One of my Tricks
Not many know about this that i do, but some do. Figured i would share it to thoses that would like to try it.
I dont cool my snakes, they stay 80-82 room temp and 88-91 hot sides all year long 24/7.
But The picture shows what i do every other day. Once i separate the males form females, i change the water with ice cold water and add in Ice Cubes. This will give them a cold bowl to wrap for few hours. Works like a Charm :gj::gj:

Nice. It is funny all of the tricks that "we" do to breed our Ball Pythons. We actually don't do anything for ours. Our temps stay pretty constant year round and we do not cool. I am sure there is some natural cooling that happens, but we do not change our temps. So far we have had 100% breeding to laying success. Meaning that every female that has locked has gone to produce good clutches.
Its really cool seeing all of the diverse ways that we breed or maintain our animals.

I know females are given to cold-seeking behavior and bowl wrapping during the first half of the breeding season, but I'm curious to know whether you do this as a method of encouraging locks early on, or whether it's intended as more of a way to keep the females on track?
-
Thanks, might have to try this next season.

I do this more with females who will breed. I start pairing in October each year. And this is when i do the cold water with ice cubes. It can help push follicle development.
The mojo in picture had her first lock sept 2nd. and now already had 8 or 9 golf ball sized follicles. Went off food month ago and is close to ovulation. Everytime i change the water on the females with cold water and ice, within a hour i notice them laying by it, or wrapping it.
Its the next best thing to not cooling the snakes. Thus keeping their temps normal and they have a area to cool off themselves when wanted to induce breeding and follicle development.

Re: One of my Tricks
Rich,
Have you/could you temp gun the bowl and the female when you see one bowl wrapping. Im curious as to how cool the bowl gets and how cool the female can lower her temps.
Very creative and I have to admit to not ever seeing this technique before. I like hearing about how keepers have different practices that very from the traditional "cookie cutter" ways.

The bowl temp is 54F and lasts that cold for about 30mins. The mojo pictured above her water is now at 75F and her body temp has dropped to 75F now.
So it does seem to drop their body temps about 5-10F depending how close and tightly wrapping it.

Yeah I give my breeding Blood girls COLD water with water changes
They seem to enjoy it as well

Hmmmm.....this is definitely a trick I would like to try. Thanks for sharing! :)

No problems, Glad i could share it. Ill have to do more tonight as i separate males

Very cool! Still growing my future breeders up but it helps to collect tips and tricks like this before getting into breeding
-
Thanks for sharing Rich, I will have to try it since my pastel has been looking to cool down lately.

Glad it will come in handy for you...

Just tried it and within minutes one of my females was around the bowl, cool trick! Thanks for sharing.

cool, perhaps i will try! if you're using ceramic bowls, you could also stick the whole bowl in the freezer (kinda like a frosty glass when you order a beer in a restaurant) and then fill with cold water & ice cubes

This i thought of but the frozen bowl with frost could be problematic.
With just cold water and ice, the bowl slowly gets to temp which slowly drops the females body temps.

So if I do that, and the female coils around it, that means she's ready for the breeding season? Or not always it means she will breed? I read that bowl wraping is a good sign, but does it actually tell me something about the female or not at all?
-
Re: One of my Tricks
Dont mean they are ready to breed, I only do this for females i Know are breeding.
It will help get the females in mood faster
-
My female I am breeding right now is rarely on the cool side, mostly coiled inside the hide on the warm side. Does this mean anything? I have moved my male 3 times now, and I will continue until I see an ovulation.
Ps. Should I remove the hide?
-
Very cool idea Rich!!!!
I love the brainstorming here:gj::gj::gj:
Funny thing is, I have had the debate with a couple of my fellow breeders around here to cool or not to cool. I am the "new" first year breeder that knows nothing but was not planning on cooling at all. This is a neat idea that I might try.
-
It works out very well for females needing a boost.
As for the hides, Take them out when pairing or one will hide away.
Some females not fully ready will still be heat seeking. More you pair the more she will bowl wrap

Re: One of my Tricks
Just Updating How well the Trick works.
Same female in first post, is on verge of ovulating any day. She had her first lock sept 2nd and now has 9 massive follicles.

I'll try this for my female is not in the mood to mate ..
This is my first time I will breed so why not try this ..
Is not much to do as everyone else and the temp is lowered ..
My male is with her now but to remove him later when nothing happens ..
When you place the male to female?
How long are you doing this with water?
Before you enter the male?
-
This is done after males are separated from pairings. Then i give cold water as females tend to bowl wrap more after a pairing
-
-
How often OR just after paring??
-
Daily when female is not paired up once a day
