Female laying egg/egg's right now!! Question?
how do you know if a female ball python is egg bound? my female is laying or trying to lay as im typing this. and its my first clutch.i saved her from a pet shop because they were going to freez her because she wouldnt eat and was limp and week. so i bought her for $40 and started the process of bringing her back.started a series of baytro shots 3 to be exact.and tube feeding her with baby food mixed with calcium, and pedialite.then i tried to feed her mice, asf, rats and she would only show intrest in mice but was to weak to eat the adults so gave her hoppers and she started to eat.now shes laying eggs.idk what, how she even mated with.plz help...

Hi,
How many has she laid so far and what makes you think she could be eggbound?

she just started and its seems like the egg wont come out.shes been moving her body as if shes trying to push the egg out but its just popping out alittle bit.shouldnt it pop out with a ease or does it take awile for a egg to be pushed out?

Re: Female laying egg/egg's right now!! Question?
Hi,
It can take a little while to get started but how long has she been at it?
And pics might indeed be a good idea.

pulled the plastic bowl out and put a heavy glass one in so she doesnt spill it and she can use it to help.

Honestly, it sounds like you havent had her for a while, and it sounds like she was in terrible shape. As soon as she ovulated and had become gravid I would have taken her to the vet and had them aspirate the eggs. That is a massive amount of stress for a female that isnt up to par. Her health is 100% number 1. The condition she was/is still in puts her at even bigger risk.
Its important she has good humidity, and privacy. If she is laying them right now she may be ok. But she should lay them relativly in a short span of time. She shouldnt lay one or two and then not lay any more. She should lay them all in one session. She should be coiled up on the hotspot with her tail in the middle of her coil. I would worry if she lays one or a couple and then no more and you can see she still has more to lay. Or if she is visibly straining, or writhing.
From the sounds of the condition she was in I wouldnt have let her get this far. If she hasnt laid soon I would call the vet and get her in immediatly.
Edit- saw the pic.... do you know for sure she is gravid? I had a female rescue that had a massive urate stuck like that. She was extreamly dehydrated and was immesly constipated. An egg should come out easily....but that doesnt mean for her it will.

Re: Female laying egg/egg's right now!! Question?
Hi,
Yeah I have to agree aspirating them is probably the best way forward if she can't get them out.
I would try and get the cage really humid at the moment - it probably won't help but I don't think it could hurt either.
With the meds and the body condition you described eggs are the last things she needs to be producing and may not make it anyway.
I don't think there is anything I'd recommend you do before talking to a vet.
If you aspirate the one at her vent and she passes that there is no garuantee she could pass the second any easier.
I wish I knew more so that I could help you. :(

when i got her she weighed 3 1/2 pounds when i first seen her months befor she weighed 5lbs so i never seen her gravid or even noticed she was gravid.my main objective was to nurse her back and thats what i did. she had no signs of resp,or any reason to bring to the vet other then her not eating and being limp.they didnt have a heat source in her tank or anything so i figured she was cold and that being why she didnt eat and was limp.the vet would of done the shots just like i did.dont have tons of money for vets visits but do have a friend breeder and his wife is a vet so the snake was looked at and well taken care of and for the record i had her for aBOUT 2 MONTHS NOW.there out of town right now so thats why i turned to you guys.hope that clears up any questions now back to my question.thank you...

she passes stool with no problems, she drinks.eats, and is very alert so she shouldnt be constipated.

I understand...vet visits are expensive. The limpness I would have seen as a reson in of itself. But guesses over the internet are not going to help her now. With egg binding the only thing that can be done is aspirating the contents of the eggs and helping her pass them. The only thing i can say like Dr. Del said make it really humid if she doesnt pass them or what ever it may be she needs to see a vet.

Are you sure it's an egg?
Try to touch it and see if it's hard, if so it's a urate, and you may have to help her pass it.

Just keep an eye out for any more bound ones.
Do you have an incubator set up?

Even if it's not good, hey, that girl did a great job for being in the condition you got her in.
Think what she could do next year for you when she's well fed and has had a year of good hydration.

:colbert2: off to ya!! You handled the situation great! you came, you saw, you conquered :)

couldnt of done it with out your help.those vids helpedi think i watched like 45 second of it and was like duhh ran and got my probs and ky and jumped right in for that egg.thanks again:D:snake:

Yup. When she's 100%, you can throw some nice codom or double codom males in there with her and get some nice babies.
One man's trash is another man's treasure. If a female will produce eggs under horrible conditions I figure that she will do great the next time around. I'd work on getting her over to rats in this next year. With the big dried up egg out of her I wouldn't be surprised if her feeding response doesn't pick up.

she eats with no problem.the problem i had was a adult mouse was to heavy to eat when i first got her but now shes on med size mice and now i know she has eggs and soon all will be out ill try the hopper rats.weird thing is i fed her the day befor and she was ready to shed and boom today she lays a egg.realy didnt even or should i say even knew she was gravid.till today.
-
That big old egg was probably why she was doing so poorly and not eating in the first place. I think that she had ovulated way long ago before he got her and that egg mummified from being in her for many months. Once he started feeding her again that would have been what gave her enough strength to get it out.
-
it looks like there are 3 more eggs in her.maybe 4 wont know till she starts going again.shes also sheding to so i could amagine her discomfort.im going to keep a eye on her.going to be a long night or should i say morning.

Re: Female laying egg/egg's right now!! Question?
This is an interesting thread, I'm glad she got that one to pass:)! Seems like the store owners didn't know jack poop. She also may have gotten preggo from being kept with a male.. I could see that happening since that pet store doesn't seem very knowledgeable.
For now I'd leave her be. Sometimes females don't want to lay until they are completely left alone. I'd take a peak at her tomorrow night to see her progress. You did excellent on getting her to pass that egg! I hope she passes the others with ease.
-
Good luck to you and your girl. Now that she's started moving them down and gotten that big old dried up thing out it might get a little easier for her.
Then you can see how skinny she really is. Just looking at her she doesn't look gravid. She probably went a long time without eating because of that mess of eggs.

I've gone into pet stores and seen a half dozen adult and subadult snakes stuffed into one cage. But when a snake swells up and quits eating....why would they even suspect that it might be gravid...how could that have possibly happened?

Yeah that's completely crazy. I suppose most people not into breeding snakes won't spot out a gravid snake or even know the signs of a gravid snake. This definitely shows to tell that they don't even care about another living organism, just another animal in their store to sell.
-
And then when it seems like it has a problem, their answer is to freeze it??!!?? You'd think that big chain store would have like a retained vet or something, but then they might not make as much money....

when i first seen her there she was 5lbs perfect shape all the way from head to tail.then like a month in a half later i goi in to see if fhe was doing better and the owners son said there going to freez her because she hasnt ate and needed room.so i was like how much can i get her for since your gonna freez her he sasid they sell them for $89 and i said how about $40 since shes a sick snake.sold i got her but by that time she weighed 3 1/2 lbs and now notice eggs.i even try to check for eggs at the time and coudnt find anything.im still new to this breeding and learning everyday.

its not a big chain store its a mom and pop store.i posted in another thred about the overload of mites on there baby snakes and resptory issues they have.tanks and so on how nasty they were.i got on them about the mites and even told them how to clean and take care of them.i was so pissed i even grabed the 10 gal tank with baby mite infested snakes and took it to there back room and started showing them what and how to take care of mites and prevent it again.

Update:::
SHE hasnt passed any eggs since last post when i got the one out. waiting to see if another will breach but its still a good 5-6 inches from her tail.cant find a vet that does reptiles figures.so im in this for the long hual.im her doc now.she still doing good and alert.i soaked her and try to help get the egg to move down but no luck she just clenches up.got all her shed of so she can be alittle comfortable.so ill just have to wait and watch her some more.im sure big breeders go through this type stuff and know the tricks.alot of them probily dont use a vet but have access to meds they need.as do i.so ill just have to learn as i go like i did last night with the bound egg. but im still looking for a vet and asking the other vets if they can point me in the right direction.

Re: Female laying egg/egg's right now!! Question?
Hi,
http://www.herpvetconnection.com/florida.shtml
Be very carefull when trying to do the same as shown in those videos - you could easily break ribs or rupture the snake internally or at the vent.

I think that the thing that might help her the most is to give her a few hours totally alone in a setting that is dark and private. She may relax a little and start working those other eggs down herself. Right now she's got to be majorly stressed.
ETA--oh, good, a vet list!
