When The People You Live With Set The A/C TOO LOW!!
I am really getting tired of my older sister setting the A/C to 74F-75F... I sent her a text asking her to please stop setting the A/C below 78F or my reptiles will get sick and vet bills are expensive. I honestly don't think I'm gonna get through to her.. Some people just really don't understand that they need to keep in mind that there are other animals in their house that need certain requirements:colbert:.
Does anyone else live with anybody, whether it be family or friends, that set the A/C too damn low??
It is honestly an EXTREME pet peeve of mine.
-
Darn, I would bring that up with mom as she pays the bills.
-
Hey just a thought. Can you close the vent in the reptile room and keep the door closed?

Oh Mom knows LOL. She wants her to stop doing it too.
Although that sounds like a fantastic idea, I unfortunately live in a place where it very hot in the house if no A/C is running through. My reptile room, being the hottest room in the house, would be extremely warm due to the mid Summer temps.
-
yuo can restrict the air flow some that will allow th room to be warmer than rest of the house.
-
-
or you can just punch her in the face. LOL
jkjkjkjk

What is this A/C you speak of? ;) Gotta love WA... We have had 78 minutes of weather above 80 this year :)

I had the same problem before I moved to Vegas. I used a space heater that had a built in thermostat (was actually fairly cheap). I simply set the space heater to 80 degrees, it would turn on if the room dropped under 80 and also had a built in fan that would kick in if the room ever rose above 80. :) It definitely saved my reptiles' lives. I'm not home right now so I can't give you the actual model and name of the heater, but if that'd be something you're interested in I could let you know what kind it is once I'm back home.

My sigoth keeps the air at 75 constantly, I close all the vents to the snake room, I leave one slot partially open, the room stays 80-81*.
"Oh Mom knows LOL. She wants her to stop doing it too"
When I was a kid, if we dared touch the a/c thermostat......well let's just say after my brother did it once, the rest of us never dared to lol.

Re: When The People You Live With Set The A/C TOO LOW!!
I live in an apartment and it gets HOT in Atlanta. I keep my apartment in the mid 70's. I've never had a problem with my collection getting sick. They have proper warm spots.
-
Sounds like my place. Temps can change soo quick here sometimes its irritating. Vent is just hardly cracked, but even the insulation in the critter room sucks:mad:

Ummmm???? Mom needs to put her foot down. Bet if she went without a cell phone for a month or two she would straighten up;) If the was in my house she would be sitting sideways if I had to tell her more than once.:gj:

Yeah, bet he was either walking with a limp or sitting funny:rofl::rofl:

I'd have to agree with Kymberli a secondary heat source to kick in if the temp get too low. As wasteful as it sounds I went a a different way but same result I have secondary heat on all my enclosures with a secondary t-stat running it. It kicks in at 80 so if temps dip too low on it comes. It is much more expensive on the front end to set up my way but more cost effective on the power bill (in my case anyway) Also I have enclosures all over my place. :P

Yep my house goes down to 74 at night...They get cold they go to warm spot..
-
I use folded quilts as additional insulation on my rack and on my isolation cages. My hot spot temps are good and the cool end doesn't get too cold. My guys spend most nights on the cool ends even with my AC set at 75. The rack and cage temps stay perfect.
If you would use something to insulate your racks/cages they might hold sufficient heat even with AC. Or, if you have floor vents, you can get magnetized rubber strips to wholly/partially block the vents. I share a room with the snakes and our room is the hottest room in the house. I end up partially blocking the vents at night in the winter or we'd roast.

My apartment in Midtown is 80 during the day and 76 at night. I've yet to have a problem as well.

this may sound kinda dumb, but why does it matter? my a/c is set anywhere from 72-75, but my enclosure is fine. Ambient temps are in the low 80s, i have a lamp that i use to bring up the temps on the cool side if they fall below, and my warm side is always between 89 and 92. Am i missing something? Should I not be putting the a/c so low? I always thought it was fine because my enclosure temps were ok, but is there more to it?
-
As long as my enclosure temps are OK, I don't worry about it. I figure the snakes only care about what is going on in their tubs and ta heck with the rest of the world.
-
I'm with Simple Man, never heard of using this A/C business  74 is super warm for around here :rolleye2:
I can see how it'd get irritating though, maybe cover your A/C vent halfway with paper or something to slow the cooling? I used to do the same but for heating, my step-mother LOVED the house at crazy warm temperatures
-
A/C is running strong at my place around 73-76 and haven't had any problems with my temps. My display tank can't get a little cool, but nothing a infrared bulb on a dimmer can't fix.
We just went through a heat wave here with temperatures reaching 118 with the humidity index so A/C has been a must!
-
larger heat lamp, but the A/C is doing more harm to your animals then cooling the room down, A/C is designed to reduce humidity levels, A/C can drop the humidity down to 20-30%, if you can maintain the temps in the viv, also check the humidity is still in the 50's

I keep my apartment at 75. Currently the reptile room fluctuates between 75-80 depending on how hot it is outside, but when we move into our new apartment (with better a/c) the entire apartment will be at a constant 75, including the reptile room. As long as your enclosures are warm enough, ambient room temperature doesn't matter AS much. I've had the place go down to 70 without a problem.
-
72-74 isn't really a problem.. It gets down to 64-68ish in the winter here (in our apartment) before we crack out the space heater. I bump hotspots a few degrees (from 92in the summer to 96 in the winter to help compensate). Ive been doing that for a few years and have yet to have an issue. My animals do slow down in the winter, but they all have appropriate heat in their tubs. The ambient temp in the tubs is 70.
-
Wow, you guys like it warm!:P I usually keep our house anywhere between 67 and 69 pretty much year round. I keep the vents in the snake room closed so it stays noticeably warmer then the rest off the house. Ambient in my enclosure stays in the mid 80s using a che. Warm side and cool side stay in the low 90s and low 80s with humidity usually hanging in the low to mid 50s with misting of sphagnum moss every other day or so. This is using a 40 gallon breeder with 3/4 of the top covered.

I bet they do slow down if the ambient temp is 70 in their enclosure! Aren't you worried about your snakes getting an URI with temps that low?!

I can't be the only one amazed the op wants to live in a home that's kept at 78 degrees :O That's way too hot to be comfortable for me, and I've lived in south florida for over 10 years.
The easier solution, and coincidentally the one that keeps everyone satisfied, is to get a heating setup that allows the house to be at 74 degrees and still keep your snakes warm. I keep my AC blasting to try and keep the house around 74 degrees, but my aquarium still stays 92-95 on the hot side, low 80s on the cool side.

my thoughts exactly. my a/c was off the other day and the house got to 78 degrees and i was SO uncomfortable. i like it at 72, my bf likes it at 75. as long as my enclosure temps are ok, i dont see a problem turning my a/c down. i monitor the enclosure regularly to make sure hot and cool side temps are good, as well as ambient and humidity.

I too am wondering how yall can stand those temps in your house too. We're originally from Alaska, so we like it cold. People around here think I'm crazy because I have yet to wear anything but shorts except at work, even in winter. After reading this I set out a digital thermometer in our bedroom while I browsed BP and its 63.7 with 81% humidity with the fan on high. I'm comfortable at the moment.
We have a separate room for our reptiles. All the vents closed off and a space heater to keep it at a constant temp. I can't stand to be in there very long. More than a few minutes and I start pouring sweat.

My indoor temps in winter dip below 65 at times.
With the right setups, your animals should be just fine. Frankly I don't like temps above 75, overheating is a much bigger problem than being too cool. The rhacs and panther cham don't like it if we let the indoor summer temps get too high.

Are you referring to yourself or your BPs with the above statement? Just want to clarify.

Re: When The People You Live With Set The A/C TOO LOW!!
The parents put the AC to 68F Because they need it to be very cold in the house.
I am not paying the bills. but all my snakes are in tubs and i made a rack for them, the rack is black and it is my the window which is close but the sun in Florida is intense so the area they stay in is around 80-82. Right now it is 84F due to the Ac not being on since they are not home.
EDIT: Oh you guys are funny, our AC broke a while ago and for 3 months we were living in a no AC home. i have a small personal fan that kinda helps but temps are 80 and up in the house. I just took my clothes off and misted my dog. Windows closed and i was okay enough to do things like clean.I used to live in Vegas NV and Fontana CA. I grew up in the heat
