Morph?
So, this little dude was given to me as a Pastel Red Tail BUT since he is my first little guy and SUCK at identifying any type of morph whether it be geckos or snakes, I have no idea if it's true. In all honestly it doesn't matter because he's beautiful either way BUT i'm curiouse. :D

and my brother-in-laws little Red Tail. She's a lot darker, has a really red tail, and has the prettiest pinks along her side. :)

She's really squiggly so didn't get many good pictures.

Re: Morph?
Also, to add to the question... Do these guys normally darken or lighten up as they grow? I know that when it comes to Corn Snakes they tend to lighten as they grow, same here? Again, sorry for being naive and asking these "new B" questions but yeah... Lol! Pictures are always welcome! Comparisons?

They will lighten and darken as they grow. They go through light and dark phases. Sometimes the change can be minor and sometimes it can be quite dramatic...

Re: Morph?
I do not own any pastel boas, and do not know too much about them. However, from what I have seen on the net, your does share at least one characteristic of a pastel, which is the pink hue down its sides. Pretty boa either way. Yes, the boa will eventually darken. It surprises me sometimes how their colors change so drastically from baby to adult. My adult salmon male looks nothing like when I acquired him at a few months old.
Boas are really tough to take pics of. Once out of their cage, they are all over the place. The last pic is a good one. It shows off his colors nicely.

Re: Morph?
I just realized that I have a pic of my salmon as a baby on my photobucket.

Sorry about the bad pic.

Re: Morph?
Pastel isnt really a morph. You can goto redtailboas.com and look it up.
It was line bred over many years by some people like Jeff Ronne, Clay English to produce lighter color boas.

Theres a writeup of Jeff's "pastel dream"

My little guy was surprisingly calm and just hung out on my shoulders the day he was dropped off but it could have been because it was a new environment.
The second set of pictures is are ones of my brother in laws female while the first set are of my little guy. Castro (my RTB) has VERY little pinks on his body and is a lot lighter than the other including his "red tail". His head and body are almost a white in color, or creamy white.

I tried joining that forum multiple times already and just gave up. I was not able to access any of the threads. Maybe they need time to approve my account but I just got tired of waiting. I'll definitely check it out again though. Thank you!

I did not realize that was two different snakes when I first saw this thread. Honestly, yours to me looks like a normal Colombian boa. Good looking nonetheless. It could be a pastel. I just do not know enough about them to say definitely one way or the other.

Thank you.:) You know, I actually went on LLL Reptiles web page and they have different types of "Red Tails" could mine not even be a Columbian? Here is the link...

I have a 55 gallon tank that I am emptying out SO now i'm going to put Castro into the 55, heavily decorate to provide lots of hiding places, and get another snake for the other tank i'll have left over. I wanted a Rainbow boa and they sell them at a good price at LLL (it's about 40 minutes from me). Anyway, is Castro indeed a Columbian?

He's looking like a Columbian to me :) But I'm fairly new to the boa stuff, so although I'd go with Columbian I can't be sure that I'm right.

Yes, he is definitely Colombian. I am just not sure if he is pastel or not. I'm sure he will be happy in his 55 gallon. Boas are not normally shy like ball pythons, and do well in larger cages. Make sure the lid is very secure, because they get really strong as they age. Be sure to post up some pics of his new cage once you get it all set up.
Rainbow boas are pretty neat looking. However, I have heard they are more of a challenge to care for than boas or ball pythons. I suggest doing a little research on their care before buying one.
Good luck on whatever you decide.

Thank you for all of the information and your help with my questions!:D I have done lots of research on Rainbows and do know they require high humidity and lower temps, good thing is that I haven't gotten the snake so I can still think about it some more or even change my mind. Have any idea what species of snake I can house comfortably in a 40ish gallon tank with sliding screen top (for its whole life)? I also thought Dumerils but those get on the larger side... :( The tank is 3 feet long by 1 and a half wide by 1 and a half feet tall.

Re: Morph?
My uncle had a rainbow boa and it was SO aggressive... He had about a 50 50 shot that he'd get bitten more than once while cleaning its cage, and you could almost guarantee it would tag him once... Idk if all rainbow boa's are that way but its something to keep in mind. :P It seems like they can be really aggressive.
As for your boa.. I'd say nice normal, but I'm pretty sure its not a pastel.

Cool, I got him for free so it's not like I paid for something I "wanted" or "expected", don't know how to explain I mean I wanted a Red Tail and I got one and again, I think he amazing. He's beautiful either way.:D Thank you.
I posted a thread asking about Rainbow Boas and I think it's just like any other snake, some are more aggressive than others. I think your uncle just got one of those on the nippy end.

You're welcome. I'm just glad to help. Sure, there are many dwarf boas out there that would be comfortable in the size you are talking about. I'm a boa guy, so it makes sense that I would suggest a boa. There are also many other species that would be comfortable in a 40 gallon. Check out this site for some info on dwarf boas: http://cuttingedgeherp.com/boaconstrictorimperator/. Let me know if you have any questions.
