pastel het albino

    pastel het albino
    I have a pastel het albino male going to norm het albino females.
    In regards to a punnet square, the females are Na.
    What would the pastel het albino be and how would the male and female fit in a punnet square?

    P= Pastel gene
    A= Albino gene
    Lower case latter = normal gene

    Kind of off topic, but is your pastel het albino brighter than the average pastels out there?

    Not sure what you mean by brighter. He is for sure not lighter, like a baby might look.

    no, i'm not quite sure why he asked that question. Albino is recessive and will not show in the het form

    So in the square you created the female het is on the side as pA and pa.
    Does pa mean normal?


    What would these actually be?

    Punnett squares to me are a really bad way of depicting what going on. but you have to lay them out by possibility of what they can pass on.

    the male is on top and with he genes he can do 1 of 4 things, pass both an albino and pastel gene, pass just pastel, pass just albino, or pass neither, the female only passes an albino gene or doesn't. now you do your matrix then look at your results, single capital letters are heterozygous (aka het) and 2 similar capital letters are homozygous.

    PpAA Pastel Albino
    PpAa Pastel het Albino
    ppAA Albino
    ppAa het Albino
    PpAa Pastel het Albino
    Ppaa Pastel
    ppAa het Albino
    ppaa Normal

    so now you add up duplicates and you get

    1/8 Pastel Albino
    1/4 Pastel het Albino
    1/8 Pastel
    1/8 Albino
    1/4 het Albino
    1/8 Normal

    Also what is confusing is the only book i've used is Kevin McCurley's "The Complete Ball Python" and he seems to use NN and Na for the het albino.
    You use pA and pa, why such a difference?

    The reason I ask is because I produced two spider het albinos last year that ended up being lighter in color than the average spider and a few breeders that I've talked to have noticed the same thing. Was curious if it affected any other morphs.

    I used P for pastel and A for albino, their just variables, I've never read kevins book so I don't know whats in it, but he most likely just used a standard variable and stuck with it so the reader would not get lost. you can use what ever you want, there's no standard for it. I could get into discussion about how each set of letter represents a different locus and alleles and blah blah blah, but ill wait for your head to stop spinning first :P
