So I think I need a couple of snake hooks......
Just to open the tubs on feeding day.

I was half way through feeding the BP's and it was Cleo's turn.

I leant down, put my hands under the handles so nothing hung over the lip when it opened.

Turns out Cleo isn't daft and knows how to change direction mid strike.

    http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6357/cleosfe01.jpg

She didn't want to let go either. :tears:

And this was before I even took the rat out of the thawing box to offer it to her. Who says you can't get a good feeding response on F/T.

This is it after the clean up and medicinal whisky. The headline seemed appropriate.

To add insult to injury the remaining two snakes fed after that also seemed to find my wounded paw more attractive than a measely rat. :taz:

So I'm thinking of making or buying two small snake hooks or a pair of gaunlets. :ninja:

do you feed with tongs or hemostats?

i even feed my baby hondos with hemostats. so far all the snakes ive kept have yet to mistake my hands for food. (knock on wood)

that bite looks pretty bad. how big is she?

Ouch, she definitely got you! Haha yeah, my 740g male has an amazing feeding response on F/T. It's actually pretty scary, so I feed him with 12" tongs LOL

Yea I feed from 24" hemostats.

She did that before we got to that stage though - I can't open the tubs with the hemostats the way my rack works.

I normally open the tub then go get the rat and hairdrier the head and offer it on the hemostats.

This lets them know it's feeding time normally - tonight Cleo seems to have got a step ahead of the process.

And she is about the 2.5 kilo mark.

    That's definitely a bite.

How big is Cleo ? I'd love to know so I have a reference point for my own snakes. So far the biggest I've had get me was only around 600 grams. The pair I have sitting at 2900+ worry me a little bit.

    Heh,

Normal bites aren't really that much of a biggie even from a big BP.

It's the feeding bites that hurt a bit more as they hang on like blazes and, if they can, wrap round and use their body to crush the teeth in further.

Bizzarely the snake that worries me most during feeding is the little dinker female ( about 1200g ) as her tub is level with my head and she tends to come out and hang over the edge of the tub. That's a bit too close to my ear when I am heating the rat and I have had to duck a few times.

As she is well strong enough to do real damage to my delicate shell likes if not remove them entirely I tend to utter prayers such as "don't you dare" and "oh no you don't". :(

Thank God I wasn't wearing a kilt - her tub is the second from the bottom.

My sporran could have been in mortal danger! :O

    OOOooo My that bloody mess....
Interesting that both times i got tag... that always was female :rofl::rofl:
If You really need hook.. get good quality collapsible... You can use it for your BP's and extended for herping in the wild... I believe You have common European adder in England... and Aesculapian Snake could be "defensive" as well...

I bought mine from Reptile Basics and I'm pretty happy with it :gj:

I feed with 18" hemostats, and I use a hook to pull open the tubs . . . because I am a pansy.

DANG, she really did tag you good! Usually you see these posts with just the two little bite marks, not a completely red hand, lol. And for her to change directions mid-strike, you should take her to the circus, thats skills!

Ouch! Judging by the bite she must be a good sized girl?

I have a snake hook that I bought just for one of my PH Lavender girls. On several occassions I have had her strike at my face as soon as I opened the tub. She is insane!
