I want another snake....
Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a second snake in February or march and I wanted to get your guys opinions on what types of snakes you recommend. As of right now the larger snakes (boas, burms, retics) are out of the picture. Other than that I'm open to almost anything. I LOVE my BP and I am definitely open to getting another, I just want to see what my options are. My price range for just the snake is 100-200. Let me know what you guys think.

You can get corn snake morphs relatively cheap and they font get that large. Sand boas stay small. Hognose are small.
-
I've recently fallen in love with the Hog Island Boa. It's a dwarf boa that gets about as long as as a BP. They're really cool and I love the two that I have.
Another cool snake is the rainbow boa, also a smaller boa, and it looks really cool. I plan on getting one of these soon.
Kenyan Sand Boas are cool and stay really small, I have an adult male is about 18 inches.
You could also get another BP, can't go wrong there. :P
Out of all of those options, I think the Hog Island Boa would be the one I recommend the most. They are just an amazing boa and they don't get big. :)

Thanks! I was looking at Kenyan Sand Boas and I thought they were kinda neat. My question would be, can you handle them much or do you typically have to leave them alone? I was also looking at Hogg Islands and I saw one at a show that I went to recently that was massive... How big do they get on average? I typically like snakes that are bigger like the Hog Island but Kenyan sand boas are pretty neat as well. Also, are Hogs pretty docile? Being able to handle the snake is a pretty big requirement for me. Lastly, if you were gonna spend 200 on another BP what morph would you get?

I don't handle my Kenyan as much as I should. I got him as an adult and it seems to be 50/50 if he's okay with being held. Most are okay with being held though. When mine is okay with being held, he's really cool. They feel different from any other snake I've held. They have a slightly rough feel to them. They do like to burrow so getting them out can be a bit of a challenge some days because you don't always know where they are.
As for the Hog Islands, males are smaller and average about 4ft, females get a little bigger at about 5-6ft and get little more girthy. My Hog Island Boas are super docile and I believe most of them are. Mine are both babies still and under 100g. They have amazing temperaments and cool colors, just make sure you buy a pure Hog Island Boa if you decide to go that route. Some people will cross them with red tails and those will get bigger.
As for the BP, it depends on if you ever plan to breed and if you want a male or a female. I honestly love a really nice pastel and you could get an amazing male for under 200 and a nice female for around that. Spiders and cinnies are also other morphs I really like. Bees are one of my favorite combos, but you won't find a nice one for 200. It really depends on what you like though. :)

Im kind of interested in the Kenyan Sand Boa. I watched a bunch of videos on them and they got me interested. I have always liked bloods as well but I've heard they can be quite temperamental... is there any truth to this or is it just a myth?

Yeah, I assume so. I have always really liked them, but I don't want a big (girthy) snake that I can't handle because its angry. I really have a thing for RTB's but I just can't have one right now. :( I am really leaning towards a KSB but I can't seem to find a good care sheet on them. I want to do a lot of research on them before I go and buy one.

Re: I want another snake....
Maybe check out Rough-Scaled Sand Boas (Eryx Conicus). I wouldn't mind getting one of those myself...

Re: I want another snake....
Not all boas get large. Some stay about the same size all ball pythons.

What are you planning on housing this new snake in?

The Island Boas are dwarf boas (http://www.riobravoreptiles.com/boas_island.htm), I believe there are a couple of other species of dwarf boas as well, such as the Mexican Dwarf Boa. There are also rainbow boas, rosy boas and sand boas. Those are all the come mind right away for me.

Well i have only really done research on the KSB's so if I got one of those it would be in a 10 or 20 gallon tank depending on gender. If I got a larger boa I would probably keep it in a Sterillite bin, but I would obviously do research on it for size requirements first.

Re: I want another snake....
I would say any rosy boa or a carpet python.
-
Sand boas. I always suggest sand boas.

No problem. There are many dwarf boas out there. Males generally stay smaller than females in boas. All of the boas from Central America and Mexico are dwarf boas. Some of these include boas from Cancun, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Crawl Cay, Caulkers Cay, Sabogae "Pearl Islands", Panama, Corn Island, Hog Island, El Salvador, and Sonora, among others.
I hope this helps.

That was perfect! Thank you very much.

Ok, so new update. My girlfriend wants to get me another snake as a gift (which is why I have been looking) She really likes the brightly colored ones, so when I showed her the KSB she thought it was ugly. She really likes rainbow boas, GTP's, and carpet pythons. What are your guys thoughts?

A GTP would be more of a display animal, they don't tolerate handling as well as the other 2. Having had both carpets and rainbows I would think that you would enjoy a carpet more. Rainbows can be temperamental and require high humidity. And some can be picky eaters. Don't get me wrong, I love my rainbows but I think as a pet you cant beat a carpet. They are beautiful, most are docile, and they have something about them that almost makes them seem more intelligent then other snakes. Maybe others that have carpets can chime in but they just seem more inquisitive then most snakes. Both can and usually are nippy as babies but most calm down as adults. I don't think you will regret a carpet but that's just my opinion.

although i am partial to ball pythons i have a couple KSB's too. I also keep a baby cal king that is much more active out of his tub and is VERY food aggressive. he is a nice change to seemingly lazy snakes lol. crappy pics but this is my adult albino KSB. i only got him recently and he tagged my g/f once already. then again she was cleaning rat tubs that night soooo. otherwise they are really docile. the babies are REALLY small. like the size of an earth worm. they grow slowly but can be very tame. My girlfriend used to have an adult male she raised up and he was the most docile snake Ive seen. They aren't super active as they burrow under their substrate 99% of the time. they do not require much. they are very hearty and can make great pets. You can find an albino or a snow baby in your price range. just keep in mind a baby will be on day old pinky mice for what seems like forever lol. an adult male will be slightly smaller than a female. The albinos sure are great to look at. I haven't found a mate for this male yet but i hope to soon!

I looked at jungle carpets and rainbow boas. I am leaning more towards a carpet now. I REALLY like the Jungles. Does anyone know about how much they cost?

You can usually find standard Carpet Pythons starting around $200. The Jaguar, Tiger, and Granite morphs can run up into the thousands. Just like Ball Pythons, it will depend on the quality of the color/pattern, bloodline, and breeder. When considering a Carpet Python, there are three main types that you are most likely to come across:
1) West Papuan, or Irian Jaya. (Morelia Spilota Variegata) Average 4-6 feet.
2) Jungle. (Morelia Spilota Cheynei) Average 6-8 feet.
3) Coastal. (Morelia Spilota McDowelli) Average 8-10 feet.
These are fairly slim bodied snakes. They are alot more active and curious than Ball Pythons. They are also semi-arboreal, so they love to climb on branches, perches, or shelves that you provide.

Re: I want another snake....
I bet you could find a young jungle carpet for around $100, maybe less.
-
Plan to spend closer to $200 and do your research because there are ALOT of carpet python mutts (crosses between IJs, jungles, and coastals) out there as an outcome of trying to make jags
-
I would try a Brazillian Rainbow Boa! I love their coloring, patterns, and the fact that their scales act like prisms to reflect light! They will get 5-7 feet long but stay skinny so its very easy to handle one by yourself.
