Your a cool kid jason but most kids your age are not responsible enough in my opinion to care for these animals + have parents that except them. I feel you will more likely find 12 and under keepers who were raised with herps and maybe a few in your age range. Most kids your age and older are too busy being teens which is good to find time to care for herps. But it would be nice to see your generation become more invloved and passionate in herps but that usually comes from exposure which most o us know that locally herp owners are few and far between. Most peopl are raised with the wrong idea of herps and think of them as gross or the whole they don't love you back thing people always say. But jason you are our ray of hope for the you and sharing your love of snakeds and other herps. Hope I'm wrong, I really do. You can be young and have a teenage life and care for animals but again at that age parents play a big role in owning anything bsides a cat or dog. That's why I got my first at 25. But your awesome so share your love with your generation and show them how wonderful these animals are!

Yea right now it's not. Wait until you have kids, a wife, a girlfriend, a pending divorce and a full time job babysitting those who refuse to obey the law! :D

I'm 14 and take care of 3 leopard geckos, 2 mice and a ball python completely. I also do most of the pet related chores for the furry ones. They (herps) are much easier to care for than cats or dogs: no peeing or pooping on the floor, you don't have to feed them as often, less bites or scratches.
I wasn't raised with herps, but I've always liked animals. I started liking reptiles when I went on a field trip to a camp which had a snake guy in 5th grade and got to hold a burmese python. Anyway, It's nice seeing others around my age on here. :)

as of now i dont plan on having kids, im mainly asexual, so no problems, my snakes are my babies, getting a breeder pair soon, anyway, heres a pic of me now, http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/...es/IMG0064.jpg

and one of me a few weeks ago with my corn snake

    http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/...snakes/001.jpg excuse my man boob.

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/...akes/058-1.jpg i was astonished by how quick he was being, usually he is slow, and lazy, not tht day xD, im completely in charge of the snakes tht i have, i feed them, i water them, i do about everything with them, so i know tht u arent saying im irresponsible vexer, but i do take great care of my animals, my cat is mainly my moms now anyway, the dogs just walk around the yard and what not, still get food and water everyday!

I had my first snake to myself that I bought myself at 13 I admit I realize I could have done better lol only after years and years do I realize that but I started doing my research when I got my first ball and my dad at the time even tried butting in and helping me take care of it but we got into huge fights about how to care for them he always thought he was right.....guess who didnt butt in after being shown ball-pythons.net lmao anyways through my teen years I had so many different reptiles ummm estimated around 60? with only 2 deaths which were my fault........as long as the kid does research, supervision and the funds then go for it

16, always raised w/ great respect for animals. When I moved to Florida I got into reptiles, and it helped a great deal that Ben Siegel Reptiles is right down the street from me. Most of my animals are either directly or indirectly from him. I now have a breeding pair of corn snakes and 8 ball pythons, and I am starting a BP breeding program this year.

I know quite a few adults don't take care of their herps very well either, not sure it's always age related

Kudos to the young ones, good thread. I know I wish I was able to start my collection when I was 12, 13 or 14. I had to wait until I was 21 to get my first herp :gj:

I just turned 31 but have been a "keeper" since I was 5. Crazy to think I haven't gone a day in over 25 years without a snake in my care, no matter what the circumstances were. It's a lifelong thing that never goes away...if you're lucky. :)

Obviously there are bad keepers of all ages. Bu this topic was just about the teenage years. Most teens have problems just feeding or walking their dogs. Not all ofcourse but the main factor as I said was parental approval and they can b quite costly to take care of and teens don't make a lot of money if any is all. I also said that I hoped I was wrong and that I wish more of their generation would become more involved in herps. So I wouldn't have said that if I felt all teens were not mature enough to care for their animals. I just know how many people in my generation are fearful of herps and I wish it was different. I also commended jason for his care of his animals. So I will respond to lgray because I respect your opinion bu as far as jessica goes I wount even waste my time to respond. Nothing I said was rude, just straight forward and the truth. Most teens are too busy in school and after school activities to properly take the time needed to care for herps. Most are more involed in the opposite sex and things of that nature like just growing up and finding themselves. So you can take what I said which ever way you choose. But in no means was it disrepectful or rude. Just my opinion and I'm entitled to it as are every one of you. Happy holidays.

I didn't call you rude??? I said your comment was highly unnecessary.
However since you brought it up, I think it is a bit disrespectful to categorize all teens together here, as there are many on this forum that are responsible keepers, and there are plenty of adults that are worse than teenagers, that have a lot on their plate as well, in fact .. I don't know about you, but a lot of adults have much more on their plates than a teenager.
The normal teenager you are describing also wouldn't be taking their time out to come to this forum.

And what statistic did you find that most teens have problems feeding and walking their dogs? What are you talking about? What about the adults that get a dog and then post it on craigslist 3 months later because "it's too much to take care of"? Most teens I know have no problem taking care of their pets ..........

Why are you even wasting your time addressing this? This thread had no ill purpose. You are "having your opinion" to sour a thread, and had nothing to do with your opinion on young keepers.

It is a known fact that with age comes maturity and responsibility. The fact that I'm even responding to you hurts my soul deeply. I do not feel that teensw can not care for herps by any means. If you would take the time to read my posts and not scan through them you would see that it realy has nothing to do ith the age group at all. Love for animals of al categories can come from any age and backround. And I never generalized my opinion to all teens. And I cleary stated that regardless of how many adult keepers are bad and neglectful that this post was directed towards teens and not adults. Maybe you should learn to read instead of critisize. I wish more youth would care for herps then I believe that do. Because their interest is out of pure love and admiration rather than just the fact that they own them. Myh point is tha I hope the younger generation can show the true love and passion for these animals and ther gentle nature. To say that I wish jason will spread his love for herps to his generation to give future humanity a better understanding of these remarkable creatures is rediculous. And for the record saying "most teens" does not show or imply judgement on all teens. Teens are the best keepers in my opinion if the time is available because they re not sidetracked by the complications of adulthood. But require paretal support to care for animals properly which is the x factor. I have no ill will against teen and their ability. Its the x factors and roadv blocks that could come into play. Also I never said I'm talking about kids on this forum because if they are here then they have made all the effort neccesary to care for their animals. Lgray is a very knowledgeble woman and I have already addressed that there are bad adult keepers but tis thread was directed toward 12-18 year old young adults. So don't act like I think that teens are bad keepers because I don't. I fel that a tenen who cares teuley for animals are more able to care properly do to less responsiblitly and obligations. But parental supp9ort could be a major handicap. I want the younger generation to love all animals heeps and mammals alike so in the future dogs will not be the hierarchy of mans best friend but all living creatures. So read before ylou critisize and make me repeat myself. Our youth is our future in every aspect of life. So tell me again how I was wrong again by saying that most childeren are not responsible enough to care fully for animal. Without supportive parents it is practically impossible. So next time you wanna bring some disrespect to the table do so with some intellectual sense. Do to your extensive experience. I was going to get an infractio. In my next sentence but I told judy I wouldn't and you need to gain some sence.

I still have no idea why you even posted this though ... You're replying and it's hurting your soul? Wow, since I'm apparently an enemy of yours for pointing out that you stated something that was completely unnecessary.

I know how to read, and I read everything you wrote, and I know who you were criticizing. If you took the time to read what I wrote, you would stop putting words in my mouth and realize that I think it was completely unnecessary for you to say anything at all.

Your original post in this thread was unrelated to the OP's topic and that was the only point I made. So I don't know why you are carrying on, and I don't know why you are threatening my intellect .... Maybe you should calm down, double check your spelling, and reread what I wrote.

I'm not going to waste my time replying anymore, since my first post to you was the only point I wanted to make - and the only point I continue to repeat. That there was no reason for you to point out that most teen keepers are bad, when all jasonx wanted to do was make a fun thread .... Not really sure why you even posted anything if you couldn't just say something positive.

Telling me that I need to "gain some sense" makes NO sense. You are basically saying that you contributed to this thread by posting that most teens can't take good care of animals, that most teens don't have time to feed or walk a dog, etc. Did you not read the title of the thread? I also don't see the point of telling me that you were going to get an infraction ... Are you trying to look cool? I don't really get it.

    Back on topic, please.

Actually I do most of the care for ALL of the animals. I feed them, give them water, bathe them( or bathe WITH them), clean cages, walk them(except when I'm at school, then my dad does), give them medicine, play with them, ect. When we first got Neko, he had an eye problem that required eye gel and liquid medicine twice a day, and I did that for a whole month.
Nice pets Melody, they all look very healthy :gj:
I think a college would allow bps if you didn't tell them about them. I live in an apartment, and they don't know about any of our herps. It's not like trying to hide a dog, and if anyone comes over, just throw a blanket over the cage/rack.

I have a 3 1/2 year old who's has a snake. Obviously I do need to help with the care but he does the most of it. He helps me change thebulbs in the morning and at night. And he reminds me to change em. He tells me when they need more water. And he loves to hold them. He knows not to be loud or jump around them. I think by time he's 12 he'll be able to care for them 100% by himself. I think a kids ability to take care of any animal (even herps) has a lot to do with how early their parents put responsibility on them. Also how much parents support them. To the younger ones with herps that are well taken care of, healthy, and thriving. More power to ya =D :P

The schools that I'm applying to don't allow pets, but it doesn't hurt to ask directly. The worst they can say is no. That's why I have a backup plan. :gj:

I'm 18, nearly 19, and I have 5 snakes so far. I've owned a lot of pets throughout my life and so I've learned since I was young they're a responsibility and you have to take care of them.

My friend goes to Uconn and he told me if an RA comes into your room bc they think you have something youre not supposed to (like drugs or alcohol) they cant look at anything that under a blanket. For example certain size microwaves are banned but he just keeps a towel over it so the RA cant see it. They also arent allowed to open anything, so if you have a rack with opaque bins then theyll never know. You have to make sure your roomate is ok with it too though lol.

Happy holidays.

after school activities are not my thing, i cant wait to go home and see the critters in my house, my cay running around like crazy, my dogs outside barking, and my snakes usually asleep. xD
