunt or at least asking what the purpose will be. IMHO whoever claimed expertise enough to rent out, aid in, and supervise this stunt should be the one to be hung for this.

Also, I linked this on another thread but anyone who is emailing/facebooking about this should definitely use some of the language from this page:

    http://www.straypetadvocacy.org/PDF/...rueltyLaws.pdf

By what I read, you don't really have to stretch to define this as animal cruelty. They're not farming, hunting, or doing research. They shouldn't be biting 4 oz animals that don't have fur or scruff.

Has anyone contacted any other outside groups yet to possibly bring charges against the show or its producers or even its network as well as against the invidual or individuals who owned the snakes. I know media is normally against us as herp lovers but for once we may be able to fight back. I'm sure PETA will have a field day with them and trying to bring charges as well as the ASPCA. Just a thought. Id love to see them all get fined as well as jailtime and just for a royal kick in the shorts... A national apology on air from all of them for the mistreatment of the animals.

Saw this on my twitter feed:
    "Fear Factor @NBCFearFactor
Contestants were specially fit with invisible retainers to protect the snakes from their teeth. #FearFactor
    Retweeted by Joe Rogan"
Hopefully it was some kind of squishy plastic and they had a few animal experts on hand to make sure the babies didn't get roughed up too bad. I didn't see the episode, more a fan of his podcast and ufc. Lame stunt NBC.

Even if they had specialty designed retainers the snakes were still.more then likely harmed when they were dropped. I missed the episode buy it sounds like they're trying to cover there asses.

Bawha. I've had clear retainers before. They don't do much except dull the teeth. You can still leave a bruise if you bite hard enough.
