[Release] My Genetics Calculator

Well I hope all the time and work finally paid off. The calculator that can do it all for ball pythons. Even does complexes, which I don't know of another calculator that does.

This is my gift to the community, I would also like to note EVERYTHING on my site is under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. Which means you can use any of the content (pictures, articles, ect.) as long as you abide by the license without having to get my permission.

Special thanks to my brother, the real coding genius for helping me a ton, couple of personal friends and that_dc5 for proof reading my horrible grammar and spelling and the many who tested and help troubleshoot the bugs.

Quick start guide

My goal was to create a genetics calculator that was 100% accurate and easy to use. I also believe this could help newcomers learn how genetics work as far as ball pythons go.

1.Type in the base morphs of your snakes you want to breed. As you type an autosuggest will pop up, allowing to select base genes from the database. If the gene does not exist in the database you can still type it in with no problems. You can also double click on the text box to view a list of all the morphs in our database and select from there.
2.Check heterozygous or homozygous for each gene. In short heterozygous means carrying 1 gene (ex. het Albino, Pastel, Lesser) and homozygous means carrying 2 genes (ex. Albino, Super Pastel, BEL). For more information visit How to use the Calculator.
3.Click breed snakes and see your results. Also at the bottom there are text boxes to share your results or post the results on Ball-Pythons.net.

Wow. This is awesome. I had to learn about genetics and punnet squares the hard way - in biology class. I wish this had been around when I was just getting my foot in the door. Thanks a lot! :gj:

I honestly didn't understand it too much in school, didn't need to learn it til I started getting into snakes, sure woulda made it easier if I paid attention back then lol

lol that's the one I used to use before I made this one, I thought the layout worked great, just needed to be tailored to ball pythons

I love this calculator. :] It's a whoooole lot easier to use than any others I've seen. The table bit at the bottom is awesome too, it's helps me keep track of what I've actually calculated!

Love this! Thank you for all the hard work you put into it. Crazy lots more work I would guess, but it would be cool to have pictures linked to it showing combos etc. :)

I've been throwing around different ideas on how to do this, I want to look into legality of things also, I would like to keep everything on my site in the public realm, but some people might not want their pictures in the public realm, so I got a bit to look into before I do that.

lol they don't like me, wouldn't happen. plus i was thinking something more along the lines of having galleries for each morph, not just a couple pictures, the colors and patterns can vary quite a bit as we all know.

Maybe some people here would open up their photo albums and give you some pics to use? I know I would:D

I'd be perfectly fine adding pictures of my BPs. :] I think that if you asked the people here a lot of them would feel the same about it. It could be a great way to get the galleries going!

Maybe have a rule of white background, or lighter colored plain background to keep the images consistent. It's easy enough to put a snake on a sheet and get some shots of it. It'd keep the galleries clean and similar, even with pictures from lots of different people.

Well I went through a few definitions and read through alot of court cases ( I'm weird and actually find them interesting lol) Well it appears the legality of using picture is pretty generous. Under the fair use law, you can use copyrighted material for various purposes, one of them is teaching. So as far as the law goes, I can go copy all the pictures I want and put them on my site. Would I ever do that, of course not. but saying I cannot use your copy written content... actually I can.

So it basically comes down to moralist stand point of it. Obviously if you give me permission and give me your picture, there no problem.

things like, what if someone owns the animal, and someone else owns the picture, the guy who owns the picture gives me permission, but they guy who owns the animal wants me to take it down, where should I stand?

Someone gives me someone else's picture, that person wants it taken down and also wants to know who gave it to me, where do I stand?

You give me permission, then want it taken down later, where do I stand?

what other scenario might cause problems?

You could set up a little contract to check off before you submit images? Saying that the person has the rights to the image their submitting, and they give up the right to have it taken off the site without.. good cause?

Maybe something of that sort? I don't think the legality of it would be too big of an issue, but on the subject of the owner of the actual animal wanting the image taken down, I believe they have no legal right to say so. The image is not theirs, just the subject involved. I am pretty sure there is a law protecting photographers who take images from people changing their minds later and throwing a fit about said images. (I do photography, but haven't gotten into the nitty gritty of the rules.)

Treat peoples pictures the way you would want any of your property treated.

Somewhere on the image link so people know who's animal they are looking at and the owner feels good about getting credit for their animal as well:confused:

Problem is, im not most people, my pictures, I give to the whole world to use without my permission as long as its not for commercial use and they do not do anything misleading with it. no questions asked. If its in the public domain, it stays in the public domain, most people do not feel this way I have noticed.

I could see certain situations "listed above" id be walking on fine line of public domain vs person's feelings. How does the community feel I should respond to them?
