Amazing find on craigslist
So I was looking for a normal female on craigslist that I would be able to get to breed this year and came across an ad that saidd "three ball pythons for sale call 555-5555 (not the real number) ask for andy" So I called the guy and asked him if he had any normal adult females, guessing I'd be lucky if he had one. He said ya I have a pastel adult female, I was instantly surprised that he had one. So I asked well how much do you want for her, thinking he was going to say around $250. He replied $50, I thought the phone had cut out or something thinking this was surely a mistake, but he told me again he only wanted $50 for her. So I drove to meet him and 2 hours later this is what I came home with :)

She is skinny only 884 grams and only eats live. But I'm hoping I will be able to get some weight on her and switch her to f/t and maybe I'll be able to get her to go this year. That is extremely unlikely but well see she has the length just not the weight. Gotta love people on craigslist, I feel bad she is so skinny.
-
Gratz! Nice find! I never see anything like that here. Well not for $50.
-
She's pretty! Why can't I find deals like that here? lol
-
Thanks guys now I just need to get her on f/t and her up to weight. She's not the prettiest pastel but i'm happy I got her
-
Grats on such a good deal! :gj:
-
hahaha theres some guy selling a pastel male for $80. i just texted him lol. grats

Re: Amazing find on craigslist
NOt going to lie this encouraged me to get on craigslist and look around lol
-
Ya there will be people on there from time to time that have no clue what they have or what it is worth lol. I see normal females on there all the time for around $50 if you don't mind feeding live

Then again, they may know exactly what they have.
Hate to be a downer, but
1) how do you know it's a female?
2) an adult female at only 800 odd grams? Either he was maintenance feeding her or she's a picky eater...no fun there...
3) I hope you have "her" in QT...being a Craigslist pickup...chances are "she" was kept in a tank with the other two he was trying to unload...
and to Gabe...did you see a pic of the 80 dollar Pastel male? I'd gladly pay 80 bucks for the right one...Pastels are incredibly common...great looking Pastels aren't...
So many people in this hobby are obsessed with saving a buck...

Re: Amazing find on craigslist
Nice looking animal and only $50! What a steal!
-
Good find. Hope "she" works out and everything works out. Did the guys seem to have a good setup or any idea of what he was talking about. I found an adult male spider for 200 on Craigslist from a nice girl but the money situation didn't allow it. Good luck

This is the add

ROAD TRIP!

Well I'm waiting for a probe kit to make sure she is a female. However the snake is pretty long almost 4 feet. now while males do get that long it is more common for females to be this long. additionally he said he hadn't been feeding her very well as he couldn't afford to, which is why she is so skinny. And when i first got her I checked out the area from her vent to the end of the tail and it was shorter which is another indicator of a female. When I went to pick her up your thoughts did cross me mind but I put these together and I lean to believing the guy.
I also have a pin and pastel that I picked up at an expo and have never sexed and while I bought them as females they could be males. I also bought a female boa on kingsnake thats suppose to be 100%aney 66% kahl albino and she could be none of those thing. I also bought a het pied pair on craigslist that I still haven't sexed, they could both be males or both be females, or not even be het pieds.
I guess what I'm trying to say is you can't really trust anyone, you always hear of popular "big breeders" mis-sexing snakes, and some times even worse you receive a snake with mites or an RI. So I try not to be a downer, and yes all these thoughts cross my mind, but I think I'd rather get screwed over by a dude on craigslist then a "notable" person on fauna classifieds, kingsnake, or at an expo, just my opinion.

Ya he had 4 other red tails boas that were 4-6 feet he was trying to sell and an adult ghost female and adult normal male. The guy had just run up on rough times and couldn't keep taking care of his whole collection.

A reputable breeder is about 100 times LESS likely to screw you over than some clown on Craigslist...

Re: Amazing find on craigslist
nice! it seem like i find all my amazing deals on craigslist... or the show :)

Good find :)! Much betterthan the two adult "green tree pythons" I went to pick up.... that turned out to be yearling normal balls.
"I specified green tree python with you 3 times on the phone..."
"I thought they were the same thing" she says.
I at least sexed them for her and explained they are not GTPs, green pythons, or anything other than normal ball pythons....

Agree

Update..... I just made a custom probe (don't worry I made sure it would not harm the snake in anyway) I probed her and it only went in about a 1/4'' before bottoming out. So she is a female :)

I agree. $80 for a male is pretty much average nowadays. But if you can find a quality one for that grab it.
-
Another quick update when I asked the guy if he'd tried to feed her f/t he said ya and there was no way she'd take it. I just offered her a f/t small rat and after a minute or two of hesitation she took it!!!! So stoked :)
-
Have you probed a ball python before? If not I'd try to pop it to make sure. Hopefully you are right, but it seems very unlikely that it is a female.

I don't know how to pop I've watch youtube videos but have never been able to get the hemipenis to come out on my males. My vet here showed me how to probe as that is the way he does it, and I sexed all my older snakes this way today with them coming back as the sex they are suppose to be. I also tried to probe her on both sides of her vent just to make sure and they were equally shallow. She is a female trust me lol
-
Yeah, I'm picking up a pastel male today that comes with a 70 gallon aquarium, top, lights (which I don't use for BP's), cave, dish, and an oak stand for 100 bucks! Gotta love craigslist!
-
Awesome find! I always keep my eye on craigslist. Nice job!

Learning to pop snakes before buying from strangers IMO is a must especially if you want to breed, that is unless you want to end up with a stable full of males :P
I recall not knowing how to pop, I read everything I could to learn how, but nothing replaces practice practice practice.
Practice on normals and practice till you get comfortable doing it and you'll feel much better about buying snakes from CL
Ralph Davis's video shows it's fairly easy to roll a tail up like a tube of toothpaste :)

Hopefully your correct on the sex with your improvised poking devise :P

I will I'm just worried about hurting the snake. I've watch ralph's video a few times but still am not able to do. I think I'm going to grab my girl friends normal and practice now though lol thanks for the advise.
-
I just got done watching his video again and trying on my girlfriends normal male. I wasn't able to get the hemipenis to come out but he did have sperm plugs come out so I guess thats a start lol. How many times should I try on him before putting him back, I don't want to hurt him and his area was starting to look red so I put him back. Any suggestions?
-
I just tried on all my other snakes, and I got sperm plugs to come out of my male het pied but no hemipenis. I got my first hemipenis ever out of my spider male but no sperm plugs. does this mean he won't be able to breed this year?
-
Maybe he just lost a sperm plug and is making another :P
How old is he and what does he weigh?
When your practicing on a male just try a few times and let him be, you will get the hang of it just be patient and don't over do it on one poor male, lol.

Thats what I thought lol, I only tried on my breeders 2 or 3 times before leaving them alone. The male spider is a 2010, hatched in august 2010. I weighed him 9/13 and he was 817 grams and his last meal before the weigh in was on 9/6. He gets feed once a week about every 6 or 7 days, he has never missed a meal, even in shed he'll eat. So I was really hoping he'd be able to go this year but he didn't have any plugs, so should he not go this year?
Also when I opened his tub today it smelled funky like a musky nasty smell but there wasn't any pop or pee in his tub, is this normal?

They are easy to find and not all look as good as others. But you can have the worst looking one and it make the best babies. We had that happen to us. I can show parents to prove what they can make. Plus it's a good thing I am certified to ship to save people on gas.
