I need to rant....
First before I go on a rant rampage does anyone know if walmart has the ability to restrict a debit card like report it as stolen? Honest question I would think they would be capable of it? They are nation wide but they told us they are not that sophisticated....not sophisticated to report a stolen card??? I have heard it done before...k Im already starting to rant just please lol someone answer if they know it would be much appreciated :)

You need to be the one to report it as stolen. From my experience anyways.
Check out what's new on my website... www.Homegrownscales.com

Ok well then I dont know what the heck happened...because of course christmas shopping at the last minute my little brother said he wanted this certain lego set so we checked our walmart...nope sold out then every walmart around us was called nope sold out then finally had one left at the walmart in Davenport Iowa lol yeah thats quite a bit aways from us. Well me and my step mom stopped at the gas station for gas she used her debit card and it worked fine she had $150 on her card and used only $20 for gas. So we drove for an hour and a half to this walmart. We go to check out and my dad had given my step mom his check book like usual but they said they couldnt accept it because she didnt have the same last name as him so I whipped out my ID they said nope we cant accept it whether your last name is the same. OK?? Then why would you tell us thats the reason the first time? Then she said he has to be here, we called him up and we asked if they would accept it if my dad could tell them his license ID # or so. no. nope they cant do that either well I was mad by then lol so my step mom was like alright whatever and she pulled out her card again and ran it through well they put it in as debit first and obviously this lady didnt know what she was doing because the manager kept telling her she was pushing the wrong buttons. The manager also said they were having problems with the reader. Well it was denied so they ran it again and it went through but as my step mom picked the pen up to sign her name the lady pushed another button and it cancelled the transaction and said oh its denied again.....whatever so the manager said we cant help you or its my job I will lose. Alright we left and went to hyvee when we got back to town at 2am! We left town at 11pm...k well we got some food and went to check out.....she pulled the card out and the man looked at us then called the manager to the front...luckily hes a friend of my dads well he looked and said the card is restricted as in its been reported lost or stolen?? Now how is that possible when we used the same card at the gas station and I was next to her the whole time never left once used it at walmart where it worked but they cancelled it and then an hour and a half later we try to use it and we cant because its reported stolen? What I thought happened was walmart idiots thought it was my dads card possibly after we tried to use his check he wrote out and reported it stolen because she never reported it stolen once why would she when she has it in her pocket? I dont know Im so irritated we took the time to drive that far just to be told we are SOL and had to go home empty handed and couldnt even get food!

Call wally world and YELL EXTREMELY LOUD, iv always had good luck with that tactic.
-
well we told them they ruined my little brothers christmas because this was the main present he was gonna get and they were like Im sorry but we cant help you with it our policies are our policies you could have possibly bought it 2 weeks ago when there were more in stores....thanks for being rude walmart manager??? oh well Im going to sleep haha

Re: I need to rant....
If you got his name you could call and complain about him. :/ Not much else you can do really. Walmart is such a PITA. :taz:

Actually any reputable business cannot take any type of plastic payment without the person whos name is on the card being the one handing the card over. I know it sucks but it is a CYA thing so they cannot be accused of fraudulent charges.
On the flip side, I know a lot of gas stations around here put a $100 hold on all credit cards when used to pay at the pump. Meaning if you got $12.50 in gas, they would hold $112.50 and after their gas charges go through the $100 is released. That could be the reason the card was denied at walmart. Then with the repeated trying to run the card, the credit card company can put a hold on the card.;)

It sucks because she cant call her bank till the 27th till then they are closed for the holidays
-
Oh man that does suck. I have used my fiance's card a lot, as well has him using mine without problem. Most places don't say a thing, other places say, huh, you don't look like Blake, and just chuckle and run it through. I know his pin number, but I don't know if that matters. Our debit cards also have our pictures on them so they know danged well we aren't the person that owns the card. Best Buy is the only place we have had troubles with.
-
I wonder if we could report them to someone because the manager lady when she was standing there she was laughing when we asked so theres nothing we can do to get the set? She laughed and said nope looks like you drove here for nothing then the blonde lady at the register told us to go back to our state and look for it. They were rude the whole time even when the manager talked to my dad on the phone she told him her job was more important than our family really who says that to someone? Doesnt matter if its true you should have a decent amount of heart to not tell someone that? Im still ticked and the whole situation wont leave my mind..... I dont know what to do...

Re: I need to rant....
People suck  but cheer up! :D
-
Yeah I don't know if you can do anything. The times we have had issues at Best Buy the person that owned the card had to come in. Even when he tried to use his mom's card-they have the same last name. You could put in a complaint, but I'm not sure anything would be done :(

ditto to this statement, we do it too, and we have our pictures on ours.
However the only place we have problems is Target.

Calling Walmart about them not taking someone else's check isn't going to do anything, becuase Walmart is doing the LEGAL thing. Businesses are NOT supposed to take checks or cards that don't belong to the person standing there, period!
Yes, tons of places DO it. Tons of places do a lot of things they're not supposed to do and if the card IS stolen, then they are liable for the amount when the card-holder comes up saying "I didn't buy that" and they can't show a signature or picture of them buying it in person.
As far as them being rude, you were asking someone to risk their JOB in order to buy a toy set last minute. It's not their fault that you brought a check that didn't belong to you and it's also not their fault that you couldn't get it closer or that you didn't buy it ahead of time.
If you called and complained they were rude, the manager will placate you on the phone, tell you it's their policy to not take checks or cards not in the buyer's name and say they'll "talk to the employees". Then they'll go tell the employees that they got a complaint and that they did right by upholding the policy and drop it.
I agree that the card was probably cancelled automatically(by the bank computers) because of the repeated attempts that did not go through. Whether the cashier was inept or deliberately cancelling the sales in order to lock the card up is going to be unprovable. At any rate, not having access to your bank accounts is a huge pain in the rear, especially with the holidays. With any luck, you'll have enough cash on hand to not be too strapped until your bank reopens.
-
So we went to our local walmart, yupp sure enough they have a button that reports a stolen card....yes a single button that restricts the card so good job manager for lying to us I hate people sometimes we are basically going to wait till tuesday when the bank opens and shes going to go in and have them print out every time the card was used and when it was turned off if it shows walmart did it she can sue them is what she said so we will see all she has on her is $20 so we cant go to her mothers for christmas or go out to eat like our tradition is and we are opeing presents at her house on wednesday instead of tomorrow.....hope everyone else is having a good holiday though :) anyways the card was denied once it the bank wouldnt have shut it off after only once it was cancelled by the lady behind the register the second time then the third we found out it was reported as stolen we called the same manager back earlier and we told him we know there is a button on the register and he paused and said oh well if there is I wouldnt have known about it.....ugh come on stop lying to us already your a manager how wouldnt you know? Oh well my step moms cousin is a lawyer and said they cancelled it on christmas eve preventing us from having a holiday and all that junk she can sue walmart? Im not sure if that sounds right but thats what she was told

wolfy-hound is 100% correct - stores should never accept a card or a check with someone other than the purchaser's name on it. They were PROTECTING your father and themselves by doing that. Same last name means literally nothing - there are probably 1000+ people within a 25 mile radius of where I live who have the same last name as me, and I don't want them using my card and/or checks easily. You cannot sue Walmart for this, and they cannot lock or disable your stepmother's card - my GF used to work as a phone banker for Wells Fargo, and that's just not how the process works.
I also would have thought that by now, the gas hold thing was common knowledge - that's how gas stations protect themselves, because they can't know how many gallons you're going to pump, but they have to authorize the purchase immediately, so they just put a hold on the card for a large amount, usually $50 or more, sometimes it's $75 or $100, and that hold doesn't fall off until the actual purchase goes through, which usually takes a few days. It's not convenient for the end user, especially in cases of low limit credit cards or debit cards, but that's how it works.
Sorry it messed up your holiday, but now you'll know how things work for the future...
-
Ok that still does not make sense at all the gas station was before walmart why would the card go through a second time it was ran through at walmart????
-
The card might have started to go through, then the system 'caught up' and realized there wasn't enough money. The Walmart registers can't have a single button that reports a stolen card or everyone would be reporting stolen cards every week by accident. Plus, stolen cards are generally reported by either the card holder(not a store) or by the system reporting a certain number of failed attempts to use a card(usually 3 in a row).
At any rate, you're dead set on blaming Walmart for everything, including following the law regarding taking possibly stolen checks. You can sue anyone for anything, but you're not likely to win a lawsuit when you're trying to require a business to not only break thier own policy but also break the law in taking checks from someone other than the owner.
Sorry that you're in a tight spot over the holiday, but the store is doing what they are supposed to do to protect potential customers. The gas stations do put a hold on a credit/debiit card when you pump gas, and sometimes it can take days for that 'held' money to be released. Sometimes it's mere minutes. It depends on what system they use at that particular gas station. Some stations are renowned for holding money for up to 3 days.

Re: I need to rant....
It sucks yes.. but they did the legal thing. I however you my fiancée card all the time And never have had a hard time. They pick and choice. The worst part is NEITHER of our cards are signed... I will tell you a story that wal-mart IA guilty of.
About 4 months ago we traveled into wal-mart, did our shopping And when we went to leave withdrew from the ATM 120. Well we got distracted and left it.. well we called the bank wal-mart everything.. even went back and forwith with a woman who refused to let us talk to a manager. Well we filed a police report... needless to say the woman who we originally talked to stole it.. and split it with her manager to prevent being fired..after threatening to Sue and basically being told to.. "insert bad words here" we left. We did find out from this event 3 people were fired but the woman who committed the crime got away... why? Because she's bad words.. :p it's sad to say, but wal-mart is dirty.. my case isn't as some but it will still 120 of my dollars that were stolen...
I'll take your side And say that wal-mart give you a hard time, but I will also agree they took the legal action... as hard as that is to believe.
To this, the only tine I've seen a card asked for ID while I was in Chicago. My roommates mom spent almost $4,000 at target ABS the first words the cashier said was "ID"
I am sorry that this happened to You...

Walmart actually does have this option to so does lowes or was it menards?? either way they do have the option to we are not blaming them for following their policy we are blaming them for reporting our card stolen there is more than enough money on the card to pay for the toy so no that cant be a possibilty we will wait till tuesday to find out exactly who reported it we will have a print out and then I will let everyone know we also have an aunt who works registers and I have an uncle who works at walmart we have been trying to get a hold of her to learn some walmart secrets she hasnt answered for the past hour

This is the reason why i pay cash for everything. plastic or checks just dont fly with me.Too many problems with people stealing ur info etc.
