BP got bit by rat ....need help
I fed my juvenile bp a small rat a bit ago (only eats live). It coiled around the rat in such a way that the mouth of the rat was under the snakes upper neck. The teeth from the rat went into the snake and I couldn't get it off. Now my bp seems fine but its got a bite mark and it seems to wheeze through the hole of the bite? What should I do?

    Ouch, good luck with that.

Im a new bp owner and never fed live before so I cant really help ya. The wheezing doesnt sound good tho, might be in order for a trip to the vet?

    Sharing pictures would help.

They told you to take it to the vet. That's what I would do as well. Keep the area clean. Until you get get a visit I would make sure it is on only paper towels if your snake is on bedding. You don't want anything getting into the wound and infecting it.

    Good luck.

If its just a bite, just keep it as clean as you can, and your snake will be fine.

If he really is breathing through his neck .. all you can do is take it to a vet...

Its hard to tell without a picture though of how bad it really is.

No need to have an attitude like that. You asked for a response and you got one. Best advice is just to take that snake to a vet if it is wheezing like that. That doesn't sound good at all.

Experiences like this are a good reason to feed prekilled items to your snakes. My retic is just now getting to rats, and the first one I fed her was pk, purely because I dont want an experience like this. Just for your snakes safety, prekill + zombie dance and your snake will most likely take it. Best of luck, hope your BP has a good recovery.

Snakes are very hardy creatures. i am sure they can take a bite. if it left a mark then it will surely get off the next shed.

for safety, try dabbing with betadine to ensure proper and infection free healing.

if it punctured the lower jaw meaning there is hole. then go to a vet ASAP!

    Vet Trip...............GREAT Idea:gj:

Seems like someone is trying to help you:rolleyes:

On a side note, We baby out snakes way more than they get if they are on their own in the wild. Yes, a good rat bite can kill a BP but I am also sure they have been feeding and getting bit for hundreds of years:cool:
Sometimes I think we just need to relax and let them do their thing

26 rats a week and no major bites and with live everyone eats or food gets put back in the rack so there is no waste.
Not going to turn this into the live/ f/t debate.;)

    OP............how is you snake looking??

    x2
Now to the OP. Like stated above if there is air leaking out of the hole when your snake breathes then get it to a vet. Depending on where the bite is ( pic would be nice) the rat could have bitten into the trachea, however if it just got the underside of the mouth ( think about it like having an injury to you cheek, yes you would need stitches but you won't lose enough air out of it to hurt you ) just keep it clean.
