Florida - We've got bugs here
A friend of mine is down here from Michigan with her husband. They're staying out on Clearwater beach for a couple of days. She left a glass of water on the bedside table when she went to sleep. Well, she woke up in the dark, reached for the glass to take a swig - and got a big fat cockroach in her mouth! I didn't have the heart to tell her they can also fly - I have a feeling she'll figure that out on her own!

we have palmetto bugs, 8" long centipedes, and what my kids call "clicker beetles" here in the west texas chihuahuan desert. A few nites ago, I went out onto my semi-enclosed porch to smoke, and after about 20 seconds realized there was a "clicker" 3 feet from me, a tarantula about 4 feet from me... that was almost "ok"... until I saw the damned centipede crawl up the wall! "in house smoking ban" was then "violated" while I RAN thru the house with a lit cigarette so I could be in the back yard where at LEAST I wasn't in an enclosed area with one of these creatures!!!! LOL...
On a side note, I have a couple of "trailer trash" friends that like to claim that they don't have cockroaches, but "palmetto bugs" because all their cockroaches are the mondo HUGE variety... lol

Do they still have them black bugs in Florida, they called them "Love Bugs". They would always be locked together no matter what they were doing - landing, flying, on the ground. I haven't been to Florida in a few years but when I drove the 18 wheeler down there I would go thru swarms of them on the interstate. It would turn the front of the truck black and it was a PITA to get them washed off. Not good for the paint work either. I carried a few cans of PAM (no not Provent-a-mite ) to spray the front of the truck so they wouldn't stick.

Oh, yes - they show up in swarms twice a year! The adults only live 3 days, but when you get thousands at a time, it can really do a number on your car's paint. You have to keep washing them off. Here's a vid - I hope it doesn't creep anybody out!
