Getting Bit or Almost Getting Bit
So I have this new YB that is still a baby about 200g or so maybe 250g but man is he a vicious little dude always trying to bite me and stuff. But here is the thing I have had many snakes strike at me but never never actually bit me and for some reason im scared of getting bit I mean literally my heart starts pounding if it almost gets me. Lol you would think i wouldnt be such a sissy but for some reason when a snake strikes it really gets my nerves going, does this happen to anyone else
O and one time i had my 700g spider bp out and when he was slithering through my hands he actually opened his mouth and tried biting one of my fingers but he never struck or anything has this ever happened before to anyone?

Re: Getting Bit or Almost Getting Bit
I think the human being brain is pre-wired to not want to get bit by a snake. I've been bit by dogs, cats, rats, babies, daughters, etc. and all of those bites hurt a lot more than a snake bite. Why, then, the subconscious reaction to getting bit by a snake? I have no clue. You should let your little YB get you once or twice. Maybe when your brain registers that it's really no big deal, you won't have that reaction?
I Get it, but it's real important to not be scared of these animals if you are going to keep them and care for them. It takes a ton of fun out of owning them. Babies, btw. are typically more nippy than adults. My big ones never strike (except my spider guy when he's in shed, but that's normal) He'll probably grow out of it. Also, once you have them in hand, they don't typically bite. That thing about your male spider is weird. Maybe your finger smelled like a rat? :)
Good luck

Practice makes perfect. It sucks, but that's really the best way, lol.

Conditioning, after so many bites, you become conditioned not to flinch or pull away, at least with balls anyway lol.

Re: Getting Bit or Almost Getting Bit
I've been around snakes for more than 20 years and I still flinch some times. The one's that get me are the snakes that come out of the tub when you open it. without notice, here they come. I'm fine when I'm going into a tub and get tagged.
I've got a female Lesser Platty and she's over 1000 grams now and she's been a biter ever since I got her at 250 grams. She's also a hisser too. No one in the house will hold her except me. You should see her go after me after she's been in the sink soaking for 10 minutes. She's my viper in training.

Once you get bit once, you realize it was kinda stupid to be scared in the first place, you'll know what I mean when it happens, pretty much no pain, a little blood. My first bite was from a gtp in the face and honestly if i didn't feel the blood running down my face, i wouldn't of even thought she got me. 10 minutes later, the blood stopped flowing and you couldn't even tell I got bit unless you were looking for it.

Yea your right i dont think i will ever get used to being bit or the strike, I think its just the fact that i cant tell when they are going to strike i think that is what gets me the most.

I still flinch from time to time, but for the most part its over before you can react so, yea you get to the point when you just check for teeth and move on.. babies are the worst they sit there with their mouth open bobbing up and down it can be cute and then there are day's I really don't want to bleed..I mean really just don't want to bleed..
-
Its because it happens so fast! When snakes strike they strike with force which can be intimidating. But once you get tagged your like "wow that doesn't even hurt" haha

Wanna hear a funny story?
Well I really wanted a yellow anaconda
so I went to a breeder with a 9, almost 10 foot female
I went to go pick her up (she was on the ground) and she struck straight up, about 4 - 5 feet RIGHT UP to my face
she didnt get me, but I got a very good look at the inside of her mouth
I almost had a heart attack right there. Its always scary LOL

Yeah I think my face would be extremely messed up if she had gotten me. Yellow anacondas have huge teeth, and she was huge lol!!!
Lets just say that I had to sit down for awhile :P
-
So what did the breeder say?
"so you still want an anaconda?" LOL

we didnt say anything for a good minute or so, we just looked at each other and then he said how sorry he was and how she never does that kinda thing
Keep in mind this is a private breeder, he runs out of his house (hes in Orillia if I remember correctly)
So it was just me and him, was a really awkward moment lol

Lol glad you enjoyed it :D
And yeah they can strike at pretty much any angle, they can even strike at 180 degrees, its crazy
Yeah I dont think I could own an aggresive, unpredictable, 10 foot plus snake lol. If they were at least predictable I would be able to handle it a bit better

Sorry but that is hilarious how you described it:rofl::rofl:
As for the OP's issue, When you go to pick your BP up, do something that changes the current situation and take him out of "angry/nervous" mode. Mist him with a spray bottle or put a small towel over his head. Swiftly then scoop him up. You said the snake is only around 200 to 250 Grams?? LOL... come on now thats little:P

Put on a winter leather or work glove and let the little devil bite all he wants. You'll get used to getting tagged without the pain/shock and maybe he'll learn that striking won't prevent you from picking him up.
Make a little game out of it. Amazing how much bravery you'll show when you you know the bite won't hurt.
Good Luck!

It gets my heart going every time, I've been tagged a few times.
